Hirouki Usui, who joined Omron Europe as Chie Executive Ocer in April this ear, sas his ambition is

to bring next generation technolog into the European market, putting Omrons know-how, experience and sstems

within reach o European machine-builders. We spoke with him about his vision and ideas

    or achieving these ambitions.

Wha did yu ask yusel when yu becae CEo?

M main interest is in helping European machine-builders to sta

strong in a changing world, because ever customer I have spoken

to sees the challenges ahead. We must help them to keep innovat-

ing and reducing costs. That wa the can seize the opportunities in

developing markets like China where our long-standing presence is

going to help them while deending their local business.

Hw can nex-geneain echnlgy help achine-buildes?

It all springs rom the ideas o the machine-builders them-selves.Ssmac, or example, was based on customer demands or a platorm

thats scalable and exible, and that enables the creation o ast, e-

cient machines. Our vision is to help our customers engineers to turn

their ideas into realit the smart wa.

Culd yu explain wha yu ean by uning

ideas saly in ealiy he sa way?

Machine automation is all about input-logic-output technolog

so we make connectivit as simple, ast and reliable as possible.

Machine-builders onl need to ocus on the creative idea, mixing and

matching components without worring about hierarch or othercommunication issues. Were unique in oering this seamless input

logic- output combinations. O course, i everthing comes rom

Omron it will be the astest combination available on the market.

Wha ae ons he cus pins?

We aim to provide the most reliable support in the business, and

deliver it aster and more precisel than anone else. We can do this

b removing all unnecessar waste, taking out elements that dont

add value or our customers and their customers. As a logical conse-

quence, this will improve the speed o our response and bring the

cost down - these are all benefts that can be directl transerred to

our customers and help make them more competitive.

I yu wee an on cuse penial cuse, hwwuld yu ineac wih us?

Its an interesting question, because we must alwas think rom the

customers perspective. The frst point is to realize how eas it is to

get access to our automation expertise. On ever level, Omron is

the most open automation partner in Europe. I I were a customer I

would defnitel bring Omron in at the start o a project, right at the

concept stage, because I know our engineers can help customers

to create solutions to specifc challenges. The are in the feld ever

da in all kinds o industries. So, or example, know-how gained on

an automotive plant in Sweden might be exactl whats needed or a

packaging machine in France. Machine-builders can use this experi-ence to sharpen their ideas or tomorrows machines: it will help to

make equipment thats uture-proo, and that delivers the competi-

tive advantage in todas globalized world.

Flexibilit and versatilit are the two main drivers or the

evolution o packaging machiner. In particular, the need to change

ormats quickl, or to handle dierent products on the same line, has

led more innovative manuacturers to develop new solutions in terms

o machiner laout, materials and technologies.

Italian manuacturer Mespic is just such a compan. Specia-lizing

in the design and construction o integrated end-o-line packaging

machiner, Mespic looked at what the market was demanding, and

established partnerships with specialist suppliers to meet those de-

mands. In particular, it has investigated new materials and innovative

technologies that enable it to oer solutions that are more ecient in

terms o productivit and energ saving.

S, pack, bx, cde: he end--he-line ea

One o Mespics most recent advances is the development o an end-

o-line secondar and fnal packaging solution or packs o tea. This is

a dedicated line which incorporates transport o the packs, aggregat-

ing dierent product tpes and ormats, and automaticall placing

    them in dierent packing cases.

The ke issue is that the packs containing dierent avours o tea

each coming rom a dierent production line must be properl

and accuratel placed into separate cases or despatch. So when

the dierent teas arrive at the Mespic end-o-line plant, the are frst

scanned b an Omron FQ vision sstem, which identifes the dierent

product tpes. The data is sent via an Ethernet link to the pick-and-

place sstem, which takes the packs o tea and puts them into dier-ent cases. The open cases are frst marked with a Data Matrix code,

and then automaticall sealed: fnall, a second Omron FQ-CR vision

sstem reads the code printed on the case, to identi the contents

    and ensure accurate despatch.

