Notes

Use Henri Matisse Paper Cut-Out exercise as a pre-assessment for this lesson

Informal Assessment: Paper-cutting technique checklist on Henri Matisse cut-out exercise

Formal Assessment: Self Evaluation/Rubric/Critique

Lesson Accommodations: • Provide face templates • Provide adaptive scissors • Display visuals on cutting techniques clearly

Lesson Modifications: • Face templates

Additional Challenges: • Add fauna to self-portrait with local birds • Ask students to include state flora and fauna outside of example

Lesson Session

Flora Self-Portrait 1

Engage

• Complete “Henri Matisse” paper cut-outs mini-lesson as a pre-assessment for cutting tech-niques

• View PowerPoint with artwork by Frida Kahlo and ask students: • What is the first thing you notice about this self-portrait? • What details does she add to her self-portrait? • What do these details tell you about her culture?

Develop

• Discuss state trees, flowers, and birds (flora and fauna) • What makes a tree and bird special to different states? • How do you relate to any of these states? • Is anyone from a country outside the United States? How does nature play a role in

your culture? • Have students plan their self portrait by selecting at least 3 types of flora that they identify

with

Create

• Direct students to select paper that best matches their facial coloring • Lead class in a step-by-step construction of a paper cut-out self-portrait

• Refer to previous proportion discussions and visuals • Start with head shape including ears and neck • Add eyes with irises and eyelids - use a sharpie to add pupil and lashes • Add nose and lips

• Demonstrate how to properly glue down all the pieces that make the face

Reflect

• Ask students to reflect on what specific flora they will choose to include in their portrait and to come to class ready to add flora details

• Students should collect any necessary visuals for following class

Lesson Session

Flora Self-Portrait 2-3

Engage

• View prototype and have students identify upcoming steps • Review Frida Kahlo’s work • Ask students to share what cultural flora they’ve decided to represent • Review paper cutting techniques - show student examples from Henri Matisse exercise and

have students identify cases of overlapping, cutting to reveal lines

Develop

• Demonstrate how to tear paper in various ways to create hair for both boys and girls, long and short hair, and eyebrows

• Demonstrate how to cut out various leaf shapes - show the importance of not discarding scraps. Take a basic leaf shape and alter it in numerous ways

• Direct students to share self-portrait in progress with a partner • Partners should discuss and make recommendations about the proportion of the face and

hair/flora choices • Refer students to the cutting techniques chart

Create

• Students create a collage self portrait and combine with a collaged mat frame to make a pa-per cut-out self-portrait inspired by the connection Frida Kahlo made between culture and nature

• Students will use a variety of paper-cutting techniques, demonstrating an understanding of at least three techniques

Reflect

• Students complete a checklist informal assessment listing the paper cutting techniques and attach it to the back of their collage

Lesson Session

Flora Self-Portrait 4

Engage

• Ask students to share how they relate to their nature choices through culture • Students complete a reflection sheet stating their personal culture, flora choices, and (if ap-

plicable) fauna choices

Develop

• Demonstrate how to add fauna for students who are ahead or working more efficiently as an added challenge

• Re-demonstrate gluing and how to attach the self-portrait to the collage mat frame

Create

• Students may finish their collages by attaching frame, adding fauna, and any necessary de-tails based on their self-assessment from the previous class to self-check their work

Reflect

• Have students update their project checklist taped to the back of their piece to self-check for formal assessment

• Complete final reflection sheet and submit with artwork
