MAY EDITORIAL

Front Cover PictureYou will surely have to forgive us the indulgence in our front cover page, an excellentphoto from David Pye, but it works so wonderfully well not only with the time of yearbut also with the delightful anecdote from Susan Bunn, one of our editors, regardingher perceptive observation of nesting pigeons. Please take the time to read herarticle.

Beer FestivalYour editor recently attended a Beer Festival at Aylsham organised by Aylsham RoundTable. Whilst I was there only in an observational editorial capacity (oh yeah!!), itwas difficult not to enjoy the convivial atmosphere and the excellent variety andquality of the refreshment! It is reported that over the last three years the AylshamRound Table members have donated over £10,000 from the proceeds of the Festivalto good causes. Can we have a Beer Festival in Coltishal l or Horstead, please?

GNS

The Coltishall Good Neighbours Scheme continues to go from strength to strengthwith a new volunteer, Carl Tipple, and an increase in calls (confirming the need forsuch a service).A recent call which seemed like a simple request for a li ft to the Post Office, turnedinto a far more demanding issue when the person requesting the lift , having hearingdifficulties, was struggling to deal with his bank by telephone as regards pin numbersand passwords. Long gone are the days when banks knew their customers and yourManager would be able to deal with problems such as this himself or allocatesomebody at your bank to do it! The problem was eventually resolved with the helpof the GNS and the Coltishall Post Office and the recipient was able to withdraw hiscash. This did highlight one of the problems of the hard of hearing and alerted GNS to lookinto the options for assistance. If you are already personally or for others dealingwith issues such as the hard of hearing and have any experiences or information thatyou are able to share with GNS to make their work easier then please call Julie on01603 737637.The Norfolk Deaf Association have informed us that they have a mobile clinic, “thelisten here”, that will visi t Hoveton Vi llage Hall on Tuesday 14 th May from 1-3pm (anddoes so every two months). They wil l check your hearing aids, replace batteries andgive advice generally about hearing difficulties. No appointment is necessary, justturn up!

Movie Trivia Quiz

Your lack of response to this has been noted and the quiz in the May issue will be thelast.

The Jubilee Players are presenting Calendar Girls on 26th , 27th , 28 th and 29th June2013. As the days fall away before the production we hope to bring you confirmationthat the dress rehearsals (have I got that right?) have gone well and the iced bunsare in production!

Notes from Horstead ParishCouncil – April

AccountsThe parish council has an end of yearoutturn figure of £18,194.79, of which£12,000 is earmarked for the Playing Field(Including a grant from the Poor’s LandTrust to replace a broken piece ofapparatus). This leaves us with £6,194.79of which £6,302.00 is unspent NewHomes Bonus. This sum is earmarked fornew notice boards and has also been usedas our contribution to the trod footpath inMill Road. The Notice Boards will cost us£3,857.08 ex VAT and the new climbingapparatus £2,045.00. Thus we have inhandThus, despite what seems to be a heal thyfigure, it looks that money is fairly tight atthe moment. There is more work to bedone to the remaining fabric of the Millwhich wil l doubtless take up most of theincreased precept this year.

Horstead MillWork to the trees has now beencompleted. Whist it always seems a pity tohave to fell mature trees, these werediagnosed by our consultantarboriculturalist as being diseased andpotentially hazardous both to visitors andpassing traffic. Now the parish council’sattention has to turn to the remaining Millstructures. A preliminary visual survey hasshown that some of the walls needrepointing and stabilising and that thereare cracks in the concrete under thebridge over the sluices. Therefore a moredetailed survey is needed and a remedialprogramme undertaken.

The Playing FieldThe main gate is now sorted, but the

problem closing the pedestrian gate looksto be insoluble. The trouble is that there isno return spring that is going to be 100%reliable, particularly after little (and not solittle) fingers have been interfering with it.It has also been exacerbated by the factthat the gate has been hung the wrongway round, not entirely the fault of ourcontractors as the previous one was andin the absence of instructions to thecontrary, they followed the same pattern. It is great to be wise after the event. The apparatus is still awaited, but onenquiry the parish council was told thatthe waiting time was still about six weeks, due to their being busy with schoolplaying fields, delayed by the bad weather, etc. Hopefully it will be in place by thetime the next edi tion of The Marlpit comesalong.

