Tracey Tangeman & : National Guard Tracey Tangeman (assistant U.S. attorney) and Jon

Richardson (defense attorney) discussed Miranda rights which were created in 1966. In Miranda v. Arizona (1966), the U.S. Supreme Court held that the admission of an elicited incriminating statement by a suspect not informed of these right violates the Fifth Amendment and the Sixth Amendment right to counsel. Thus, if law enforcement officials decline to offer a Miranda warning to an individual in their custody, they may interrogate that person and act upon the knowledge gained, but may not use that person’s statements as evidence

against him or her in a criminal trial. In addition to the Fifth and Sixth Amendments, Miranda rights also include the Fourth Amendment (unreasonable search and seizure) and the Fourteenth Amendment (equal protection, due process, and fundamental fairness). The remedy for Miranda violations is exclusion of evidence unless the statement is deemed voluntary whereby the evidence could be used for impeachment only. Other procedural rights which a person is entitled to are: a speedy trial; arraignment/bail; exculpatory evidence; a jury trial; the presumption of innocence; the government’s burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt; allocution at sentencing; and, an appeal, appellate attorney, and a transcript. Tracey discussed several cases where Miranda came into play. Defendants cannot be deprived of medication as well. Jon Richardson discussed when King Henry VIII tried to annul/divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. Sir Thomas More, a lawyer, councilor, and Lord High Chancellor of England, opposed the King’s separation from the Catholic Church and asked would you give the devil the benefit of the law. Jon argued, yes the devil should be given the benefit of the law because without it people can coerced. It is for our own sake. We should be afraid of our own power. Jon said, that Miranda “ties our hands at our best so that when we are at our worst we are protected.” You have to do it the right way and follow the law. Our society doesn’t want false or coerced confessions. The devil must be given the benefit of the law.

The New Member Committee is hosting its annual service project. This is a great opportunity to spend some time with your fellow Rotarians, do some good in our community, and introduce your family/significant other to the Rotary community. We have adopted the national service group, Kids Against Hunger that is run locally by ISOH/Impact. We have an opportunity to pack 25,000 meals in a two hour window. This year's project will be held on Saturday May 21, 2016 (see schedule below). We need approximately 80-100 volunteers to pack the 25,000 meals, so please invite your family/friends to come help out (child volunteers should be 8+). Finally, there will be a phenomenal fellowship opportunity directly after the pack with some food and hopefully good weather! The day’s project is being hosted by Dick & Fran Anderson at the Andersons Complex (1833 S. Holland Sylvania, Maumee, OH 43537). Pack Day Schedule (Volunteers needed) Set Up: 8-9:30 am Parking: 8:45-10 am Registration: 9-10 am Pack: 10 am-12:00 pm Fellowship: 12:00-1:00 pm To sign up, call (419.241.7060) or email the office [email protected]).

Clean Up at LSOP—May 14th

Claire’s Day was launched 15 years ago with the help of Toledo Rotary. Next week authors and illustrator’s who are coming to Claire’s Day will be at 40+ schools in NW Ohio impacting over 15,000 students! Over 900 students will receive Claire’s Award for Reading Excellence presented to the most improved reader in the class; these students will be picking out their very own book that they earned and for many it will be the first book that they have ever had. I wanted to thank Toledo Rotary for helping us get started and for the support over the years.

PP Brad Rubini

Congratulations Claire’s Day

Get to know . . . Frank Bloomquist Describe your profession and what is your favorite part of it? I am currently the market president for Medical Mutual in Northwest Ohio. We currently have

approximately 475 employees in NW Ohio and my region consists of 26 counties. I would

have to say that my favorite part of my job in being involved in the community. In my

previous role, I traveled 90% of the time ,and it was very difficult to be actively involved in the

community.

What do you like to do when you are not working? I have an extensive list of hobbies that I enjoy doing in my “spare” time. I enjoy competitive

pistol shooting, playing golf, tennis, fly fishing, working out, and reading. The biggest

challenge is finding balance between work, family, and all of my varied hobbies.

What is the most satisfying benefit you get from being a Rotarian? In all honesty, I’m not sure. I’m so new to the organization that I’m still learning all of the

different facets of Rotary.

Tell us about your family. My wife Debbi just recently earned her PhD in curriculum education after 4 long years. Tanner and Kennedy (twins) are juniors in

high school attending St John’s and Central Catholic. We are just beginning the process of applying to college. We also have three

dogs.

Share one thing people do not know about you. Three years ago I had an opportunity to spend 24 hours on the USS Ronald Regan. While landing on an aircraft carrier was an

incredible experience, learning about what it takes to actually keep the carrier running was equally impressive.

Share some “words to live by” or your favorite quote. “All that needs to happen for evil to prevail is that good men do nothing”. Martin Luther King

What would you be doing if you were not in your profession today? I would love to be a college professor teaching history. Ideally it would be in a western state where I could fly fish between

classes.

Where do you see yourself in ten years? See above….teaching college history in a western state and fly fishing between classes.

Toledo Rotary Club Foundation Chairman Tom Backoff thanked Mark Makulinski for all of his Foundation philanthropy, specifically the $66,376 donation to the Foundation as a result of Club member donations, each dollar matched by Mark. PP Tom presented a case of Rotary International Foundation’s 100th Anniversary Wine. In addition, Mark bet Tom that the Foundation wouldn’t raise the full $100,000. Tom gladly took the bet and paid up on Monday with a “tasteful” holiday tie for Mark. To date, 68% of Club members have given $115,839 this Rotary year versus $78,145 from the 2014-2105 Rotary year (a 48% increase!) which will be used to grow the corpus which in turn will allow for more grants to be presented to nonprofits. The Toledo Rotary Club Foundation’s goal is 100% member participation before June 30, 2016. You can donate here.
