SOLUTIONS IN THE EXTREME:JURASSIC COAST, WEYMOUTH

This project was based in Weymouth, a town that forms part of the Jurassic Coast. The brief was to design an Information centre on the beach or cliff face that gave passers by, and tourists, a brief history of the geological discoveries in that area.

I decided to design my building around the I decided to design my building around the discovery of the Scelidosaurus bones that were found in that area. This influenced the shape and materiality of my building as well as the area of the Jurassic Coast it was situated in.

I found this project challenging but particularly interesting as it was completely different interesting as it was completely different from anything we had done before. I found that I really got involved with the history and geology of the area, as well as the concept behind my design.

This project gave me the opportunity to experiment with different models using the workshop space and a variety of materials. workshop space and a variety of materials. It also gave me the freedom to explore different ways of expressing my designs, through sketches, paintings, models and collages.

PALLIATIVE CARE CENTRE:SNEINTON, NOTTINGHAM

This project was based in Sneinton in Nottingham, the brief was to design a palliative care centre. The room types and sizes were specified in the brief and included therapy rooms, meeting rooms and a large kitchen. The brief required a building with spaces that required a building with spaces that were both public and private.

My concept behind this project was Ivy, I wanted the building to support its patients the way the Ivy is supported. I added a central courtyard to create a private area for the patients as the site was situated on a busy road. was situated on a busy road.

I found this project really interesting as finding the balance between public and private was testing. I feel that I designed a building that fitted in with its context but was also aesthetically pleasing and suitable for its purpose.

PARA-SITE:NEWTON-ARKWRIGHT, NOTTINGHAM

This project involved designing a studio space for our fellow architecture students within the existing Newton-Arkwright building.

The project was named Para-site because the studio space aimed to take over and embed itself within the existing building.

I took inspiration from the history of the I took inspiration from the history of the Newton-Arkwright building and found that the original building, built in the 1870s, had a spire in the place of the existing courtyard. After more research I also discovered that the Newton building had an original function of a lace factory, connecting the building with Nottingham's rich history with the lace industry. Nottingham's rich history with the lace industry.

I wanted to create a building with different patterns of lace creating a distinction between the public and private spaces, while still letting light into the studio spaces.

CIVIC ARCHITECTURE:CHAPEL QUARTER, NOTTINGHAM

This project was based in Nottingham city centre where we were given the choice of four possible sites. The brief required that we design a civic building but the typology of that building was developed by us.

The site I chose was located in Chapel Quarter, a busy area of Nottingham situated Quarter, a busy area of Nottingham situated close to market square with a small shopping arcade, restaurants and bars.

The chapel quarter site appealed to me because I believed that it had hidden potential, while walking through the shopping arcade I noticed lots of independent arts and crafts shops as well as record shops and art shops as well as record shops and art galleries.

I decided to build a amphitheatre and drama school that was an extension of the existing public square already located on my site.

I took inspiration from the existing shopping arcade situated next to the site and wanted to create a public boulevard that allowed to create a public boulevard that allowed the public to immerse themselves within the building.

CONFLICT AND RESOLUTION:NEWARK CASTLE, NEWARK

This project was based in the town of

Newark. Situated in the ruins of Newark

castle, a castle partly destroyed by the

English Civil War in 1646, the site is now

owned and maintained by English Heritage.

The project was to design a civil war

museum and aimed to create a modern yet museum and aimed to create a modern yet

sympathetic design for the site.

This project appealed to me as I already

had an interest in building conservation and

believed this project would nicely

complement the topic of my dissertation,

“Traditional or Modern? An Investigation

into Different Styles of Conservation”.into Different Styles of Conservation”.

When visiting the site I was instantly

intrigued by the different parts of the castle

that had been reconstructed, and how they

too had become ruins. This inspired my

concept of the decay and the rise and fall

of a building from its construction to its ruin.

Through my visuals and models I wanted to show the contrast in both the exterior and interior spaces.

Visual 1 shows the exterior of the building and includes the castle gate house and the existing bandstand. I wanted this visual to show the copper facade of my building and show the copper facade of my building and how it contrasts with the rough castle walls.

Visual 2 shows the Main Gallery and ways in which artefacts in the civil war museum may be arranged. This visual shows the dramatic balconies and viewing boxes created by the intersecting geometric forms of the building.

TECH AND ENVIRONMENT:SPECIAL EMPHASIS PROJECT

This project was based around our final design studio project and involved focusing on certain technical aspects of our building. The project I focused on was a design for a civil war museum based Newark castle, a site owned by English Heritage.

Along with ventilation and heating and cooling Along with ventilation and heating and cooling strategies we were also required to produce one 1:20 and two 1:5 details of the most interesting parts of our buildings.

For my 1:20 detail i chose to show the connection between the castle walls, glazed walkway and copper structure. Through my 1:20 detail I wanted to show how I would 1:20 detail I wanted to show how I would attach the glazed roof to the castle walls while creating as little damage to the castle walls as possible.

In my 1:5 details I wanted to show in more detail the connection between the copper walls and glazed roof as well as the way the copper panelling would be attached. I also copper panelling would be attached. I also wanted to show a detail of the window-wall detail for the large glazed windows around the building.

CONNECTION DETAILS

PRIMARY STRUCTURE

These are some diagrams to show how I propose to connect the steel frame beams and columns.

This is the primary frame structure that I propose for my building using 203x203 steel I-beams spaced 3m appart throughout the structure. I believe a steel structure to be the most structure to be the most suitable to support the building without comromising the dramaticform.

I have included some of the sketches I drew during trips to Rotterdam and Amsterdam, as well some sketches of prestigious buildings such as The Sage, prestigious buildings such as The Sage, by Foster and Partners in my hometown of Newcastle Upon Tyne.