Grade II Listed Buildings at RiskEnglish Heritage and Broadland DistrictCounci l already maintain a register ofGrade I and II* listed buildings at Riskand now want to compile a similar registerfor Grade II Buildings. Since the vastmajority of listed bui ldings are Grade II,this would be a massive task withoutvolunteer help, which is why your parishclerk went to a meeting last Saturday atThorpe Lodge to be trained to help withthe survey. The first step is to eliminatethose Grade II buildings which are not atrisk, although hopefully that does notinclude any from Horstead, most of whichappear to be in an excellent state ofrepair. If you want to find out more aboutthis pilot scheme, go to www.english-heritage.org.uk/about/news/gradeIIbuildings-at-risk/

Development Options in the GrowthTriangleJust to remind you that there is still timeto make a comment on the bui lding ofnew homes, businesses and faci lities inthe Old Catton, Rackheath Sprowston andThorpe St Andrew (ORST) Growthtriangle. Broadland District Council hasproduced a consultation document called

the Area Action Plan (AAP) OptionsConsultation Draft. This document setsout a series of issues and options fordevelopment in this area over the next 15years and beyond.During the consultation period Broadlandwill be running a series of drop-insurgeries and workshops to discuss thedevelopment options. It goes to say thatthe status quo is not an option. Moreinformation can be found atwww.broadland.gov.uk/aap . A copy of thedocument will be available for view at theAnnual Parish Meeting.

Do you want to Help YourCommunity?Your parish needs you! At present wehave two vacancies on the parish council. No special qualifications are needed, apartfrom being over 18, resident or workingwithin or near the parish boundary, justthe willingness to turn up on the secondWednesday of the month to the PCmeeting and to spend a little time inbetween reading information sent to youby the Clerk. Free training is available. Formore information please contact theparish clerk.

Annual Parish MeetingContrary to popular belief, this is not aparish council meeting but the chance foryou, the electorate, to find out moreabout what the parish council does and todiscuss your concerns with them and withother parishioners. We are hoping for thefirst time to have an outside speaker aswell , and as this is the Norfolk ScamAwareness Year we have invited NorfolkTrading Standards to come and tell usabout how to avoid being taken for anexpensive ride and how to help relatives, friends or neighbours who might havebeen caught out. Notes

You know by now that one of Eco-Warrior’s biggest bug-bears isthe ubiquitous, harmful and totally unnecessary plastic bag. So,it’s “well done to Northern Ireland”! for introducing a levy of 5pon plastic bags in its supermarkets! This is following the example of Wales, who started charging forplastic bags last September and who have already seen areduction in use by 22%.Scotland is also considering a levy.Yet dear old England – who’s government wanted to be “thegreenest ever” – is not even contemplating it.We can congratulate ourselves a bit, in that we only used 8BILLION placcy bags in 2011! That’s down from 12 billion in2006. If you’re having trouble imagining what 8 billion plasticbags look like, well, apparent ly they would fill 200 Olympic

swimming pools . No wonder then, that as they all go tolandfill and hang about unchanged for over 1000years, they’restarting to turn up all over the place – on roadside verges, in thetrees, blocking drains, on beaches, and now, inside over amillion birds and marine creatures. It’s probably getting into ourfood by now. Isn’t it NASTY!So, Eco-Warrior wants DEFRA to do what Wales, N. Ireland andsoon Scotland are doing and make some attempt to DOSOMETHING about ALL THIS PLASTIC!

Subject: Wind turbines.I am becoming most concerned with yourcoverage of the possible erection of windturbines around the Scottow estate, itseems that your local paper is very muchagainst these turbines, I would havethought that you would be neutral onsuch things, giving a balanced view fromboth for and against? I only see "against"printed?I live on the Ling Way estate, and I cansee no real reason why theseconstructions can't be put in place, wehave lived in the shadow of a RAF site formany years and put up with jets flyingaround, two wind turbines would benothing in comparison, your article onpage 9 of the Apri l Marlpit says thattourism may well be affected, are you

really saying that people wi ll be put ofvisiting th is part of the world because oftwo turbines as opposed to a sexoffenders prison? What's nicer? A view of a majestic windturbine in the distance or the securitylights of a sex offender’s prison? As yourdrive into Cornwall you drive past amassive wind farm, has this had adetrimental effect on tourism onCornwall? No.Your article also says that aviation safetymay also be affected, "There is alsoanecdotal evidence suggesting that pilotssometimes mis judge altitude (by reasonsof inaccurate equipment or human error)which would further increase the riskfactor”? Is this just clutching at straws?Basically you are saying that sometimespilots make mistakes and sometimesequipment fails, this is true, but also trueis that this can happen at any time, anywhere.Wildlife affected? Yes I believe it mightbe, if I build a house or plough a fieldwildlife will be affected, if we as acountry build a string of nuclear powerstations I have no doubt that wildlife insome way or another will be affected, yetwe still eventually will.

There are many arguments for andagainst wind turbines and everyoneshould be free to express their view, it isin my opinion that we have yet anothercase of NIMBY (not in my back yard). As our ever increasing appetite for powergrows and our reliance on all thingselectric increases it does seem that ahappy balance must be reached, windturbines should not be dotted across thecountry with no thought of the impactbut also they should not be stopped frombeing installed on hollow, NIMBYarguments.

Yours faithfullyJ Spink.[by email]

The Marlpit does not have to beneutral on these issues but we dotry to represent all views within themagazine.

