Luke 9:51When the days drew near for him to be taken up,

he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

Luke 11:1-131One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to

him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

Luke 11:1-132He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“ ‘Father, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread.

4Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.

And lead us not into temptation.’ ”

Luke 11:1-135Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6a friend

of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7And suppose the one

inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed.

I can’t get up and give you anything.’

Luke 11:1-138I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will

surely get up and give you as much as you need.

Luke 11:1-139“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be

opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the

one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Luke 11:1-1311“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If

you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will

your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Luke 11:2-42He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“ ‘Father, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread.

4Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.

And lead us not into temptation.’ ”

The “Disciples Prayer”

Luke 11:2-42He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“ ‘Father, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread.

4Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.

And lead us not into temptation.’ ”

WHO are you praying to?

“What comes into our minds when we think

about God is the most important thing about us… For this reason the gravest

question before the Church is always God Himself, and the most portentous fact about any man is not what he at a given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to be like. ~ A. W. Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy, chapter 1.

Luke 11:11-1311“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If

you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will

your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Five Requests in the Lord’s Prayer2. Your Kingdom Come

The Kingdom of God

Luke 4:43But he said, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because

that is why I was sent.”

The Kingdom of God

Luke 8:1After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good

news of the kingdom of God.

The Kingdom of God

Luke 9:11He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed

healing.

The Kingdom of God

Luke 10:8-98“When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat

what is offered to you. 9Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has

come near to you.’”

The Kingdom of God

Acts 1:3After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of

forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

The Kingdom of God

Exodus 15:18“The LORD reigns for ever and ever.”

The Kingdom of God

Exodus 15:18“The LORD reigns for ever and ever.”

 Psalm 103:19

The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.

The Kingdom of God

Isaiah 52:7How beautiful on the mountains

are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace,

who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation,

who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

The Kingdom of God

2 Chronicles 13:8“And now you plan to resist the kingdom of the

LORD, which is in the hands of David’s descendants.

The Kingdom of God

Judges 21:25In those days Israel had no king;

everyone did as they saw fit.

The Kingdom of God

Revelation 11:1515 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,

and he will reign for ever and ever.”

The Kingdom of God

“In the OT the phrase expresses an eschatological hope for a period when God’s salvation would be realized, when his dominion over the minds and lives of human beings would be accomplished, and they would be withdrawn from subjection to danger, evil, and sin. The phrase implies also a divine guidance of human history (Judg 21:25), thwarted no longer by hostileopposition. In this sense the OT idea wouldassume a specific determination in the NT inview of the Christ-event:

“The kingdom of God enters history in Jesus’ ministry, passion, death, and resurrection. As the Christ and the risen Lord, he is the Father’s special anointed agent for the preaching and establishment of this dominion henceforth among human beings.

Luke 11:2-42He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“ ‘Father, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread.

Five Requests in the Lord’s Prayer3. Give us each day our Daily Bread

Deuteronomy 8:3-5, 16-183 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and

then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so

the LORD your God disciplines you…

The Bread from God

Luke 11:2-42He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“ ‘Father, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread.

4Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.

And lead us not into temptation.’ ”

Five Requests in the Lord’s Prayer4. Forgive us our Sins

Romans 1:21-2521For although they knew God, they neither

glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish

hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and

animals and reptiles.

Why do we need forgiveness from sin?

Romans 1:21-2524Therefore God gave them over in the sinful

desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

25They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Why do we need forgiveness from sin?

Sin is anything I do, say, or believe that does not bring about

God’s Name to be Hallowed

or

God’s Kingdom to Come

Luke 11:2-42He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“ ‘Father, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread.

4Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.

And lead us not into temptation.’ ”

Five Requests in the Lord’s Prayer4. Forgive us our Sins

Luke 4:16b-2118“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for

the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19to proclaim the year

of the Lord’s favor.”

Jesus’ Mission Statement

“The explanation added to it is not to be understood as a “condition,”; rather, it springs from the realization that God’s forgiveness cannot be expected if human forgiveness is withheld. This petition thus reveals a new sense in which God’s fatherhood implies anawareness of human brotherhood.

~ Joseph A. Fitzmyer, The Gospel according to Luke I–IX: Introduction, Translation, and Notes, vol. 28,Anchor Yale Bible (New Haven; London: Yale University Press, 2008), 899.

“The “for” of v 4b does not introduce a relationship of quid pro quo between divine and human forgiveness, as though God’s forgiveness were dependent on human activity (cf. 6:35; 23:34!). Instead, Jesus grounds the disciples’ request for divine forgiveness in their own practices of extending forgiveness. As in previous texts (esp. 6:36), Jesus spins human behavior from the cloth of divinebehavior; the embodiment of forgiveness in thepractices of Jesus’ followers is a manifestationand imitation of God’s own character.

Luke 11:2-42He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Five Requests in the Lord’s Prayer5. Lead us not into Temptation

James 1:2-4, 13-152Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever

you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let

perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything…

13When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he

tempt anyone; 14but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;

and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Testing from God?

James 1:2-4, 13-152Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever

you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let

perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything…

13When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he

tempt anyone; 14but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;

and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Testing from God?

Hebrews 12:7-117Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not

disciplined by their father? 8If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—

then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9Moreover, we have all had

human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we

submit to the Father of spirits and live!

Testing from God?

Hebrews 12:7-1110They disciplined us for a little while as they

thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11No

discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have

been trained by it.

Testing from God?

Psalm 23:1-31The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4Even though I walk through the

valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff,

they comfort me.

Testing from God?

“This sentence has the force of “do not cause us not to succumb to temptation.” Integrity is a result of recognizing that without God’s leading we would lead ourselves straight into sin. Thus this request also reflects a depth of spiritual sensitivity, since itunderstands just how prone to sin

we are, if we do not seek God’s face.
