We have a chance to change that on 6th May. Our society is highly inter-dependent and technologically advanced. People expect technology to provide for every need - energy, food, transport, entertainment... This is fine until something goes wrong. When something bad happens, we look to the government to take action, to provide leadership. But is our current government, and the parliament that guides and scrutinises it, up to the job? There is lots of expertise in law, economics, politics, business... Which would be fine if that was what fed and clothed people and kept them warm and dry. But how good are they at anticipating future problems and preparing well, so that they don’t hit us so hard? Today’s problems, and tomorrow’s likely challenges include; the global economy, climate change, resource depletion and energy security. The likely solutions include rebuilding the local/UK economy and using resources far more sustainably. These are areas where engineers have a vital contribution to make to policy and decision-making. Their voices need to be heard, not just lobbying outside parliament, but within it. Lucy Care has a background in science and engineering and experience of politics and local government.