Coltishall newsletter – AprilStrong interest in former RAF site

We are encouraged by the level of interest being shown from anumber of parties since we bought the former RAF Coltishall sitefor £4m from the Ministry of Justice in January this year.

We continue to receive suggestions from local residents aboutpossible uses. We have also received a number of enquiries frombusinesses – some local and some from outside the area. There isparticular interest from engineering and manufacturing companiesand as proposals are developed we will consider each on theirmerits and take them through the normal planning procedures asappropriate.

Heritage of the former RAF Coltishall site to be furtherexamined

We have always said from the day we expressed an interest in thesite that maintaining its heritage was vital. Therefore, we arepleased to report that the UEA have secured a grant of £52,000 tocarry out research aimed at improving people’s understanding ofthe social and cultural impact of the Cold War.

RAF Coltishal l played a significant role during this period betweenthe mid 1940s to the early 1990s and the year-long project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), willsee experts from Norfolk County Council, the UEA, and otherpartners work together and engage with local communities tomake the Cold War in Norfolk more accessible.

In addition to this research we have received a number ofrequests from people from the heritage sector wanting to visit theformer base and/or photograph particular heritage assets relatingto their own areas of aviation history research. Some supervisedvisits have already taken place so that these interested specialistinterest groups could see first hand the rich heritage that exists.

We are also about to do some positive management of thedesignated World War Two fighter pen including clearance of scruband ivy and treatment to prevent re-growth.

We continue to work towards making as much heritageinformation as possible accessible online via our websitewww.heritage.norfolk.gov.uk and two reports on the site’sheritage have recently been added to our website atwww.norfolk.gov.uk/RAFColtishal l

Open Day on the horizon

Preparations are underway for opening up the site to the people ofBadersfield, who live closest to the site. On Saturday 25th Maywe will be holding an Open Day so that people can see what thesite has to offer. Between 10am and 4pm we plan to have bustours taking people around the site to see the main areas ofinterest and there will be archive footage of the former base beingshown in one of the hangars. In addition, there wil l be anopportunity for local residents to tell their personal stories aboutthe site as well as present any ideas they have for the future ofthe former base.

We will be writing to 400 households in early May to invite them tothe Open Day and provide more information on how to book aplace on one of the scheduled tour buses which will be on a firstcome first served basis.

The finer detail

Work continues on the Master Plan which includes potential usesof the site as well as other matters such as traffic considerations, access routes, heritage proposal and ecology surveys.

The Master Plan is being developed in accordance with the LocalDevelopment Frameworks of North Norfolk District Council andBroadland District Council.

We have been engaging wi th the Community Liaison ReferenceGroup (CRLG), local partners and key stakeholders and feedbackwill help to develop the Master Plan. A full list of potential useswhich have been suggested to the County Council have beengiven to the Community Liaison Reference Group. The uses havebeen grouped into those that will be taken forward into the MasterPlanning work because they have the potential, with further work,to be deliverable within the context of the former RAF base, andthose that are unlikely to be taken forward because they are eithercontrary to the Zonal Plan or currently viewed as undeliverable.

It has been agreed that an initial draft version will be presented atthe next CRLG meeting which is likely to be held in May. It is verymuch hoped that the final Master Plan, which will be agreed bythe Member Steering Group and the Environment, Transport andDevelopment Overview and Scrutiny Panel, will then be adopted inthe autumn this year.

How do I stay informed about the site’s progress?

There will be further opportunities for the public to comment aswell as interested businesses to come forward with their ideas atevents held during 2013. This includes an opportunity forcomment at the May Open Day.

We will continue to provide information via the local media andnewsletters, but for the most up to date situation visit our websitewww.norfolk.gov.uk/RAFColtishal l

meets on the last Wednesday of the month atthe Masonic Hall in Wroxham commencing atnoon. At the March meeting we had a presentation by Robert Eastonon the subject of Easton Tours. Robert told us that theCompany was founded in 1953 and were initially rat catchersand then bakers in Cawston before becoming a taxi service. They took on contract work transporting shift workers forBernard Mathews and also school contracts. In 1977 they formed Easton Holidays and took over a numberof coach companies, one of which gave them their Ber Streetaddress. The Company is now run by Robert who looks afteroperations and his brother Derek who is responsible formaintenance. The Company carry out all maintenance work inhouse, with the exception of spray painting. The first coach that the Companypurchased and which they still own,was a 1952 Albion. It has a top speedof 42mph and is used for weddings andspecial excursions. The latest coachesare tri-axle and this configuration givesextra leg room and a more comfortableride. They are built in Holland and areof modular construction with the front, rear and roof madeseparately and then joined to the floor. In the event of anaccident the front can be changed within 24 hours. These airconditioned coaches cost in the region of £300k and hold 700litres of fuel – enough to tour Cornwal l and back at aconsumption rate of 9 to 10 mpg.Easton holidays now concentrate on holidays, excursions andprivate hire. Apart from the variety and quality of the holidaysand tours, customers are attracted by the fact that there areno hidden extras; all drivers are CPR checked, undergo 5 yearsof training and are competent at providing first aid. For allholidays of 5 days and over, the Company provide home pick-up to their depot in Stratton. The Company prides itself on selecting top quality hotels fortheir holidays many of which are 4 star. Weekly crime summary

