The LuK Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) has

been used by car manufacturers as

    original equipment for decades.

    Why? Because excellent noise and

    vibration damping is extremely im-

portant in order to satisfy the

    increasing demands for driving

    comfort. A clutch system therefore

must not only ensure safe coupling and

    decoupling of engine and transmission,

but also absorb vibrations to prevent

    gearbox rattle and body boom.

Less vibration in the drive train more

    momentum in your business

    The DMF provides technical benefits

manufacturers cannot ignore! As a sup-

plementary part of the clutch, the DMF

is positioned between the engine and

    the transmission to neutralize vibration

and relieve the strain on the crankshaft.

Thus the DMF meets the ever greater

    demands for smooth running, driving

    comfort and fuel efficiency.

The DMF, like the clutch itself, is subject

to normal wear and tear. It is therefore

important to test and replace the DMF,

    if necessary.

    In summary:

    fulfills the increased demand for

    driving comfort

    reduces noise and fuel consumption

must also be checked during a clutch

    repair and replaced if necessary

    cannot be retrofitted

The number of new vehicles fitted with a LuK

Dual Mass Flywheel continues to increase.

  • ... with a thriving future!

Today, every second passenger car or light commercial vehicle

which rolls off the assembly line is equipped with a DMF and

that share is still increasing! The trend towards more engine

torque and more gear speeds ensures excellent prospects

for the DMF. Because the DMF offers just what the market

needs: more driving comfort and less fuel consumption. And

due to the increasing market share in the OE sector, the DMFs

business potential in the aftermarket is also growing.

    In short:

a success story for more than 20 years

expanding market share in original equipment

    (every second car in Europe)

    A success story

Since its launch in 1984, the LuK Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF)

has been fitted as original equipment in more and more car

models. And that for a very good reason where a conven-

tional single-mass clutch and rigid flywheel reach their limits,

the DMF, with its decoupled dual masses and a torsion angle

of up to 180, can absorb much more oscillating energy.

  • The characteristics of each DMF areprecisely designed for its correspondingapplication. Springs, dampers andmasses must be perfectly harmonisedwith the vehicles drive train components.

  • The following vehicle manufacturers trust

in superior original equipment quality made

    by LuK:

Audi, Bertone, BMW, Chevrolet, Citron, Fiat, Ford,

Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lancia, Land

    Rover/Range Rover, LDV, Mazda, Mercedes-

Benz, MG, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel,

    Peugeot, Porsche, Puch, Renault, Rover,

    Saab, Seat, Ssangyong, Suzuki, Toyota,

    Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Volvo.

The DMF is on the way to becoming

an OE standard in passenger cars and

    light commercial vehicles with almost

    every leading vehicle manufacturer. The

list of makes and models ranges from A as

in Audi to V as in Volvo and speaks for itself.

OE quality in its full variety

  • In order for you, the independent workshop, to benefit most

from the DMF, LuK strives to make its handling as easy as

possible. The following useful advice helps you to detect

wear and tear and damage patterns on a DMF.

    Friction surface A:

Scoring marks on the friction surface are

caused by the rivets of a worn out clutch.

Torque can no longer be transferred and

the friction surface is subjected to

    continued wear.

    Friction surface B:

Cracks in the friction surface occur as a

result of thermal overload, caused e.g. by

a worn out clutch disk. The DMFs oper-

ational reliability is no longer maintained.

    Plain bearing:

Radial bearing clearance of up to 0.17mm

is within the limits of normal wear and tear.

Caution: If clearance exceeds 0.17mm, in-

creased tilting movement of the secondary

    flywheel occurs.

    Identify , verify , act!

The basic rule is: A DMF cannot be repaired, it must be

replaced. Whether or not a DMF requires replacement can

be determined by the following symptoms:

    DMF outer edges :

Blue/purple discolouration at the outer edges,

on the connecting bars where the DMF is

bolted to the crankshaft, on the back side

as well as other visible damage indicates

that very high thermal loads were applied.

    Starter ring gear:

A heavily worn starter ring gear is caused

by a defective starter, this can be accompa-

nied by noise emission at engine start-up.

    Sensor ring:

Bent sensor ring teeth indicate mechanical

damage and are detrimental to the smooth

    running of the engine.

    Grease egress:

Little grease egress is no reason for concern.

If however more than 20g have leaked, the

amount of grease left in the housing is no

longer sufficient to ensure effective lubri-

    cation of the DMF components.

Europe relies on the DMF. Be ready!
