“You know, Kathy Griffin can do anything to me or say anything about me, because you know, she’s kind of this - she’s a 50-year-old adult bully is really what she is.”Sarah Palin
“Seven days a week I go to bed wearing makeup. That is not good for your skin, but I’m blessed with good genes.”Lady Gaga
“It really makes me question what I have become to my father. Like, what do I even mean to him?”Rihanna
“You can’t trust a girl who doesn’t eat junk food. If a girl doesn’t eat junk food, she’ll probably sleep with your boyfriend.”Olivia Munn
“Meryl Streep makes herself very accessible right away, almost too accessible. That’s what I do. And it totally works. My thing about meeting people - men, women, people in general - is to desensi-tize them, kind of shock them a little bit, to make myself accessible.”Amanda Seyfried
“They pegged me as the bad guy. They pulled me in one time and said, ‘If you don’t stop corrupting the girls we’re going to fire you’. I didn’t touch the girls by the way.”Ryan Gosling

“I’d love to play a big fat person.”Robert Pattinson
Reading Difficulties SOLVED! “GUARANTEED”*Parents, only 1 in 5 fourth and eighth graders tested last year are proficient readers. (National test scores at www.nationsreportcard.com) Meaning they can’t read well enough to master academics at their grade level. Studies show Poor reading skills are the # 1 cause of poor grades, frustration, and a dislike for school. What’s worse? Children believe it is their fault, as do many parents. It is NOT! Don’t believe it! Since 1986 tens of thousands of parents found the Solution for their children. They found ABC Phonetic Reading School® to be:
• Accountable: “Guaranteed”* minimum full grade level of reading improve-ment (on average 1 to 3) in as little as 24 hours or we continue teaching for free until achieved.
• Affordable: For a limited time, as little as $25.00 per hour*
• Accessible: In Home, Library, Community Clubs, or ABC Phonetic Centers.

Last Week of Show! Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Presents:
RAMSEY LEWIS TRIO
Friday, April 1st at 8pmKnown as “the great performer,” pianist, composer and radio personality Ramsey Lewis is one of the jazz world’s most popular and endearing artists. He has recorded more than 80 albums and has received five gold records. For their Scottsdale engagement, Lewis and his trio will perform music from his classic 1960s pop CD, The In Crowd, as well as originals from his new recording, Songs from the Heart: Ramsey Plays Ramsey. The latter is Ramsey’s first as a composer, and the 12 original tunes were composed primarily as a score for the Joffrey Ballet. Lewis infuses his pop-laced jazz with gospel, blues and classical music.
“It’s his improvising that’s striking,” wrote The Guardian. “In the way he hides a groove in a long, snaking line that gradually intensifies the pulse, in the delicate control of dynamics, and in a breadth of jazz resources and sureness of touch.” Lewis will perform with bassist Larry Gray and drummer Leon Joyce. For tickets call 480-994-ARTS (2787), ext. 2 or visit www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org for more information.