15-22 March 2013

Overview from Broadland and NorthNorfolk Policing CommanderIt’s hard to believe apparently Spring ishere. For us that means looking at thetypes of crime and anti social behaviourthat change with the seasons and havingplans in place to counter them. Each of thesafer neighbourhood teams in Broadlandand North Norfolk has a seasonallyadjusted plan that focuses resources wherewe need to be and when we need to bethere.Hence in the run up to Easter we will beincreasing our attention around thefts ofgardening equipment from sheds andallotments, checking on vulnerable victimsand locations which have previously beentargeted at this time of year, and as weapproach the Easter weekend putting inadditional patrols around the towns andpubs and knocking on the doors of thosethat need a reminder to behave over theBank Holiday. On a personal note I will be moving toKings Lynn and West Norfolk at Easter tobe replaced by Supt Stuart Gunn. I’veknown Stuart for many years and he is areally experienced and knowledgeable cop,so I’m pleased to be able to hand over tosomebody I know wil l do a good job ofkeeping North Norfolk and Broadland reallysafe places to live, work and visit. Thanksfor all your support.Superintendent Carl Edwards

Rotary Club of BroadlandsAnnual Celebration of the Forma tion of the Rotary Club of Broadlands

Members and Guests recently celebrated the 39th

Anniversary of the formation of the Club in 1973.

A social event was held at The Old Rectory Hotel in Crostwick atwhich we were entertained by Wing Commander (Rtd.) Ken Wallis. Many

people remember Ken Wallis for his adventures with his famous Autogyros andhis involvement in the James Bond film “ You only live twice”. He spoke abouthis life and passionate interest in al l things mechanical from motorcycles, cars, powerboats to aircraft of various types. Not only building, but driving, sai ling

and flying the various machines. He also designed miniature pistols and cameras used during his period of wartime service in the RAF.All this in the days long before the sophisticated equipment in use today. A truly remarkable gentleman. We have interesting speakersat most of our weekly club meetings so if you would like to get involved in the local community, and also make new friends, why nothave a look at our new website at www.rotaryclubofbroadlands.org.uk or ring Richard Mayer on 01603 715796.

Cold Caller AdvicePolice are reminding peopleacross the county to exercisecaution with doorstep sellers, followingreports from concerned residents aboutpossible rogue traders.Inspector Brian Sweeney said:

"We have been contacted by people inBroadland and South Norfolk areas, aswell as receiving similar reports fromother parts of Norfolk, worried about aperson calling selling power tools andsmall plant items.Whilst there are legitimate door-to-doortraders, some do operate illegally and wewould always encourage people to becautious and make checks before agreeing

to buy something from a cold caller. If i tsounds too good to be true then itprobably is - goods can be faulty or ofpoor quality and overpriced."Doorstep sellers should provide writtencontact details and written quotes, and bylaw you have a seven day cool ing offperiod so you can change your mindabout any service offered by someonewho arrives uninvited or by appointment.Insp Sweeney continued:"Keep your property secure at both thefront and back and only answer the doorto people you are happy to speak to.Safer Neighbourhood Teams have no coldcalling stickers you can display on yourdoor. If you are concerned about a coldcaller, send them away and call the police. We work with our partners at TradingStandards to deal with rogue traders who

take advantage of vulnerable members ofour community, and take action whereany offences are being committed."

Anyone who is concerned about a coldcaller or has information on rogue tradersshould contact their local SaferNeighbourhood Team or OperationRADAR, a special ist police team whichtackles doorstep crime, on 101. Alwaysdial 999 if a crime is in progress.Further information can be found byvisiting www.norfolk.police.uk and clickingon Safety Advice.

The Norfolk Keel. In reply to my article last month about the remains of The Norfolk Keel “DeeDar”, Margaret Bird, the authoress of The Mary Hardy Diaries, contacted us at The Marlpit and has very kindly sent uscopies of photographs of the remains of “Dee Dar”.The first group of 3 images show the timbers lying in a metal frame with its fittings and the transom standing.

The second group of 2 images shows the end of “Dee Dar”. Her remains are nothing more than a pile of ashes andmetalwork.

This final image is an 1829 engraving by J.H. Kernot a drawing by James Stark showing a Norfolk Keel sailingdownstream past Harrison's Wharf on the Wensum in Norwich, with the Carrow Boom Towers in the distance. She isladen with timber. Please note the shape of the transom compared to “Dee Dar’s” transom above.

