Initiated and developed an innovative service leaning project with the University ofAlabama’s Law School through their Community Law Clinic, in which three lawstudents lived in Greensboro, Alabama (Summer 2014) and worked as the in-houselegal counsel for Project Horseshoe Farm to handle all legal issues related to the not-for-profit’s contracts, real estate and construction, state-wide regulations andlegislation and its current operations.

Initiated and developed a partnership with Auburn University’s Honors College topilot an innovative online remote tutoring program that linked ten of AuburnUniversity’s highest achieving students with ten at-risk children in Alabama’s BlackBelt Region (Fall 2014). In Spring 2015, expanded this program to 35 AuburnUniversity Honors College students and piloted a similar ten-student program withthe University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Honors College.

Initiated and developed a partnership with an Auburn University Real EstateDevelopment Professor to commission a supply-and-demand study for the potentialsmall house project (500 SF) for Hale County. The completed study also includeddemographic information from Greene, Sumter, Perry, Marengo, and ChoctawCounties and was presented to Auburn’s School of Architecture’s Chair and 20KHousing Manager who offered consulting/design services for the project which isscheduled for construction in Summer 2015. (ALFA Insurance had begundiscussions to fund entire construction costs of $511,000).

Recruited and hired a local Teach For America corps member (Summer 2013) whotaught in Black Belt public schools for two years as a Youth Programs Director toexpand and strengthen after-school tutoring programs and develop in-schoolenrichment programs. Also recruited and hired a Birmingham Southern andGeorgetown graduate from Washington, D.C. (Winter 2014) for second YouthProgram Director Position.

Initiated and developed partnership and long-term plans with Alabama’s Departmentof Education and the State Superintendent to develop a strategic plan and fundingstrategy to improve, strengthen, and expand the Project Horseshoe Farm’s after-school programs in order to develop a turn-key and replicable after-schooltutoring/mentoring model for rural communities in Alabama’s Black Belt Region.This model would link on-line tutors with local students through internet-based videoconferencing programs, with efforts made possible through partnerships with topuniversities and colleges across the State.

Successfully wrote and was awarded a $600,000 21st Century grant ($200,000/yearfor 3 years) to work in partnership with the Hale County School System tostrengthen Project Horseshoe Farm’s after-school mentoring/tutoring programs andallow its programs to reach students in 1st through 12th grades and to grow thenumber of students in the after-school program from 70 students to 140 students.

Oversaw the management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities andfinancial statements for the organization including: organizational revenue/expenseand balance sheet reports, reports to funding agencies, the development andmonitoring of organizational and contract/grant budgets. Was responsible for allpurchasing and payroll activity for staff and participants and the educational stipendsfor interns.

Developed and maintained systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assetsof the organization. Oversaw the coordination and activities of independent auditorsensuring all relevant compliance issues were met and the preparation of the annualfinancial statements was in accordance with requirements for organization. Advised Project Horseshoe Farm’s Board of Directors on organizational structureand processes, strategic planning, and resource allocation includingstaffing/scheduling, human resources/volunteer issues, insurance issues, building,grounds, and equipment maintenance, use and implementation of technology inoperations, establishing operational processes and process improvement, and insetting and monitoring operational goals.

Worked with legal counsel to ensure that operations and organizational activitieswere in compliance with relevant laws.

Helped facilitate donation of 20,000+/- SF historic hotel located on Main Street inGreensboro, Alabama. Handled due-diligence including legal, insurance,construction estimates, and managed the first phase of construction and restorationwhich included rebuilding the foundation, floor joists and seals, new roof, replacing14 layers of bricks on second and third stories and rebuilding all windows with a$500,000 construction budget.

Worked with local architects, contractors, and four Auburn University InteriorDesign School students to design an innovative, 500 square foot, ADA accessiblesmall house that could be built for $25,000 and used in an innovative supported-housing model designed to care for low-income elderly adults who have no familysupport, people with mental illness, and elderly adults with physical disabilities.

Worked with a local catfish farmer to donate 10 acres for small house project siteand developed site plan with architect. Designed an on-site community supportcenter, housing for service-learning students, and system of walking trails that linkedthe buildings in the community to future residents. Worked with ALFAInsurance/Alabama’s Farer Federation leaders to develop and present a total projectbudget of $511,000 and began discussions to fund project entire project.

Hired as a consultant by Hale County Hospital and Netty Spain Hospital Trust toreach out to contacts including state-wide healthcare leaders, local and staterepresentatives and elected officials, private foundations, and individual supporters.

Set up an onsite tour of Hale County Hospital and Greensboro Community withhigh-level healthcare CEO and a Robert Wood Johnson and Kettering Foundationboard member to discuss vision for rural community healthcare.

Developed a business plan to present to Hale County Hospital Board of Directorswith the goal of presenting a strategic map for the Hale County Hospital to create aniche as a rural teaching hospital, to partner with large statewide institutions anmedical schools, to develop an innovative education training site focused on ruralhealthcare education, and to prepare for upcoming challenges facing ruralcommunity hospitals.

Initiated and successfully developed potential partnerships for Hale County Hospitaland Greensboro community through statewide efforts that involved civic, political,business, philanthropic and healthcare system leaders to strengthen a vulnerablecommunity hospital.