GREY GARDENS Tempe Little Theatre at The Tempe Center for the ArtsThere’s a fascinating and funny musical worth seeing from the Tempe Little Theatre Company titled “Grey Gardens” at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Directed by Phil-lip Fazio, this musical story follows the eccentric and bizarre lives of the rich and famous Bovier Beale clan (Aunts and Cousin to Jacqueline Kennedy). From their original status of socially polished aristocrats to their reclusive and dysfunctional demise as mother and daughter cat lovers - these Beale’s are a hoot! Broken up into two acts to reveal the change in the East Hampton mansion and familial dynamics - these two ladies, daughter Little Edie (Katrin Murdock Act I/Brandi Bigley Act II) and her momma Big Edie (Kate Likness Act I/Shari Watts Act II) are truly American icons with a dynamic bi-polar switch worth the change up. These fours actresses move and twist through a comedic slide into oblivion for “The Girl Who Has Ev-erything”. You’ll “Choose to be Happy” with this show and enjoy Tyler Pounds as George, Doug Durant as the” Major” and Josh Kontak as Joseph Kennedy. There’s enough fun and surprises at this house to keep you laughing all night. Thru April 2nd Tickets 480-350-2822 or tempe.gov/TCA.
LOST IN YONKERS Arizona Broadway Theatre at The Herberger CenterNeil Simon came back to life again this weekend in spectacular color as Lost In Yonkers opened at Arizona Theatre Company in the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix. Featuring Tony-Award winning actress and native Phoenician Judy Kaye as Grandma Kurnitz, this Simon masterpiece was alive with wit and wisdom. Judy’s presence was enough to scar away even the alley cats on Van Buren Street. But the real meat and potatoes of this American story wrapped around WWII are the kids in the family. Led by the talented Ryan DeLuca as Jay - and the young rising star of Maxx Carlisle King as Arty, his younger brother - these two stole the show all night! Between teenage angst and fearful duty, Yonkers was made for these cohorts! Add in a touching and heartbreaking performance from Kate Goehring as Bella, and an intense portrayal by Preston Maybank as Louie, and you have the perfect Simon storm ready for full view. Through April 10th. Tickets 602-256-6899 or ArizonaThe-atre.org
MY NAME IS ASHER LEV Arizona Jewish Theatre Company at John Paul TheatreThere’s another strong and challenging production worth seeing which opened this weekend at Arizona Jewish Theatre. My Name Is Asher Lev, is adapted form the novel by Chaim Potok, is the story of a young Jewish artist who is a prodigy. Asher is caught in a double-bind between honoring his own truth and art - and trying to honor the traditions of his family. Michael Kary gives a deeply felt performance as Asher, and is challenged and balanced by his mother, played by Andrea Dovner, and his father, played by Ben Tyler. There’s more subtext and back story to this produc-tion to keep the candles burning late. The questions of God, the Crucifixion, the beauty of a woman, and much more splice their way through a colorful two hour drama that reveals more than it hides. Shalom. Thru April 3rd tickets 602-264-0402
OTHER GREAT EVENTS…..Last call for the delightful Arizona RENAISANCE FAIR which runs through April 3rd. Tickets 800-773-0715. Two Performances by Local Youth Jazz Aficionados
YOUNG SOUNDS OF ARIZONA
Jazz saxophone legend Lee Konitz fronts the Valley’s own Young Sounds of Arizona, including the exciting premiere of a new piece commissioned for Young Sounds, featuring Lee Konitz and arranged by Ohad Talmor.
Called “the first and oldest program of its kind in the United States,” Young Sounds of Arizona was founded in 1971 to provide further training, performing opportunities, and artistic growth for young Valley musicians ages fourteen to nineteen.
Sponsored by the Professional Musicians of Arizona, Local 586 of the American Federation of Musicians, Young Sounds members are chosen by audition of middle school– and high school–aged students each year. Beginning as one jazz band, Young Sounds has matured into two big bands and a jazz combo. Performances at schools, clinics,