In a commentary by Margaret Bird, Mary Hardy and her World (yet to be published), she will have a study of Keelsand Wherries in the final volume. The keel is a really fascinating subject, and Theole Douglas Sherwood's thesis onDee Dar and the keel generally is excellent. A copy is in the Norfolk Heritage Centre in Norwich.

In littlevillages suchas ours, theemployees of ourlocal shops aresynonymous withthe shopsthemselves. Weassociate the facesbehind thecounters alongwith thebusinesses. Overthe years, we bui ldrelationships withthem and an easy,

familiar exchange wil l take place. Our Coltishall Pharmacy has had just thatperson working there for the past sixteen years and she is Cath Cushion.Cath could always be relied upon to know where the products were, theirattributes and prices. She knew most customers by their first names and herlife intertwined with ours through many years. Cath had a wonderfulworking relationship with the local doctor surgeries and could always becounted on to sort out any problems arising. Her directness and discretionwere part of her everyday service. Friday, the 6th of April, was her last dayat the pharmacy as she is retired now. She enthusiastically is looking forwardto a new 'career' of intense gardening and new adventures!

Being born in Horsey and marrying a local man, she is a true Norfolk girl.Cath has lived in the village for the past twenty four years and with herhusband has four children and five grandchildren. Prior to working at thepharmacy, Cath ran the kitchen at the Rising Sun for eight years. Shewouldn't change a thing about the village and in fact, has very little interestin travelling. She prefers gardening and photography.

She would like to extend her thanks and gratitude to her customers for all oftheir many gifts and cards. Cath appreciates that they all took her on andkept her going through the years. Cath also wishes a big thank you to herboss, Dee Whyatt, Director of Pharma -z-Ltd., for her years of patience andgood humour. Dee says that she has been an exemplary employee and wi llbe very hard to replace. She thanks Cath for her dedication through theyears and dependability.

People tend to associatenest building with theseason of Spring, when in fact, itgoes on all through the Summer monthsalso. My huge Maple tree in the frontgarden was in full leaf and the weatherwas balmy and hazy, the morning I lookedout the bedroom window to see the noisyactivity in the tree. Nest building was infull swing yet again for a pair of WoodPigeons. The male was frantically bringingsticks of all sorts to the nesting site. Assoon as he flew off, she tossed theoffering down on the ground. Nothingseemed quite good enough. By afternoon, there was quite a pile of nesting materialunder the tree and poor Mr. Pigeon stillwasn't getting it right and was clearlyexhausted. Around tea time, Mrs. Pigeonplopped down on the ground and surveyedthe massive pi le of sticks, paced back andforth all around it and chose a stick, thefirst perfect stick. And so it went.

I didn't think much of the nest after thatday. It was mid summer , after all, and

other matters filled my head. Severalweeks later, a terrible din came from thetree. One of the pigeons was very, veryupset and it appeared the end of the worldwas happening. Immediately I thought,“cat” and ran out to inspect what wasgoing on. Nothing. Not a thing. Just avery agitated wood pigeon sitting on itsnest screaming desperately. We feed thebirds year round in our back garden andalso have a small water feature. I foundanother wood pigeon in the back gardenleisurely nibbling away, bathing in thewater feature and preening - not a care inthe world.

The whole picture came into focus then.Mr Wood Pigeon had relieved Mrs WoodPigeon of her nest duties. She was takingfull advantage of the break while hebecame more and more impatient andagitated. Right before dark, he waspacing on the tree branch and she wastopping up one more time from the feeder. He was near hysterics by then. Sheheaved a heavy sigh and flew back to the

nest. As soon as she was in sight, he wasoff like a rocket.

We humans pride ourselves to be thehighest species, capable of deep emotionsand very intricate building processes. Thatlittle soap opera that played out in mygarden that summer, proved to me that Ihad been narrow minded and missed thebigger picture.

There's a very plump Wood Pigeon in myback garden today. She is waddlingaround my hens' food. She's definitelyready to pop . . . . . . .

THE COLTISHALL &HORSTEAD YOUTH CLUBWILL CLOSE UNLESS....The Youth Club has been running since 2007and has proved to be very successful, withattendances ranging from 20 to 40 children in the age range of9 to 14 years. Each year we have been able to provide a FREEhalf day out during the Summer Break and a FREE Xmas Disco. This has been made possible from the weekly subscription fromeach child. There is also a Tuck shop which helps bolster thefunds.

HOWEVER, the Coltishall & Horstead Youth Club team havereached a stage where up to 6 of the adult volunteers havedecided that it is time for them to fully retire and take up otherinterests. That will leave only 5 adults to run the club whichthey are reluctant to do without additional help, this would alsomean that, given the number of helpers, weekly opening ofthe club would not be possible.

