Using YourPhone With a HearingAid DeviceA numberof Sprint phones have been tested forhearing aiddevice compatibility. When some wireless phones are used withcertain hearing devices (including hearing aids and cochlearimplants), users may detect a noise which can interfere with theeffectiveness of the hearing device. Some hearing devices are more immune than others to thisinterference noise, and phones also vary in the amount ofinterference noise they may generate. ANSI standard C63.19was developed to provide a standardized means of measuringboth wireless phone and hearing devices to determine usabilityrating categories forboth.Ratings have been developed formobile phones to assisthearing device users find phones that may be compatible withtheir hearing device. Not all phones have been rated forcompatibility with hearing devices. Phones that have been ratedhave a label located on the box. YourLX400 has an M4 and aT4 rating.

Note Never transport orstore flammable gas, flammableliquids, orexplosives in the compartment of yourvehicle that contains yourphone oraccessories.

These ratings are not guarantees. Results will vary dependingon the user’s hearing device and individual type and degree ofhearing loss. If a hearing device is particularly vulnerable tointerference noise; even a phone with a higher rating may stillcause unacceptable noise levels in the hearing device. Tryingout the phone with yourhearing device is the best way toevaluate it for yourpersonal needs.M-Ratings: Phones rated M3 orM4 meet FCC requirements forhearing aid compatibility and are likely to generate lessinterference to hearing devices than unrated phones. (M4 is thebetter/higherof the two ratings.)T-Ratings: Phones rated T3 orT4 meet FCC requirements andare likely to be more usable with a hearing device’s telecoil (“TSwitch”or “Telephone Switch”) than unrated phones. (T4 is thebetter/higherof the two ratings. Note that not all hearing deviceshave telecoils in them.)Hearing aid devices may also be measured for immunity tointerference noise from wireless phones and should haveratings similar to phones. Ask yourhearing healthcareprofessional for the rating of yourhearing aid. Add the rating ofyourhearing aid and yourphone to determine probableusability:

v Any combined rating equal to orgreater than six offers excellent use.

v Any combined rating equal to five is considered normal use.

v Any combined rating equal to four is considered usable.

Thus, if you pair an M3 hearing aid with an M3 phone, you willhave a combined rating of six for “excellent use.”This issynonymous forT ratings.Sprint further suggests you experiment with multiple phones(even those not labeled M3/T3 orM4/T4) while in the store tofind the one that works best with yourhearing aid device. Shouldyou experience interference or find the quality of serviceunsatisfactory afterpurchasing yourphone, promptly return it tothe store within 30 days of purchase. With the Sprint 30-dayRisk-Free Guarantee, you may return the phone within 30 daysof purchase fora full refund. More information about hearing aidcompatibility may be found at: www.fcc.gov, www.fda.gov, andwww.accesswireless.org.

Getting the Best Hearing DeviceExperience With YourPhoneTo furtherminimize interference:

v Set the phone’s Display and Keypad backlight settings toensure the minimum time interval:

1. Press > Settings > Display > Main Screen >Backlight, orMenu > Settings > Display > KeypadLight.

2. Select the minimum time interval setting and press .

v Move the phone around to find the point with leastinterference.

Caring forthe BatteryProtecting YourBatteryThe guidelines listed below help you get the most out of yourbattery’s performance.

v Recently there have been some public reports of wirelessphone batteries overheating, catching fire orexploding. Itappears that many, if not all, of these reports involvecounterfeit or inexpensive, aftermarket-brand batteries withunknown orquestionable manufacturing standards. Sprint isnot aware of similarproblems with Sprint phones resultingfrom the properuse of batteries and accessories approved bySprint or the manufacturerof yourphone. Use only Sprint-approved ormanufacturer-approved batteries andaccessories found at Sprint Stores or through yourphone’smanufacturer, or call 1-866-343-1114 to order. They’re alsoavailable at www.sprint.com Ñ click Accessories. Buyingthe right batteries and accessories is the best way to ensurethey’re genuine and safe.

v In order to avoid damage, charge the battery only intemperatures that range from 32° F to 113° F (0° C to 45° C).

v Don’t use the battery charger in direct sunlight or in highhumidity areas, such as the bathroom.

v Neverdispose of the battery by incineration.

v Keep the metal contacts on top of the battery clean.

v Don’t attempt to disassemble or short-circuit the battery.

v The battery may need recharging if it has not been used foralong period of time.

v It’s best to replace the battery when it no longerprovidesacceptable performance. It can be recharged hundreds oftimes before it needs replacing.

v Don’t store the battery in high temperature areas for longperiods of time. It’s best to follow these storage rules:

Less than one month:-4° F to 140° F (-20° C to 60° C)

More than one month:-4° F to 113° F (-20° C to 45° C)

Disposalof Lithium Ion (Li-Ion)BatteriesDo not handle a damaged or leaking Li-Ion battery as you canbe burned.

For safe disposal options of yourLi-Ion batteries, contact yournearest Sprint authorized service center.

Section 4A: Important Safety Information 155

Radio Frequency (RF)EnergyUnderstanding How YourPhone OperatesYourphone is basically a radio transmitter and receiver. When it’sturned on, it receives and transmits radio frequency (RF) signals. When you use yourphone, the system handling yourcallcontrols the power level. This powercan range from 0.006 watt to0.2watt in digital mode.

Knowing Radio Frequency SafetyThe design of yourphone complies with updated NCRPstandards described below.

In 1991–92, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)joined in updating ANSI’s 1982standard for safety levels withrespect to human exposure to RFsignals. More than 120scientists, engineers and physicians from universities, government health agencies and industries developed thisupdated standard after reviewing the available body of research. In 1993, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)adopted this updated standard in a regulation. In August 1996,the FCC adopted hybrid standard consisting of the existingANSI/IEEE standard and the guidelines published by theNational Council of Radiation Protection and Measurements(NCRP).

Body-Worn OperationTo maintain compliance with FCC RFexposure guidelines, if youweara handset on yourbody, use the Sprint supplied or

approved carrying case, holsterorotherbody-worn accessory. Ifyou do not use a body-worn accessory, ensure the antenna is atleast 7/16 inch (1.5 centimeters) from yourbody whentransmitting. Use of non-Sprint-approved accessories mayviolate FCC RFexposure guidelines.

Formore information about RFexposure, visit the FCC Web siteat www.fcc.gov.

Specific Absorption Rates (SAR)forWirelessPhonesThe SAR is a value that corresponds to the relative amount of RFenergy absorbed in the head of a userof a wireless handset.

The SAR value of a phone is the result of an extensive testing, measuring and calculation process. It does not represent howmuch RF the phone emits. All phone models are tested at theirhighest value in strict laboratory settings. But when in operation, the SAR of a phone can be substantially less than the levelreported to the FCC. This is because of a variety of factorsincluding its proximity to a base station antenna, phone designand other factors. What is important to remember is that eachphone meets strict federal guidelines. Variations in SARs do notrepresent a variation in safety.

All phones must meet the federal standard, which incorporatesa substantial margin of safety. As stated above, variations in SARvalues between different model phones do not mean variations Im