concert venues, conventions, jazz festivals, and recording sessions help increase musical competence and performance skills of Young Sounds members. Membership in Young Sounds often precedes a continuance of academic music education at the college level and/or a professional musical career. The program can provide a bridge between playing music on a sometimes basis and making music a full-time job. In addition to musical training and performing, Young Sounds members gain the advantage of mentoring from the professional musicians who lead them and from other members of Professional Musicians of Arizona,

Director Duncan Jones ‘Talks shooting Source Code’
Interview by Stan Robinson
With ‘The Outer Limits’ and ‘The Twilight Zone’ themed style of the ‘surreal’, and what I call ‘mind-bending sci-fi films’ to include ‘Inception’ and ‘The Adjust-ment Bureau’, ‘Source Code’ takes us on another psychological thrill ride!
Director Duncan Jones, who brought us one of my recent favorites the excellent sci-fi thriller ‘Moon’ (2009), says it couldn’t get any better that fate and ‘Source Code’ found him. I asked Duncan did he find ‘Source Code’ or did it find him! Duncan: “It found me! I was actually doing the promotion for ‘Moon’ and was travelling around, stopped in Los Angeles to meet a couple of the people I’d like to work with in the future. One of the people was Jake Gyllenhaal, I’m a huge fan of his, and he’s a very talented young man. I was talking
to him about things that maybe we could work on in the future, and he was the one who said I’ve got this script that I got sent, and he gave me ‘Source Code’ to read so that’s how I got it!”
Stan: So you bypassed the whole stage of getting actors attached! Duncan: “Yea and it was fast! I was still promoting ‘Moon’, and after I read the script I told Jake what I thought, I was on the phones talking with producers, and they were saying ‘Listen, you need to stop the ‘Moon’ press and come up to Montreal, we’re in pre-produc-tion!’ It was fast, (with a chuckle), it was really fast and I had to slow them down a bit, finish the ‘Moon’ press, and then we’ll get started!”
Visit ScreenScene.org for more of my chat with director Duncan Jones. Rated PG-13 – Runtime-93 minutes.
Disney’s ‘Tangled’ Now on Blu-Ray and DVD
Interview by Randy Montgomery
Disney’s Tangled is a charming and highly entertaining animated action-adventure, romantic-comedy and an updated telling of the fairytale, Rapunzel. Directors Byron Howard and Nathan Greno are no strang-ers to the Disney animation department.
Both have worked as animators and writers for such films as Mulan, Brother Bear, Chicken Little, and Meet the Robinsons. Howard directed Bolt with the assistance of Greno in other departments, but Tangled marks the feature-length directorial debut for Greno and the first project they’ve worked on together as directors.
“I was drawing storyboards for over a decade before I started directing,” says Greno. “I still get to storyboard... so I’m happy. In the past I would pitch my storyboards and ideas and sometimes they would change by the time they hit the big screen. I didn’t always understand why. Now I can follow ideas through start to fin-ish. They still change... but at least I now understand why!”Howard explains how animation has changed over the years, “When I first started at Disney animation, CG animation was really just a tiny blip on the radar. Lion King had just come out to huge success, and Disney had a long slate of traditionally animated films in production. I actually remember seeing some of the first scenes from Toy Story and I was like ‘Wow. This is going to change things from now on.’ Now CG is the expected route for animated films.”
There have been alot of rumors that Tangled would be the last of the Disney Princess films for a while. Greno squashes that rumor. “If we wanted to do a Princess movie as our next project, John Lasseter (head of Walt Disney Animation Studios) would be ok with that. There is a lot in development at Disney Animation... I wouldn’t rule out the idea.”
Does that automatically mean a Tangled sequel? “We’d only do a sequel if there was a great story to tell,” says Greno. “The movie buttons up really nicely... but we do love those characters... we’ll have to wait and see.” Now available on Blu-ray and DVD and is packed with extras.