Developed in collaboration with Omron, the end-o-line plant

benefts rom the know-how and product philosophies o both

companies. One o Mespics core strengths is its abilit to oer not

onl standalone machines but also complete lines. These all-in-one

sstems, born out o the need to run multiple processes within the

same area, are designed in co-operation with the customer to take

into account the specifc packaging and the space limitations. The

Mespic machines make use o innovative materials such as carbon

fbre and have ewer moving parts. This makes them lighter, which in

turn enables the use o smaller motors to reduce component costs as

well as saving energ up to 60% compared with traditional machines.

Mespic, with headquarters in northeast Italy, has worked with Omron to develop

innovative all-in-one packaging solutions that end-users now demand, and that

successul machine makers strive to provide. A recent example is this end-o-line

plant or secondary and fnal packaging o tea.

Mespic has ound an ideal partner in Omron, which shares its

customer-ocused ideals. Francesca Gaetani, Packaging Project Leader

at Omron Electronics Ital, explains that Our automation philosoph

was to provide a solution based on the new NJ controller on an Ether-CAT network. This architecture allows us to take a unique approach in

meeting diering requirements in terms o complexit, while ensur-

ing cost saving. We achieved this because the NJ machine controller -

scaled in dierent sizes - handles the logic I/O as well as the machine

movements. The EtherCAT network - on which the entire Ssmac

platorm is based provides the speed o data exchange necessar to

    ensure application exibilit.

In the case o the tea-packaging solution, the NJ501 machine control-

ler manages the conveors carring the packs o tea, as well as servo

drives that operate the casing machine, the pick-and-place module,

and the aggregation o the dierent packs. Mespics case-packing

sstems are all top-loading, and use a Cartesian-axis gantr with both

motors fxed, to reduce weight and thereore wear - on the moving

    parts.

Extensive and continuous collaboration rom Omron has provided

the exibilit and versatilit with which Mespic has been able to meet

the specifc and complex needs o each customer. The technologhas delivered several customer benefts, including:

To assure the required perormance level, Omron developed

a new inter-connection bus, which outperorms an currentl

available industrial network. Besides having a high data

transer rate, this bus will propagate the distributed clock o

EtherCAT down to individual I/O units. The distributed clock

    tionall,

input units with timestamp unction can be used to accuratel

One o the benefts o advanced Saet Controllers

compared with classic hard-wired saet solutions is

the exibilit and reusabilit o code. Omron NX Saet

Controllers are programmed according to the IEC 61131-3

standard and use the same Ssmac Studio Integrated

Development Environment (IDE) used or the rest o the

    Ssmac devices.

Standards like IEC 61131-3 and PLCopen bring openness

and usabilit that ensures end users can avoid becoming

the prisoner o a particular brand. NX Saet Controllers

incorporate PLCopen Function Blocks (FBs) that in

combination with Motion Control FBs make Ssmac one

o the most open platorms on the market. Furthermore,

Ssmac Studio allows the integration o NX Saet

Controller variables within the global variables o an NJ

controller. Ssmac Studio IDE thus supports a common

methodolog or hardware defnition, programming and

    maintenance.

opeaing Pinciple he NX Saey Cnlle

The NX Saet Controller supports sae logic in its local

NX backplane and in remote NX remote backplanes

b means o the NX EtherCAT coupler (NX-ECC201).

Functional Saet Over EtherCAT (FSoE) uses the so-called

black channel or communications which allows saet

data and non-saet data to be combined without risk

in a single network. FSoE can achieve SIL-3, with the

probabilit o one undetected error exceeding 100,000

    ears!

Ssmac NJ Controller is the EtherCAT network master.

