I t’s difficult to trash a movie that starts out with one of the (for lack of a better word) coolest scenes since the opening of the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale. But the premise of Lucy is, while a great one on paper, is still a bit off with too much focus given to the action and not enough on actual story structure. Walking out of the theater, one could not help but feel as though director Luc Bes- son – who created one of my favourite films in Léon: The Professional – wrote the script based off of notes written on a napkin while thinking of the greatest things he could put in a film. Besson gave these notes a name and Lucy is what we got. The film revolves around 25-year-old Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), an American living in Taiwan who is eventually tricked into be- coming a drug mule by her boyfriend. When things go wrong, a drug lord named Mr Jang orders bags of a special new drug – dubbed CPH4 – to be sewn into her abdomen. The same thing happens to three other people. When one of Mr Jang’s henchman kicks Lucy in the stomach, the bag breaks and the drug is released into her system. As a reuslt, she begins acquiring increasingly powerful and enhanced physical and mental capa- bilities, telepathy, telekinesis, mental time travel, and she can choose not to feel pain or other discomforts, in addition to other special abilities. Over time, these powers grow and, with the help of a local police captain and a sci- entist, she sets out to find the other three people with the drug and capture Mr Jang. My problem with this film is this: as the film goes on, her powers grow and she be- comes devoid of emotions. Eventually, Lucy gets to the point where she cannot feel pain and becomes God-like, something that is dif- ficult for the audience to have a vested inter- est in since she can now go and do whatever she wants with no real threat. There are scenes in the film where Bes- son’s avant-garde nature gets the better of him but are then put aside. This is jarring to the audience since the tone changes over time, and not in a good way. By the end of the film, Lucy falls victim to a thin plot and higher ambitions. Musings on the history and role of human existence, in addition to almost unfathomable mutations, betrays it’s action-film beginning. While Johannson nails her role as a con- stantly evolving femme-fatale, the whole thing devolves into a hot mess of drugs, ac- tion, and existentialism. LUCY