taking care of him. (PG – 95 minutes)
Joseph: “‘Hop’ is easily the best, and if this critic’s memory serves him right, only major motion picture that joyfully celebrates the magical mythology of the Easter Bunny. It is a colorful, creative and comical feature film that is sure to delight children and rejuvenate the imagination of adults.” Grade: C
Stan: “The ‘pleasant surprise’ factor is always rewarding which is ‘Hop’. The appeal to younger viewers with a fresh look at the Easter Bunny, and the view of parenthood expectations of their children, provides a nice family break”. Grade: C
‘I Am’
Hollywood director Tom Shadyac has a near death experience from a head injury, which turns his world upside down. As he recovers, the insight and world perspec-tive he gains provides an intriguing look at what are the things that really matter in life. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR – 76 minutes)
Stan: “By passing the usual documentary style that often includes ‘preaching to the choir’ overtones, ‘I Am’ director Tom Shadyac shares his ‘epiphany’ revelations in a straight forward view with conversa-tions by intellectual and spiritual leaders as the logical conclusions become self evident, which lingers for quite awhile after watching it”. Visit ScreenScene.org for the interview with director Tom Shadyac. Grade: B
‘I Am Nancy’
Actress Heather Langenkamp (Nancy in “A Nightmare on Elm Street”) attempts to overcome the shadow of Freddy Krueger. Screening 7:10 p.m. Saturday, April 2 dur-ing the International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival at Harkins Scottsdale 101. Langenkamp will be present for a signing and post screening Q-and-A. (NR – 74 minutes)
Joseph: “The documentary is awkwardly divided into two distinct parts. The first of which is particularly playful, promptly fol-lowed by a far more serious segment with an inspirational bent. Fortunately, both halves are equally entertaining, making this a must-see for any Freddy – or Nancy – fan.” Grade: C
Randy: “A fun little film and Langenkamp is fun to watch. I would have hoped for a little bit more back story and a follow-up on what she is doing now.” Grade: B-
‘Insidious’
Parents (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) must protect their comatose son from ma-levolent forces. From the makers of “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity.” (PG-13 – 101 minutes)
Joseph: “Now this is how you make a scary movie. Screenwriter Leigh Whannel and Director James Wan secure maximum fright via a very eerie vibe and scores of spooky sights while frequently using humor to break the terrifying tension. ‘Insidious’ is guaranteed to instigate numerous nightmares.” Grade: B
Stan: “With an effective use of sights and sounds, along with good pacing and the right amount of lighter moments, ‘Insidi-ous’ will make one think twice about when we by chance catch a ‘glimpse’ of that shadow we think we see out of the corner of our eye.” Grade: B
‘The Music Never Stopped’
A man (J.K. Simmons) tries to bond with his son (Lou Taylor Pucci) through music after said son develops a brain tumor that prevents him from forming new memories. Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (PG – 105 minutes)
Joseph: “Though an entertaining experi-ence that encourages you to consider your own musically-triggered memories, direc-tor Jim Kohlberg’s film misses many of the emotional notes that empower inspira-tional dramas such as this. Still, Simmons and Pucci’s performances alone make this worth seeing.” Grade: C
‘Of Gods and Men’
Under threat by fundamental terrorists, a group of Trappist monks trust in their faith to carry them through during the Algerian Civil War. French with English subtitles. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (PG-13 – 122 minutes)
Joseph: “Writer/director Xavier Beauvois began with a fascinating-yet-depressing story but, unfortunately, his meticulous approach, which includes several long
scenes in which the monks chant, causes the end-product to be just a little too tran-quil (if you know what I mean).” Grade: D
‘Source Code’
A soldier (Jake Gyllenhaal) takes part in a secret government program that enables him to assume someone’s identity and re-peatedly relive the last few minutes of that person’s life. (PG-13 – 93 minutes)
Joseph: “Visual effects aside, ‘Source Code’ puts ‘Inception’ to shame, spinning a far more articulate psychological yarn while turning the exhilaration up a notch. Director Duncan Jones takes screenwriter Ben Ripley’s ‘Twilight Zone-ish’ story and turns it into a stirring science-fiction fairy tale.” Grade: A
Stan: “With ‘The Outer Limits’ and ‘The Twilight Zone’ themed style of the ‘surreal’, and what I call ‘mind-bending sci-fi films’ to include ‘Inception’ and ‘The Adjust-ment Bureau’, ‘Source Code’ takes us on another psychological thrill ride!” Grade: A-
‘Win Win’
A struggling attorney (Paul Giamatti) be-comes an elderly client’s guardian so that he can collect the man’s monthly stipend but stumbling across a star athlete (Alex Shaffer) along the way. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 106 minutes)
Joseph: “Fortunately, writer/direc-tor Thomas McCarthy downplays this dramatic comedy’s sports components and focuses more on its elements of humanity. There is tender truth in this story and espe-cially in its characters, who are realistically flawed, helping us to forgive ourselves for our own well-intentioned vices.” Grade: B
Stan: “’Win Win’ delivers an insight-ful view of a person, like most of us, who might find ourselves in a desperate situa-tion with our core humanity traits coming through and ultimately doing the right thing for the greater good. Paul Giamatti in the title role delivers another stellar character portrayal.” Grade: B