The NX Saet Controller establishes a connection-ID

mechanism with its associated NX devices. In this wa,

the NX Saet Controller manages the sae logic while the

NJ EtherCAT Master is responsible or sae and non-sae

communications. One interesting consequence is that

NJ Controller has continuous access to the FSoE data

and can, i necessar, use this in standard automation

    processes.

into Ssmac Studio simplifes sstem design, setup and

maintenance, allowing machine builders to ocus on the

improvement o perormance and saet rather than on

sstem confguration. The combination o NX-Saet and

Omron saet components - rom saet switches and

sensors to motion devices with integrated saet unc-

tions brings great benefts to machine builders looking

    or a single source solution.

Ssmac NX Saet Controller series in combination with

new NX I/O sstem and Ssmac NJ Controllers contribute

to increased machine saet and improved productivit

over the total machine lieccle. Omron is a global

One stop solution supplier who can oer not onl

components, but also solutions and services like Input-

Logic-Output or unctional saet in automation.

Denis Oerther, in charge o the Purchasing Department at

Mecapack, sees obvious benefts in optimizing line control:

A single platform reduces the number of components

and the wiring and programming times in the workshops.

It also reduces stock volumes, and the variety of spareparts needed.

Mecapack, a specialist manuacturer o primar and secondar packaging machines

has recentl developed a turnke packaging line. Working in close cooperation with

Omron has enabled the compan to base its concept on a single line controller,

a strategicall important step orward, with which Mecapack intends to satis

customer expectations both in its French home market and in the rest o the world.

or Development at Mecapack. But the also want to build a relati-

onship with a single Project Manager who can oer a global solution

or both primar and secondar packaging. This is what we have

been working to establish or the past fve ears.

Crille Couloigner, in charge o Mecapacks Automation Research

    Department, adds:

We have developed from being a manufacturer of individual ma-

chines towards becoming a supplier of engineering solutions. We owe

this evolution directly to the development of Omron technology.Benot Mort explains that Mecapack has been working continuall

on the reliabilit and operation o a global ull-line concept, while

integrating third-part products such as metal detection sstems andlabelling machines: Were introducing into packaging lines notions

o production ecienc which are well known in the automotive in-

dustr, while reducing product-ormat changeovers to the minimum.

    Indusialized develpen

As part o this project, one o Mecapacks objectives is to streamline

machine conception, which will reduce deliver times - among other

benefts. To achieve this, the compan is deploing Omrons Ssmac

platorm, which puts the entire line under the same logic o control

and parameter setting. Man o our customers are in avour o this

rationalization, sas Serge Pitois, Product Manager at Mecapack,

although he notes that A single controller means a complete change

    in strateg.

Benot Mort adds that This is where the Omron team add their

expertise to our knowledge, and answer an queries that might arise

on our side. Our partnership with Omron allows us to achieve the

perormance levels that we had initiall set as an objective, which is

important with new technologies. you could look at this as a jointinvestment b Omron and Mecapack, and I do want to emphasise the

act that the Omron team is alwas ver reactive when we need help!

80 % o Mecapacks customers are in the ood and beverage sector, but the compan also manuactu-

res machines or the pharmaceutical, medical, and suppl chain (secondar packaging) sectors. Larger

ood manuacturers and large or medium size supermarkets will also turn more and more to primar

packaging. One third o Mecapacks turnover presentl comes rom France, but there is a strong desire

to develop the compans global activities, a strateg which can be supported b Omrons extensiveinternational network.

According to Serge Pitois, deploing a single controller such as the Ssmac platorm is the onl wa

to create a complete packaging line which can meet expectations in terms o perormance, and o

return on investment and costs. Mecapack integrates a sequence o automation products and Delta-2

robots developed internall, with motors and control b Omron - that ft into the single line-controller

concept. Ethernet connectivit means the controller can also communicate with the multi-articulated

robots used in the case-packing stage.

This consistenc in the sequential unctions and motion control is much appreciated because it allows

shorter ormat changeover times. It also allows remote maintenance and diagnosis o the complete line

through a single communication entr point. These are signifcant benefts or both the end user and

    Mecapack.