As it stands at themoment the club will

not re-open after Friday25th July

which is when the Schools start their summer break. If youbelieve in the club and the benefit it provides to your childrenplease come forward and save it. The general administrationand running of the club is not that difficult, and help andguidance would be available from existing helpers during thetransitional period

WROXHAM AND DISTRICT U3A(University of the Third Age)

We have made a very promising start, with 57 peopleshowing an interest in taking part, suggesting 52 different subjectsthey would like to pursue! At our first two meetings, our launchmeeting on 26th Februar y, and our inaugural meeting on 26th

Ma rch, we have collected names and contact details, heard fromour Regional Officer about the history and operation of U3A, andtried to get a few of the interest groups started. Our meeting on

23 rd April heard from Bob McKee about the “Mak ing of the CastleMall”, and made more progress in starting interest groups.

The next meeting will be our AGM on 21 st May , when we adoptour constitution, elect an Executive Committee, and become fullmembers of U3A with all its benefits like being able to tap into itsResources Centre. There will also be a speaker on RheumatoidArthritis (to be confirmed). This meeting will be in WroxhamChurch Hall at 2.30 pm, and we intend to establish a pattern forgeneral meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of every month (except Augustand December), so the following meetings will be on 18th Juneand 16 th July.

Subscriptions will be due on the date of the AGM, 21st May, whichwill be £15 p a. This includes £3.60 which goes to HQ, and £2.10for the U3A magazine several times a year. The rest will be neededfor hiring the hall for our general meetings, expenses of committeemembers, pay ing visiting speaker’s expenses etc. The feeling atour last meeting was that groups would contribute to their own hirefees (through the Treasurer) if they need to hire premises.

For those not familiar with U3A, it is a national organisation which isa learning cooperative which allows people no longer in full timeemployment to share many educational, creative and le isureactivities. No qualifications are required, and none are given. Someof the groups being formed in Wroxham are languages, art, books, walk ing, keep fit, trips to the theatre, music, DIY, local history toname a few. Anyone else interested is very welcome to come tothe general m eetings, or contact the Chairman, Corrie Mould 01603782755, or Secretar y Lynne Howard 01603 738835.

Wroxham FoodbankInvitation to an Open Meeting

If you were in cris is - where would youturn? Many of us have friends and family toturn to when the going gets tough. But whatif your family could no longer help and youhad nowhere else to go? What if the kidswere hungry, the cupboards bare and you’renot sure where the next meal is coming from?A sudden crisis such as an illness, familybreakup, death, benefit delay or redundancycan leave people unable to feed themselvesand their families. Such situations can quicklydeteriorate sometimes leading to relationshipbreakdown, housing loss, crime and healthproblems.

Norwich foodbank supports localindividuals and families who findthemselves on the edge of disaster through

the prov ision of emergency food supplies. These supplies take the form of nutritionallybalanced emergency foodboxes to cover anindividual or family’s basic needs for 72hours: the critical time gap before the SocialServices safety net “kicks in.”

We work closely with local careorganisations whose professional care-workers identify people in crisis and givethem a food voucher and refer them to one of

our Distribution Centres. Here they are givena warm welcome, a hot drink and a foodboxand if they wish, a listening ear and help infinding other professionals who can assistthem w ith the underlying problems that iscausing their crisis.

A new base in Wroxham?

Foodbank is looking at setting up adistribution centre in Wroxham, possibly atthe new United Reformed Church building, orat another community venue later this year.Grant Habershon from Norw ich Foodbank willbe coming to an Open Meeting hosted by theURC and St Helen’s Catholic Church onWednesday 1 May at St. Helen’s at 7pm .All are welcome to come and find out moreabout this project and how to get involved.

This is the time ofthe year whenmany people startto suffer fromseasonal allergicrhinitis – known as hayfever to all the sneezing,nose-blowing, eye-itchingcitizens who struggle withthis annual misery. Bowentreatment can make ahuge difference to theonset, duration andintensity of the body’sresponse to the allergensand histamines that triggerthis condition.

Hay fever, asthma, foodallergy and eczema are related allergic conditions and thetendency to develop them seems to run in families. The bodyproduces an antibody when it comes into contact with anallergen such as pollen. Antibodies are usually only released tofight infection, but in this instance the body believes the pollenor spore is harmful. This leads to certain cells in the body, especially those of the respiratory system, releasing chemicals. One of these is histamine, which triggers the allergic symptomsof hay fever . Hence, anti-histamines such as Piriton are takenby many people to try to control this.

Most Bowen therapists have a number of regular hayfever clients who book appointments as their time of usualonset approaches. Some, who start early with the tree pollens, will need to be seen as early as late January or early February. The latest arrivals will be booking in June for July/early Augusttrigger times.

Often, people discover the anti-hay fever properties of Bowentreatment by accident: they come for treatment for a bad backor tennis elbow, for instance, and then discover that theirbodies are not reacting as usual to the pollens that usual lytorment them – a welcome side effect. A similar thing oftenoccurs with skin conditions.