IF you could double your money every year for 20 years in a row, just one dollar would turn into more than one million;
$1,048,576.00.
More realistically, if you invested your money at 8% from age 25 to age 65, just
$3,900 per year would turn into more than one million ($1,010,320).
That means it only takes about $325 a month to become a millionaire.
As a child I didn’t understand why my dad put all of his quarters in jars. Then I grew up. Like the contractor with the
lumber for that new extension sitting in his backyard or the Accountant whose
own taxes go on extension I have been the investment advisor who didn’t save her
change.
I am a child of, in my opinion the most deservedly respected generation. The children of the Depression Era had a
much greater appreciation for the value of a buck and the old school work ethic. I was brought up and shown by example
how to be economically, socially and environmentally responsible and yet I quite easily learned the ways of excess. Now after 30 years of living for today,
having experienced my own generations ups and downs, I for the past 5 years
every $ I spent I put the change away. I still give in excess to those who need I just
don’t waste on all of those “I wants”.
I found that each year I came up with just shy of an extra $5000.00 per year. You don’t miss it and it grows like Ivy. Now
aside from this I do strongly recommend that for every $ earned a few pennies be
put aside as well.

for each rating is compiled and then it is converted to either a percentile (RateBeer) or a letter score (Beer Advocate). The formulas used are designed to protect against abuse, but they also produce other interesting results. RateBeer tends to have more extremes, that is, more beers are rated with extremely high scores and more have extremely low scores. Beer Advocate’s system yields more balance between the scoring and A+ scores are extremely rare, while D scores are also rare. Both web sites also allow you to compare the beers against other beers of the same style. Given that many of the raters have a preference for strong beers, there is a disproportionate amount of Imperial Stouts, Belgian Quadrupels and other high alcohol beers represented at the top of the list.
Are any of these great beers available in Arizona? Of course they are. Sixteen of RateBeer’s top Fifty beers have been sold in Arizona in the past twelve months including Alesmith Speedway Stout, Bell’s Expedition Stout, St. Bernardus ABT 12 and Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast. Beer Advocate has their list of the “Top Beers on Planet Earth” and 34 of their top 100 were sold in Arizona last year. This includes Alesmith IPA, Lost Abbey Angel’s Share, Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye, Ballast Point Victory at Sea and Bell’s Two Hearted Ale all make this list. As you
explore on these sites you can break it down by country and style as well.
The other big part of these sites are the forums. Forums serve as an exchange of information between the users of the site and they are broken down by category. There are regional forums, Beer Talk, New Releases, Trading and Industry News forums and all are fairly active. Recent topics in the regional forum for Arizona include groups planning private tasting events, availability of Bell’s Hopslam and the Strong Beer Festival held recently. Discussions about big events are regular and following them is a great way to determine which events are worthwhile to attend and which aren’t; post mortems follow every event and allow people to share their experiences. Sometimes it’s interesting to follow another region just to see what is going on in other parts of the country, or even the world.
Of course not everybody wants to participate in these forums and that’s okay, there is other information on the websites as well. Both sites include regular articles, a calendar of events, reviews of beer bars and restaurants, as well as other beer related items. For example, a quick search of the Arizona market shows us that T’s Liquor and Convenience Mart (Tempe), Magnum’s (Phoenix), Papago (Scottsdale) AJ’s Fine Foods – Via Linda (Scottsdale), Moto (Phoenix) and 1702 (Tucson) all score highly. Since the web sites depend on consumers or retailers to conduct the initial set up, there are still many great places not represented. Soon, we expect to see
Mellow Mushroom (Phoenix and Tmep), Bison Witches (Tempe) and Chop and Wok (Scottsdale) show up in these listings.
There are many other sites out there that are beer related. Two of our favorites are The Beer Mapping Project (www.beermapping.com) and Brookston Beer Bulletin (www.brookstonbeerbulletin.com). Beer Mapping provides maps of cities and countries and marks locations of breweries, beer bars, restaurants, beer stores and homebrew shops. If you travel this is a great way to locate the best beer near your hotel. Jay Brooks is a former buyer for BevMo who maintains one of the best blogs out there. Now there are many great beer bloggers but Brookston Beer Bulletin is at the top. There is a small San Francisco bias since that’s where its based, but Jay has a great amount of information and opinion on world wide issues and is always a good read. Additionally he maintains a great reference of brewery web site, other blogs, events, beer trivia and more.
Brewery and distributor websites also provide a lot of good information, albeit only for specific brands. However if you are really looking for in depth information, these are some of the best resources. Some of the best looking and most informative brewery web sites include The Lost Abbey (www.lostabbey.com), Breckenridge (www.breckbrew.

OF CHOICE
The Internet and BeerThe internet is a great tool for many applications. Just about any information you could possibly want can be found right there. Of course, this being a beer column, we are going to look at what is out there for our personal beverage of choice.
First off, how do you use the internet to determine what beer to drink? There are countless beer websites out there that review beers and talk about what’s available. The two most popular are RateBeer (www.
ratebeer.com) and Beer Advocate (www.beeradvocate.com). Both
sites have a variety of features with the focus being on beer ratings and public forums. The ratings are consumer driven so while wine uses folks with theoretically perfect palates to rate their products, these ratings feature everyday drinkers giving you an idea of what they think of the beer. Beer is rated on several categories: Aroma, Appearance, Flavor and Palate for RateBeer and Look, Smell, Taste, Feel and Drink for Beer Advocate. A composite score

website. Besides offering detailed information about all the beers and general beer knowledge, the web site feature Beer Finder. Beer Finder allows a consumer to search for a beer and find the bars or stores closest to a given location that offers that product. When you decide you just have to have your Great White, this is the way to find it.
There are so many more opportunities to use the internet for information. Social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook are becoming
increasingly popular and deserve some mention. In fact they deserve their own separate article and that will appear at a later date. For now, dig in to the suggestions here and increase your beer knowledge.

Like Thai? Try Sa Bai by Chef Rachel Albert
What used to be fast has turned slow. After a major internal and external renova-tion, 4121 E. Thomas Rd., the space that
once housed Tortas El Guero, and before that, Wendy’s, has been trans-formed into a new Thai venue, Sa Bai Modern Thai. The husband-and-wife team that own and operate it, Eric Willis, former manager at Wrigley Mansion for a decade, and Atchara (Holly), former manager at Tempe’s Thai Basil and other restaurants around the valley, opened their doors in November of 2010.
They aim to convey not only the flavor of Thailand but also the way of life, the idea that good friends, good food and a calm mind lead to a better, more satisfying life. They’ve created a bright, open and airy atmosphere, pleasant background music that’s audible but not too loud, and a place diners can go for happy hour, lunch, dinner, or take-out seven days a week.
They serve traditional Thai dishes and variations on classics - and a scaled back menu that makes ordering easier for those who feel overwhelmed when faced with more than 100 menu op-tions. You’ll find seven or eight apps, eight soup and salad options, three house specials, six stir fries, four rice and noodle dishes, five fish and seafood plates and a few desserts. They have a liquor license, lunch specials, and they add new items to their roster of recipes regularly. If you follow a special diet, let your server know. They will gladly replace rice with extra vegetables if you follow a low-carb diet, for example.
SaBai is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday. For more information visit www.sa-baiaz.com/ or call (602) 954-8774

NFlanny’s Tempe’s Newest Tap Room
Looking for a great tavern and eatery in Tempe? Want a place that serves a variety of great beers without your shoes sticking to the floor? Then visit Flanny’s Bar & Grill on the SE corner of Elliot and McClintock. This new, beer-cen-tric hot spot is a great place to drink local and get some great food too.
Flanny’s is truly family-owned and operated. Every member of the family works some ele-ment of the business started by John Flana-gan who got tired of the corporate world and opened Flanny’s last October. “LJ” Flanagan, John’s son, is the resident beer guru keeping new brews flowing every single week. His daughter Allie runs the web operations and John’s wife Jenny handles operations.
The bar boasts 16 tap handles and 55 bottled beers, most all of which are craft beers. If you go, try something new and tasty like Left Hand
Nitro Milk Stout, San Tan Devil’s Ale or a Tripel Karmeliet. Not sure which to try? Just ask for a sample shot of any of the 14 craft beers on tap. You’ll be a connoisseur in no time.
Flanny’s has a brand new menu of great grub too. You should try the BBQ Bacon Burger, “Walk in the Clouds” Grilled Chicken Sandwich, the Spicy Potatoes, the Mac and Cheese with Bacon, along with Rib Eye steaks, salads, sandwiches and appetizers.
Specials abound such as the Mon-Fri lunch special entrée item with fries and a drink for only $6.50. Happy Hour is from 2pm to 7pm, Monday thru Saturday and ALL DAY on Sunday when you can get $1 off wells and wine, .75 off domestic brews, $1 off craft drafts and bottles and $1 off appetizers. Reverse Happy Hour is Monday-Wednesday, 10pm-close.
The Flanagan’s run the type of establishment that makes you want to pa-tronize it - Clean and very friendly. Customers are greeted on a first-name basis and treated like family. The 24-seat granite bar is a great place to rub elbows with other beer-loving folks. If luxury is more your mood, try the couches and chairs in the lounge area. Acoustic music soloists en-tertain on Thursdays and Saturdays will find bands ranging from country to covers taking the stage area. Team Trivia entertains on Wednesday nights.
Flanny’s is located on 1805 E. Elliot Road, in Tempe, 85284. (480) 659-0870. www.Flannys.com. Follow their progress on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Yelp, and Beer Advocate.

Fashion Rocks at the Musical Instrument Museum March 31st Make your way to MIM tonight for a new sort of fashion event to hit the valley. Fittingly enough, fashion mixes with culture and global music, as one affects the other. Four top international designers bring together 16 runway looks showcasing how street trends and music influences fashion. The runway situated in MIM’s courtyard will feature Fender the Collection(USA), Black Russian Label(Russia&Africa), Galina Couture(Bulgaria), and Mariska(Hungary). Get there early and receive a free Swag Bag. 6:30pm doors open to a tour of the Target Gallery displaying the American Sabor exhibition followed by a live performance at 8:15pm and the fashion show at 8:30pm. Swing by the Blue Martini lounge at 10pm for the official after-party and some much needed fashionable drinks to complete the evening. Tickets $10-$15. www.themim.org 480.478.6000
11th Annual Phoenix Film Festival March 31st-April 7th You don’t have to make it out to LaLa land to acknowledge the greatness that is “film.” After all, film is more than just Hollywood endings anyway, it is art in pure form - give or take a few films that is. Come get an education and expand your cinema horizons! The following days will feature over 150 films, seminars and a few great parties. Friday night will kick off the festivities with live music and a preview of what is to come. However, Saturday night after a full day of screenings and workshops, save your energy for the big party featuring talent, producers, directors, drinks, mingling and a full night of live bands keeping the vibe going. Sunday night will host the award ceremony which announces the winner of the Copper Wing Award (Dun dun dun...). The festival will hold screenings, Q&A with directors/actors and will range in all film genres. The festivities end Thursday April 7th with the “Wrap Up Party” and a big film close out with celebrity guests. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll wear a beret. Be there. www.phoenixfilmfestival.org
Phoenix Fringe Festival April 1st-10th In 1947 a few rebel theater companies crashed the Edinburgh International Festival
Fringe and used their basic right of freedom to perform what they wanted to a surprised crowd. From that day, Fringe festivals dared artists to break away from the confining box of tradition and into an artistic dimension all their own. Phoenix jumped on the band wagon in 2008 and now invite you for their annual expression of limitless theater art. Venues throughout downtown will be home to eccentric shows, hilarious performances and improvisational plays. Come see 1 or 2 of the 150 shows to take over Phoenix this week! First Fridays downtown kicks off this artistic event so make use of the light-rail and head over. www.phxfringe.org Tickets to shows $10.
Global Cabaret After Party April 2nd Special guest Global Cabaret will be hosting the Fringe Festival after-party at the Ghost Lounge within the Hotel San Carlos. This show’s goal is to take traditional music, dance and performance from around the world, turn it upside down and filter it through a modern lens. Our take on the past. Join artists from Italy, Mexico, Malawi, and from around the U.S. as they give a new meaning to the presentation of culture. Sip on cocktails, munch on menu items and be sure to dress for the party. In other words, guests are encouraged to mix their traditional cultural outfits with modern concepts. Rhinestoned cowboy boots or hot pink furry Russian hats? Time to go to HobbyLobby. 9:30pm 602-253-4121.

