LUMINARY—N 2019

H ard to believe that two years have passed
since then Canon to the Ordinary Megan
Traquair and Canon Janet Beason visited Advent
the first weekend in November 2017 to lead us in a
par?cipatory strategic planning process for our
church. Many specific outcomes were iden?fied;
many dreams stated and planned for; many great
ideas were put onto a page in the hopes of its ac-
complishment. Well, how did we do? What s?ll
might need to be done? What else would we like
to do? What dream would we like to add to our
future life as a faith community in service to our
neighbors?
YOU are invited to come—we need to hear from
you!
Whether you par?cipated in this process then or
not, or were even a member of Advent or not, and
especially if you DID par?cipate in this planning
process in 2017, everyone is invited to join us in
Paine Hall on Saturday, November 9, 2019, for a re-
maneuvering workshop en?tled, “Renewing God’s
Dream for Advent.” The more people who come
and par?cipate, the greater vision we can create
and plan to implement. Plus, you’ll get to meet
new people from Advent and grow in your rela-
?onship with them.
When is it?
Saturday, November 9: We will gather in Paine Hall
for coffee and food bites at 8:30 AM and get un-
derway at 8:45 AM with a comprehensive review
of what we accomplished then and since then.
Canon Janet Beason is now the chair of the Com-
mission on Ministry for the Diocese of Arizona, and
as we all know, Bishop Megan Traquair is the now
the Bishop of Northern California; so neither of
them will be able to join us. However, our facilita-
tor for the day will be none other than Ms. Marilyn
Oyler, of Partners in Parcipaon in Phoenix.
Meet our facilitator for the day.
Marilyn Oyler is a veteran Master Facilitator of
over fiMy years and served on the team of design-
ers of the Technology of Par?cipa?on techniques
that we use. An original member of the Ins?tute
for Cultural Affairs, based in Canada but now world
-wide, Marilyn has led facilita?on trainings and
guided strategic planning workshops for organiza-
?ons literally around the world. She was also MY
trainer as I went to the TOP educa?onal workshops
in 2008 and following years to become a trained
facilitator in par?cipatory strategic planning and
other types of facilita?on for the Diocese of Arizo-
na. We will be in more than capable hands under
Marilyn’s guidance. Welcome Marilyn!
Who should go to “Renewing God’s Dream for Ad-
vent”?
Anyone interested in celebra?ng the last two years
of progress and accomplishment at Advent, and
who wishes to help dream about what we might
accomplish in the next two to three years is wel-
come. We always invite all heads of organiza?ons,
and all vestry members, as well as anyone in the
parish who is interested in Advent’s future mission
and ministry to our members and to the surround-
ing area—our true mission field.
Let Us Know You’re Coming so You Can Eat!
Please sign-up now to indicate your inten?on to
par?cipate, and so that the proper amount of food
can be obtained. There is a sign-up sheet in the
office, and one available in Paine Hall aMer church.
All are welcome!
As previously stated, we gather in Paine Hall for
coffee at 8:30 AM, lunch will be provided and we
should be finished by 1:30 PM, if not sooner. Either

way, we want you to stay for lunch as our way of
thanking you for your ?me and contribu?ons to the
conversa?ons and conclusions.
Let me thank you in advance for your commitment
to engage in this process, and I look forward to see-
ing you there and hearing from you and what you
feel God is calling us to do at this ?me in the life,
work, and ministry of Advent Episcopal Church, Sun
City West.
Blessings and peace,

Fall United Thank Offering will be held Sunday,
November 3, at both services. Informa?on, enve-
lopes and the “blue boxes” are on display in the
Narthex and Paine Hall. Your dona?on is a
“Thank You” for all the blessings you receive and
in turn your generosity will help your neighbors
near and far through grants to missions, parishes,
and programs selected by the UTO Commission.
Please use the blue and white UTO envelope or
designate “UTO” on your check. Note: If you miss
the November 3 collec?on, your giM may be sent
to the parish office or placed in the collec?on
plate any Sunday in November.

Our Sunday lunches are going great! We are now
serving close to 100 people weekly. We need
about six new people for one of our teams. Serv-
ing on a team includes preparing the food, serv-
ing, and clean up once every two months. Get
your friends together and join us in this mean-
ingful ministry for our church. These gatherings
may be the only meal some share with others
each week. Or maybe their only “homemade”
meal!

For Adult Educa?on programs they need GED tu-

teaching a group class (depending on the tutors
comfort zone). The center is open for these classes
Monday through Thursday from 9AM to 8PM. Tu-
tors just pick the ?me slot most convenient for
them. For GED, tutors help students to gain profi-

English, civics and social studies. Students work
independently and reach out to the tutor for help
during class ?me. Classes are Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday evenings from 6PM to 8PM.

A Month of Thanksgiving
By Rev. Ron Blezard
I came that they may have life,
and have it abundantly. John
10:10b
Thankful people are happy peo-
ple. It’s not just a feel-good slo-
gan on a refrigerator magnet or
bumper s?cker; it’s proven sci-
ence.
“Gra?tude helps people feel
more posi?ve emo?ons, relish
good experiences, improve their
health, deal with adversity, and
build strong rela?onships,” re-
ports Harvard Medical School’s
Healthbeat. That sounds like the
abundant life Jesus describes in
the Gospels, doesn’t it?
So why aren’t Chris?ans more
thankful and happy? While we all
some?mes face hardships that
can avert our thankfulness, many
of us simply take our blessings
for granted. Perhaps we have
succumbed to the lie we hear
from 24/7 adver?sing – that we
never have enough and never are
enough.
Hopeful news from researchers is
that thankfulness can be cul?vat-
ed. Those who consistently prac-
ce thankfulness develop gra?-
tude and happiness.
This November, the month of
Thanksgiving, make thankfulness
a daily spiritual prac?ce. Here are
some ideas for “A month of
Thanksgiving”:
Pray thanksgiving. In your morn-
ing and evening prayers,
thank God for your life and
whatever specific blessings
come to mind.
Keep a thanks diary. Every day
write down what you are
thankful for and why. Chal-
lenge yourself to find and
pray about 10 things daily.
Express thank you. Go out of
your way to express thanks to
the people you encounter
every day with a kind word or
a note.
Create a thankfulness calendar.
Every morning write some-
thing on your calendar for
which you are grateful to
God, and think, pray and
meditate on it un?l bed?me.
Prac?ce thankfulness consistent-
ly and you might be surprised to
find yourself enjoying the abun-
dant life Jesus promises us.

you to Barb Wolfe who filled many shoes on that
day.
Fall proves to be a very busy season at Advent. Up-
coming events include the Arts & CraMs show, HHH
bake sale, Undie Sunday and the Men’s Club
Thanksgiving Dinner. Between shopping, baking
and ea?ng we will all be happy parishioners.
Please support the upcoming “Undie Sunday” that
benefits the homeless children who aVend the Chil-
dren’s First Academy. If you would like to
make a monetary dona?on instead of shopping see
Judy Purdy.
On November 30 at 9:00 AM we will decorate Paine
Hall and the church for Christmas. If you have some
spare ?me come join us; it’s always fun to see the
end results.
Lastly, “Save the Date” December 19 for the ECW
Christmas Tea and general mee?ng.
FYI we are not col-
lec?ng items for the

rummage sale at this