In Bowen Technique treatment a key part of the treatmentinvolves the draining of the lymphatic system hidden behind thesternocleidomastoid muscles on either side of the neck. WhenBowen is given, this part of the treatment often produces animmediate positive response to the sinus blockage. However, with the chronic cases, clearing this area can take a number oftreatments, which continue ounces per week or so until theblockage is clear . This can take 3 - 6 week, occasionally more.

If you suffer with this debilitating condition contact RosemaryBarber for a chat. Rosemary is a fully qualified Bowen Therapistregistered with the Bowen Therapists Professional Association.See Rosemary’s advert elsewhere in ‘The Marlpi t’ for a moneyoff voucher.

Rosemary can be contacted on 01603 721507 or 07818 438629or by email [email protected]

Work on the Barton House-Railway begun in1960 when the first straight sections of trackwere laid and the engine run after its rebuilding. Thecircular track was completed during 1962, and the railwayofficially opened by Mrs Howlings (grandmother of the writer)on Sunday April 28th , 1963. The first public running was heldin July of that year, and the first full season operated during1964. Until 1970, all money raised was in aid of WroxhamChurch Restoration Fund, a total of 600 having been reached. From 1971 all receipts have been in aid of charities. On EasterMonday 23rd April 1973, a 10th Anniversary Ceremony wasperformed by Mr. William Mervyn.

During 1979 the first section of the new 7¼ inch gaugeRiverside Railway was laid, from the riverside terminus to theWroxham Station near the signal box, 300 feet in length. OnEaster Monday 7th April 1980, the line was official ly opened byMr Paul Barnes of Anglia TV , after a short service of blessing byReverend Henry Stapleton.

During the winter of 1980/81 the line was extended by afurther 200 feet to a second riverside terminus. The newextension was officially opened by Michael Chapman of RadioNorfolk on Easter Sunday 19th April 1981, after a short serviceof blessing by Revd. Cedric Bradbury. In 1988 we celebratedour Silver Jubilee, with several special events taking placeduring the year, including an anniversary ceremony on Sunday21st August performed by Mr John Timson of Radio 4.

After the 1992 season the 3½" gauge line was ‘temporarily’closed for repair, and efforts were initially concentrated onimproving the Riverside Railway. Wroxham Station was rebuilt, enabl ing trains to pass in the station, Riverside East was givenan extra platform and signalled, and we commenced runningthe steam loco from 1998 onwards. And from 1999 a hugeamount of work was done on the 3½" line, enabling it us toreopen it as the Mid-land Railway at the start of the 2001Season. That year we also celebrated the centenary of theopening of Honing East Signal box on 23rd June 1901, withinvited guests including relatives of those who had worked thebox in M&GN/R days, former BHR signalmen and former staffand friends who helped move the box in 1967. We were alsoable to affix the superb Honing East name boards made byStan Gardner . In 2003 season we celebrated our 40th

Anniversary, with Helen McDermott, Paul Barnes, and RichardBower taking part in a ceremony on Sunday 20th April, andspecial events at runnings. In 2007 we had another Signal boxevent, celebrating its 40th Anniversary of being at the BHR. InAugust 2008 we celebrated the completion of therefurbishment of Dickerson's Diner, known as Project 4; as wellas much improved catering facilities it has given us storagespace for carriages (doubling as Santa's Grotto once a year), aroom that can be used for events for up to 50 people and anexcellent staff mess room complete with Stations Master'sOffice.

ISA’s – the options. With the new tax year upon us, this article takes a brief look at ISA’sand the different ways in which you can use your tax free allowance. The maximum that can be placed into ISA’s for the 2013/14 tax year isnow £11,520 per person.CASH ISA’s - for those who want no risk. You can place up to £5,760 ofyour total allowance into Cash ISA’s. Take care to understand the termsand conditions. Some offer higher interest rates. But in exchange, you mayhave less freedom of access to your money.CAPITAL PROTECTED ISA’s - for those who seek a better returnthan cash ISA’s but with the peace of mind that the initial sum invested willbe returned at the end of an agreed period of time. Up to the full £11,520can be invested. These are often referred to as Structured Products becauseof the fact that the terms of return are clearly stated at the outset. There are ahuge number of plans in this field. Some plans do carry the risk of capitalloss so be sure to take advice and ensure that you pick a plan that is rightfor you.DIRECT SHARE ACCOUNT ISA’s - You can buy shares in acompany (or companies) up to the £11,520 limit and hold these in an ISAaccount. The value of the share(s) will rise and fall and there will be noelement of capital protection. Be mindful of the possibility of loss and taketime to pick your holdings with care. This is perhaps the option that comes