RATTLERS CLIP TALONS IN COMPLETE VICTORYDefense Blanks Talons in First Half, Win 69-20 The Arizona Rattlers opened road play with an offensive outburst and a defensive strong-hold on the Tulsa Talons, winning 69-20 at the BOK Center on (March 28th) Monday night. The 49-point win proved to be the largest margin of victory in team history.
The Rattlers came out firing against the Talons, scoring 42 unanswered points in the first half. Former Talon, Fullback Odie Armstrong made his return to Tulsa with a three-yard TD scamper at the 10:28 mark of the first quarter to open the scoring frenzy. Wideout Nate Forse quickly followed up on the board with a three-yard TD catch with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter to set the score at 13-0. In back-to-back possessions, Tulsa’s QB Bobby Reid threw interceptions to the Rattlers’ fourth ranked scoring defense. Linebacker Kevin McCullough intercepted a Reid pass and returned it 10-yards to close the first quarter and put the Rattlers up 19-0. Defensive Back Marquis Floyd followed suit at the start of the second quarter by making an acrobatic interception on the sideline. Wide Receiver Trandon Harvey snared two TD grabs in the first half; his season long of 38 yards came at the 12:23 mark to widen the scoring gap at 26-0. Harvey finished the night with 11 receptions for 150 yards and four TDs.
The Rattler defense produced the second safety of the season, when Defensive Lineman Tyre Glasper took down Reid on a possession
that started at the Tulsa one-yard-line, putting the Rattlers up 28-0 with 10:27 remaining in the first half. The safety set up Wideout Rod Windsor for his 50th career touchdown catch on a five-yard scoring grab to set the score at 35-0 with 8:04 remaining in the half. Harvey closed the opening half scoring rampage with a 15-yard TD catch to head into the locker room with a 42-0 command. Rattler Quarterback Nick Davila led the team’s passing attack in the first half, going 15-of-22 for 158 yards and four TDs. In the second half, the Rattler defense surrendered its first touchdown of the game at the 8:45 mark of the third quarter when Talon WR TJ Williams grabbed a six-yard TD to make the score 42-6. Quarterback Trevor Harris started the second half, hitting Harvey with two consecutive scores of 32 and 12 yards, respectively, to put the Rattlers up 62-14 with 9:59 left in the fourth quarter. Defensive Lineman Marcus Pittman picked off Reid on the Tulsa three-yard-line to set up an Armstrong one-yard rush for a TD with 7:22 remaining in the contest. Wide Receiver Jason Geathers capped the final score with a 15-yard touchdown with under a minute left in the game. Harris finished the game going 8-for-13 for 104 yards and three TDs. The Rattlers are eager to keep the momentum alive with their next home game Saturday, April 2 against the Orlando Predators at US Airways Center; kickoff is slated for 7:00pm (AZ TIME).

LUPE FIASCO LIVE AT THE MESA AMPHITHEATREThursday, April 21st 2011 Billboards number one album belongs to Lupe Fiasco. Lupe has grown a legion of under-ground fans that are ready to start an uprising. This uprising continues when he hits the Mesa Amphitheatre on Thursday, April 21. Lupe Fiasco is fresh off the release of L.A.S.E.R.S. a critically acclaimed album that needed a push to see the light of day.
His unique sound and intriguing lyrics has cemented his reputation as an emcee with the ability to shock listeners while making them think, laugh, and dance – all without relying on vulgarity or standard hip-hop themes. Fiasco’s music and new hit single “The Show Goes On” proves that it can inspire. Prime Social Group presents this inspiration live on Thursday, April 21 at the Mesa Amphitheatre. Tickets are available online at www.mesaamp.com and in person at the Mesa Amphitheatre Box Office located at 263 N. Center St. on the south side of Building A. The Box Office is open Monday through Friday from 9AM to 4PM. More information can be found at www.mesaamp.com, www.primesocial.com and by calling 480-644-2560.

BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO THE VALLEY’S LIVE MUSIC SCENE
Prime Social Group (PSG) Leading the Charge to Bring Valley Music Enthu-siasts Concert Experiences They Won’t Soon Forget
Live music has always been under-rated in Arizona; next month should put the state on the map as one of the national powerhouses. How you ask? A movement has begun to bring the best entertainers in the world to valley cities at reasonable prices. A generation is trying to rip back the concert industry that has been dominated by conglomerate compa-nies interested only in the consumer’s dollar. A “prime” example of this movement is Prime Social Group. A company based in Columbus, OH that has focused on finding ways to bring top notch talent to college campuses without passing huge prices off to the music lover.
Prime Social Group (PSG) was founded by Zach Ruben and Adam Lynn in late 2010. These two young entrepreneurs saw the potential in the Phoenix market and like the pioneers of early America, looked to expand out West. In order to do this they needed someone who knew the market, the college scene and could target the lucrative Scottsdale night-life, they needed a local. They needed 24 year-old Jarid Dietrich. Why hire a young gun from Chicago to head up their operations in the fifth most populous city in the nation? Well, af-ter meeting Phoenix’s newest power broker it was clear why they chose him. We caught up with Jarid to ask a few questions about what he and PSG have in store for the desert city.
AZ weekly: So tell us a bit about Prime Social Group.
JD: Shameless plug here. I think our upcoming Lupe Fiasco concert at the Mesa Amphitheater says quite a bit about us. We bring the top artists in
the world to the people that want to see them most.
AZ weekly: Bringing the owner of the number one album in the country is quite the way to enter a market don’t you think?
JD: We have been looking for the right opportunity to break into this market for quite a while, we just happened to get the best selling artist! You have to realize the goal is to give the concert-goer an experience they will never forget. When you get a chance to give people exactly what they want you can’t pass on it.
AZ Weekly: I gotta say being 24 and having a job as the Director of Phoe-nix Operations must be pretty cool.
JD: Yeah it is. Never really thought about it like that though, ha-ha. I’m actually the Director of the entire West Coast; we are about to start working in Tucson, San Diego, and Seattle.
AZ Weekly: Wow rough life. You must be pretty good at what you do
JD: I mean it’s really all about the people around you and taking ad-vantage of situations. You should see what the founders of Prime Social, Zach (Ruben) and Adam (Lynn) are doing. These guys are so talented and so focused it’s pretty exciting. I recently got the chance to see them in action.
AZ Weekly: How does someone get involved in this industry?
JD: To be honest I have no idea. I grew up in a musical environment, my uncle is a Grammy award winning record producer, but for some reason the music gene totally skipped me, I mean I have no musical inclination at all; I can’t even hum very well.
AZ Weekly: So you’re saying you don’t need any musical background to have a cool job like this?
JD: Haha not really, you just need to know what people are looking for. In our opinion people want intimate per-formances at the right price. You can go and spend 75 dollars to see a Lady Gaga show with 20,000 other people or come see Lupe Fiasco for much less
at an intimate venue, you can prob-ably see the sweat on the entertainer. Umm I mean if you’re into that.
AZ Weekly: What do you think the people of Phoenix have to look for-ward to most?
JD: I think they need to stop looking forward and look around; there are some unbelievable talents in the area. Check out The New-F-o’s or Collec-tive Chaos. These guys are the next big things to come from this market and PSG will deliver them.
AZ: I’ll have to check them out! Well I think I can speak for the rest of the valley and say we look forward to seeing PSG grow. You got any extra tickets?
JD: Nah (winks) just get them before they sell out.
After talking with such invigorated youth, it gives us hope that the Ari-zona music scene will start to get the recognition it deserves. You can’t help but cheer for these guys! Take a look at www.Primesocial.com

The Real Nasty, a power trio based out of the San Francisco Bay Area will be playing The Rogue Bar in Scottsdale on March 31st in support of their newest full-length release, ‘Strang-ers and Friends’. The band is described as a single malt blend of the southern stylings of The Drive By Truckers and the upbeat, intoxicating vocals of early era Moe. Their rootsy tunes slide between Americana ballads and jammy, rock-a-billy ground-stompers.

Known as “the great performer,” pianist, composer and radio personality Ramsey Lewis is one of the jazz world’s most popular and endearing artists. He has recorded more than 80 albums and has received five gold records. Lewis infuses his pop-laced jazz with gospel, blues and classical music. “It’s his improvis-ing that’s striking,” wrote The Guardian. “In the way he hides a groove in a long, snaking line that gradually intensifies the pulse, in the delicate control of dynamics, and in a breadth of jazz resources and sureness of touch.”
