NOTES

1. Intervals. This LO complies with DA program-ming to extend intervals and conservelubricants. When practicable, lubricationservices will be made to coincide with thevehicle ’s Semiannual (“S”) PreventiveMaintenance Service. For this purpose, a 10%tolerance (variation) in specified lubricationpoint mileage is permissible. Those vehiclesnot accumulating 1,000 mi (1,600 km) in a 6-month period will be lubricated at the time of“S” Preventive Maintenance Service.

2. Army Oil Analysis Program(AOAP). AOAP does not apply to M998 seriesvehicles.

3. For Operation of Equipment in ProtractedCold Temperatures Below 5°F (-26°C).Remove lubricants prescribed in key fortemperatures above -15°F (-26°C). Relubricatewith lubr icants spec i f ied in key fortemperatures below -15°F (-26°C). If OEAlubricant is required to meet the temperatureranges prescribed in the key, OEA lubricant isto be used in place of OE/HDO 10 lubricant forall temperature ranges where OE/HDO 10 isspecified in the key.

4. Crankcase.

CAUTION●

There are two marks on thedipstick, “FULL” and “ADD 1 QT.”The quantity of oil required toraise the oil level from “’ADD 1QT" mark to “FULL” mark is 1 qt(0.9 l). Do not overfill crankcase.Overfilling will result in damageto engine.

If water or metal particles aredetected during crankcasedraining, notify Direct SupportMaintenance personnel beforerefilling crankcase.

NOTE

If oil level is above “FULL”, it may

Replace oil filter each time crank-case is drained. Fill crankcase with8 qt (7.6 l) of engine oil. Crankcasecapacity is 7 qt (6.6 l) and oil filtercapacity is 1 qt (0.9 l).

Oil is added to crankcase throughfill tube which is located on top-ofengine.

Check crankcase oil level daily. Start engineand visually check for oil leaks at drain plugand oil f i lter. Stop engine and allowapproximately one minute for oil to drain backinto oil pan; recheck oil level with dipstick. Onvehicles equipped for deep water fording, thedipstick has a seal which fits into the openingof the dipstick tube. The dipstick handle mustbe turned counterclockwise to be releasedbefore dipstick is withdrawn. Turn handleclockwise to seat after installing dipstick.Change oil every 3,000 mi (4,800 km) orsemiannually, whichever occurs first.

5. Engine Oil Filter.

CAUTION

If water or metal particles aredetected during oil filterreplacement, notify Direct SupportMaintenance personnel beforerefilling crankcase.

NOTE

Replace o i l f i l ter each t imecrankcase is drained.

Change oil filter every 3,000 mi (4,800 km) orsemiannually, whichever occurs first.

6. Fuel Filter. Replace filter element every6,000 mi (9,600 km) or annually, whicheveroccurs first. Replace water separator element ifunserviceable.

be due to oil cooler drain back.Operate the engine for oneminute, shut down, wait oneminute, and recheck oil level.

7. Transmission.

CAUTION

Do not overfill transmission. Thefluid level rises as the fluidtemperature increases. Therefore,do not check level before thetransmission has reached normaloperating temperature. The safeoperating level is within thecrosshatch marks on the dipstick.Overfilling will result in damageto transmission. If water or metal particles aredetected during transmissiondraining and filter elementreplacement, notify Direct Sup-port Maintenance personnelbefore refilling transmission.Use Dexron II for filling transmis-sion. Failure to use Dexron II willcause damage to transmission.

NOTEReplace transmission oil filter eachtime transmission is drained. Filltransmission with 6 qt (5.7 l) ofDexron II.

Check and fill transmission to proper levelweekly. Operate transmission through alloperating ranges to fill cavities and fluidpassages. With vehicle positioned on levelground, a l low engine to id le , shifttransmission to neutral, and apply parkingbrake. Check fluid level on dipstick. It shouldregister within the crosshatch marks underthe conditions stated above. On vehiclesequipped for deep water fording, the dipstickhas a seal which fits into the opening of thedipstick tube. The dipstick handle must beturned counterclockwise to be released beforedipstick is withdrawn. Turn dipstick handleclockwise to seat after installing dipstick.Change fluid every 12,000 mi (19,200 km) orbiennially, whichever occurs first.

8. Transfer Case.

CAUTION

● If water or metal particles aredetected during transfer casedraining, notify Direct SupportMaintenance personnel beforerefilling transfer case.

● Use Dexron II for filling transfercase. Failure to use Dexron II willcause damage to transfer case.

NOTEFill transfer case with 3.5 qt (3.3 l)of Dexron II.

Check transfer case fluid level every 3,000 mi(4,800 km) or semiannually, whichever occursfirst. Remove fill plug and gasket. Level shouldbe within 1/2 in. (12.7 mm) of fill plug openingwhen vehicle is level. Install fill plug andgasket, and tighten to 35 lb-ft (47 N-m).Change fluid every 12,000 mi (19,200 km) orbiennially, whichever occurs first.

9. Differentials and Geared Hubs.NOTE

● Fill each axle differential with 2qt (1.9 l) of GO.

● Fill each geared hub with 1 pt(0.5 l) of Go.

Check gear lubricant level every 3,000 mi(4,800 km) or semiannually, whichever occursfirst. Geared hub level should be within 1/2 in.(12.7 mm) of fill plug opening, when lubricantis cold or to plug level when hot. Axledifferential level should be within 1/4 in.(6.4 mm) of fill plug opening when lubricant iscold or to plug level when hot. Change gearlubricant only when required by maintenancerepair action or if contaminated by water orother foreign material.

10. Propeller Shaft Universal and Slip Joints.Every 3,000 mi (4,800 km) or semiannually, whichever occurs first, lubricate using low pressurelubrication gun. If operating conditions aresevere or abnormal, service at 1,000 mi (1,600 km).

11. Steering Hydraulic System.

CAUTION

Use Dexron II for filling powersteering reservoir. Failure to useDexron II will cause damage topower steering system.

Check the fluid level in the power steeringreservoir monthly and adjust level asnecessary. If fluid is hot, level should bebetween "HOT" and "COLD" marks on the capindicator.