with the highest risk. But if you pick well, your profit will befree of any Capital Gains Tax.COLLECTIVE STOCK MARKET ISA’s - these can be setup to deliver capital growth, regular income or a mixture of thetwo. They can receive your full £11,520 once again and do nothave any form of capital protection. Unlike Direct Share AccountISA’s, here you pass your money to a fund manager. They poolyour money with that of many other investors into “funds”which in turn spread the pool of money across a wide range ofholdings. This helps to reduce risk. Any one fund manager willoffer lots of different funds to suit the differing needs and riskstances of investors. For example, if a low risk minded investor isseeking income, we would usually search out funds that arefocussed upon the Fixed Interest Market of Gilts and CorporateBonds rather than those that make use of Shares. Interest rates ofup to 8% are currently available. Your investment value willinevitably rise and fall over time. This short article in no way should be taken by readers asadvice. Unless you feel at ease in making your own decisions, independent advice is always recommended. We have accessto plenty of information to help you make the right choices.Whatever option you take, it’s sensible to spend a little timegetting quality professional advice beforecommitting yourself.Martin Smith IFA can be contacted on 01263732720 or 07584 030071

‘Calendar Girls’ by Tim Firth

Our summer production will be ‘Calendar Girls’, based on the truestory about eleven Yorkshire WI ladies who posed nude for a calendar toraise funds for the Leukaemia Research Fund. The story was made into a film in 2003 and the stage play was first performed in 2008becoming the fastest sel ling play in British theatre history. The amateur rights to performthe play have been released for a period of time and we are pleased to be one of the groupstaking up this opportunity. As the play opens, and we meet the characters, we learn that Annie’s husband John hasbeen diagnosed with Leukaemia. After John’s death she and her best friend Chris want toraise money to buy a new settee for the waiting room at the hospi tal that treated John. They decide on the idea of an ‘alternative’ calendar and then have to persuade other WIladies to pose with them for it.The resulting play is full of emotions, extremely funny, sad and uplifting. So please come along to the Tithe Barn, Horstead.

Help us find these aliens in NorfolkHumans are increasingly moving species outside their natural range, sometimes deliberately and some- times accidentally. In theabsence of their natural enemies, some species can spread rapidly and cause problems. These species are termed “invasive”.Invasive non-native species are considered to be one of the most important causes of biodiversity loss worldwide, second only tohabitat destruction. They can also have significant economic impacts. In 2011, the total cost of invasive non-native species on theBritish economy was £1.7 Billion.

Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera)Description: An annual herb up to 2m in height with pink / purple, slipper shaped flowers, a fleshystem and explosive seed heads.Where to look: Prefers to grow in damp areas, and is particularlyabundant on river banks where it out-competes native vegetation. Why is it a problem? Fast growing, quickly becomes the dominant species in an area. Die back inwinter leaves river banks bare and susceptible to erosion.

Australian Swamp Stonecrop (Crassula helmsii)Description: Can be aquatic and terrestrial. Small round fleshy leaves arranged along the stem inopposite pairs. White flowers with small petals.Where to look: Found in a variety of habitats, have besubmerged, emergent and terrestrial forms. Why is it a problem? Forms dense impenetrable mats, can grow 200 times faster than native pondplants and can easily smother and out compete other species.

Floating pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides) Description: This aquatic plant hascharacteristic kidney shaped leaves which can be free floating or emergent. It has fleshy stems andfine, white roots.Where to look: Emergent or floating on the surface of still or slowly moving freshwater. Why is it a problem? With a peak growth rate of 20cm per day, floating pennywort can rapidlydominate a water body!

Killer shrimp (Dikerogammarus villosus)Description: Up to 30mm in length, body curled and semi-transparent, may have striped pattern. Two cone shape projections on its tail are key distinguishing features.Where to look: Likes to live within colonies of zebra mussels, on wood, concrete, gravel and rope.Attracted to man made structures. Why is it a problem? A voracious predator, it kills a range of native species, including young fish, mayfly and caddisfly larvae. Has the potential to seriously alter ecosystems it invades.

Please tell us if you find any of these invasive alien species.Records should contain information about: What you saw (photos are a great help); When you saw it; Where you saw it (a gridreference if possible); and Who you are. For more information and to submit your records online, go towww.norfolkbiodiversity.org/nonnativespecies Or you can send and email to [email protected], get in touch by phone01603 228977.

In theworld of politics the nation has beenremembering Margaret Thatcher.

Depending on where you were standing, she was a focus for unity, or a focus ofdiscontent. Archbishop Welby in his EasterSermon, warned that we should not expecttoo much from one individual leader-insirational they may be-but also falible. The Old Testament warns us not to putour trust in princes, but in God. Heproivdes a different focus of leadership.Jesus died(to some a failure-to believers avictory)rose and ascended into heavenbefore sending his Spirit to lead us fromwithin our hearts. After hisresurrection,Jesus ascended into heaven-and disapeared from sight. He gave a newfocus for us by -through the sending of hisHoly Spirit-by coming to live in you andme, and in all people and communitiesthat are wi lling to be led by his just andgentle rule.Christ's Spir it in us gathers, gives visionsof new ways of creative living and loving, and lifts our hearts and minds:
