LEHIGH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL When Lightning Strikes....... Thunder Rolls! Dear Lehigh Lightning Family, The 2019-2020 school year is right around the corner! This year will be jam packed with excitement and unforgettable memories! Our commitment is to make sure LSHS is a place where students strive to reach their highest academic potential as scholars and where school spirit is contagious! Enclosed in this newsletter you will find very important information. Please take the time to read through it so that you are aware of important details you need to know. A few key points: Back to School Open House is Thursday, August 8 th from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Student Dress Code is provided and it will be required that student scholars adhere to it. Please make sure you read through it and send your student scholar to school dressed for success. Students that do not follow the dress code are subject to spending the entire day in Internal Suspension. This begins the first day of school. One Binder with eight tabs will be required for our student scholars. This is a strategy we use school-wide to help keep our student scholars organized. Make sure it is a 3 inch binder. Binders will be for sale with all necessary schools supplies at Open House for just $10 in the cafeteria. PE Uniforms will be required for PE/CrossFit. They are $20 and will be available for purchase at Open House in the cafeteria. Attendance truly effects a student’s success. Please see the “Lehigh Scholars Success Plan” enclosed in this newsletter. Excessive absenteeism and tardies will effect a student’s opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities and may result in a 3 hour after hours school on Wednesdays. Students will have the same Administrator for all 4 years at LSHS! We want to work as a team to help our student scholars succeed! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. We are in this together! Students will have the same Guidance Counselor for all 4 years at LSHS! It is our goal to make sure that we get to know our families and work with students to develop post high school plans. Everyone will have a “plan” when they walk across our graduation stage. Our Guidance Counselor assignments are as follows: Jackie Plucker A-Ca [email protected] Saneik Buchanan Ce-F [email protected] Sara Komosinski G-Ji [email protected] Claire Forester Jo-Me [email protected] Chelsey Funderburg Mi-Q [email protected] Bonnie Mazza R-Sn [email protected] Leslie Naylor So-Z [email protected] We have a busy year ahead of us! Our AICE Cambridge program is continuing to grow and our students are engaged in very rigorous studies. We have many exciting events planned for our Center for the Arts Programs. We are most proud that our campus will be open for “teaching and learning” as we continue our journey as an AVID National Demonstration School! Academic Excellence and Rigor is truly a priority for our students and I am very proud to have such a committed staff on board to make this happen. I encourage students to get involved in something to make their high school experience one that is engaging and memorable. Parents, it is so important that you remain actively involved in your child’s educational progress. We need to work as partners in helping your son or daughter achieve their highest academic potential. Your son/daughter may not always admit it, but they want and need your support and encouragement more than ever. You can assist with monitoring academic progress by reviewing the FOCUS Parent Portal frequently. You can also have a voice inside the school by attending the School Advisory Council meetings and by becoming an active volunteer. We also hope to see you at a variety of our programs, whether that be academic, sports and/or arts events. You are always welcome on campus and your presence DOES make a difference! The Impact of Tardiness on SchoolSchools stress the need for students to get to school and class on time and

with good reason. Studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Education on truancy, which is connected with tardiness, show that school attendance is a major factor when it comes to school success and student behavior.

Problems with Tardiness:The most crucial learning hours of a school day are the morning hours,

because they are when students are most attentive. Students who are tardy miss the beginning of their morning classes, and they also cause a distraction when arriving late.

Academics and Achievement:Students who are frequently tardy have lower GPA’s, lower scores on

standardized assessments, and lower graduation rates. Chronic tardiness in elementary and middle school is also linked to failure in high school.

Behavior Problems:In the National Center for Education Statistics Indicators of School Crime

and Safety, teachers surveyed reported that students who are frequently tardy have higher rates of suspension and other disciplinary measures. Tardiness causes students to feel disconnected with school, leading to behavior problems and dropouts. Students who are frequently tardy to school are also more apt to be fired from a job for showing up late.

Effect on Others:When students are tardy, they negatively impact their teachers and other

students. Teachers are often required to allow tardy students to make up work, which often requires them to restructure their lessons or reteach missed material. Tardiness also takes other students’ attention away from a teacher’s lesson, leading to more behavior problems and missed instruction.

Early Sign-outs Can Send the Same Message:Although it may not seem like a big issue to sign your student out early

to avoid the pick-up line, it causes a disruption in the busy afternoon office, interrupts the child’s classroom, takes away from the flow of your child’s day, and it unfair to other parents who follow procedures.
