Passover in Jerusalem Read aloud: Luke 2:40-42, Exodus 23:14-17

Discuss Passover in Jerusalem: Following the return of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus from Egypt, Scripture records nothing more about Jesus’ childhood except in Luke 2:40. As Jesus grew up, He grew strong in the Lord and was filled with wisdom and God’s grace. In obedience to the Law (Ex. 23:14-17), Joseph took his family and went to Jerusalem for the celebration of the Feast of Passover.

Map: Label the city of Jerusalem.

Draw and have students draw: Joseph, Mary, and Jesus on their way to Jerusalem.

Read aloud: Luke 2:48-50

Discuss The Father’s Business: Upon finding Jesus, His mother questioned Him, and He responded that He had remained at the temple because He had to be about His “Father’s business.”

Draw and have students draw: Jesus talking to Mary.

Jesus Returned with His Family

Read aloud: Luke 2:51-52

Discuss Jesus Returned with His Family: Jesus returned to Nazareth with Joseph and Mary and continued in subjection to them. He grew physically, gained wisdom, and found favor with men and in the sight of God.

Draw and have students draw: Jesus growing up.

Lesson Review:

1. Why were Joseph, Mary, and Jesus going to Jerusalem? To celebrate the Feast of Passover.
