    Things To Do in November

    The 1st Issuu

Love for adventure is something we never lose entirely. However, at some point inour lives we are convinced that it's time to 'grow up' and become 'responsible'.Everyone has to make a living, care for their work and family responsibilities, butall too often we forget the sense of wonder and love for adventure we felt aschildren. Every stream became a roaring river daring us to cross it, every rockbecame a mountain we needed to conquer, colours were brighter and food tastedmore delicious. Everything was meaningful and exciting. We'd like to help youremember those days, we'd like to get you off your sofa, out of the office and outto experience the wonders that South Africa has to offer.

In this, our first issuu of Love4Adventure we share some of our recent adventuresand hopefully inspire you to have some of your own.

    PrivatesAND OUTDOOR BATHS

ust 35km drive from Cape Townalong the N7 will transport you to

a windswept land of pastures andJlush tall grassland. The Mother

City disappears in the rearview mirror,

the mountain sinks and you can almost

imagine Rohirrim riding through seas of

grass, golden sun glinting off helm and

hauberk and bright hair flowing that

is until that one fool starts driving like a

    complete muppet behind you and

destroys your Lord of the Rings fantasy.Yeh there is always that one guy (you

know who you are) who tries to ruin

your holiday by behaving like a total tool

on the road. Once Id blasted him away

with the missiles behind my headlights

I could relax again and immerse myself

in the splendor of the Swartland.

    Approaching the Piekenierskloof pass

you cant help but be overcome by a

sense of awe as the great wall of the

Olifantsrivierberg rises in front of you.

The pass gently climbs the berg,

affording you magnificent views of the

Swartland. At the top of the pass you

are greeted by a few farm stalls and

    guest lodges including Hebron, our

new favorite in the Swartland /

    Olifantsrivierberg area, but well get

    back to that later.

Roughly 16km from the top of the pass

finds us at the entrance to the

Citrusdal Warm Bath Resort. I had last

been to the baths 10 years prior... and

to be honest I cant understand why it

took me so long to go back. I dont

think I would stay in the resort proper

my wife and I stayed in a great chalet /

huisie right next door to the owners

private guest house. The chalets are

basic, but that was exactly what we

wanted. A little time out from the mod-

cons. No TV, poor cell phone reception

(I turned mine off), a nice outside braai

area and the private outdoor bath.

When we first arrived I was forced to

    complain, apparently the tool factor

had been present here too. There is

something that really bugs me, and

    thats smoke, smoking and cigarette

butts. The previous guests at the chalet

quite clearly had zero respect for

nature or for anyone else and left the

detritus of their filthy habit laying all

about the braai and bath area. The

owner, Alan Hall, cleaned it up himself

    and expressed sincere apologies.

    Thanks Alan!

With the cigarette butts cleared we got

down to the serious business of

    relaxing! The outside baths are

serviced by the main spring via pipe it

works just like an ordinary bath, so no

surprises there. The water is soft and

warm and very soon we forgot all about

    work and city life.

After a good long soak I hopped out

and, much to my wifes chagrin, went

about getting the fire going wearing

    nothing but a foolish grin.

All you hear are birds chirping and the

calming sounds of trees and water.

That evening we were in bed quite

early, I dont think Ive fallen asleep

before 10pm in a long, long time. The

moment my head touched the pillow I

was unconscious. The next morning we

had every intention of getting up early

and walking up the mountain but theduvet somehow overcame us and we

got stuck in bed until a little after

10am. After a shower we strolled up to

    the main resort restaurant and

devoured a hearty brunch, a burger

with bacon and egg on top, while

chatting to some of the campers. Our

bodies fueled we walked up to the rock

pools and sat under the trees enjoying

    the tranquil sounds of nature.

And that is the GREATthing about the outsidechalets... total privacy. Its like being in yourown personal gardenof Eden.

The walk back to the chalet awoke inme a childhood memory. It was thetrampoline that triggered it. Without asecond thought I lost shoes and socksand began bouncing and somersaultinglike a... like a... well, like a gummy bearI guess. Once we had all the bounceout of our systems it was back to thechalet for a soak and a braai.

Thursday morning came far too soon. Two nights is not long enough at TheBaths, I would recommend at leastthree nights, if not longer. We packedour bags and waved the baths goodbye.Having decided to do some reconn onthe way into Citrusdal the Town, we

visited Tree Tops and Elephants LeisureResort. With all respect I was not veryimpressed with Elephants LeisureResort, despite their level of luxury. While I cant really fault the place, I justdid not feel as welcome as I had at TheBaths. Then it was on to town to find agood spot for breakfast and gathersome further intel on the area. Margotdu Toit at the Citrusdal tourisminformation office proved invaluable inthat regard. She explained that Hebron,at the top of the pass, was the best

spot for breakfast, but that we wereprobably too late. As it turned out,Steve, the owner and my namesake, isa top bloke and kept the kitchen open.He even let me into his kitchen, madeus a custom breakfast (I love hishomemade Kudu wors) and generallyacted like the true old friend host thathe is. Breakfast was delicious, if a littlepricey, which we forgave in a heartbeat.Hebron offers an assortment of

    5

homemade goodies like marmalade, hot sauce, preserved figs etc. The onlyproblem is that its all so good you haveto be selective or you will leave with acar full of goodies. You cant reallycomplain about the prices, especiallywhen most of the profit goes into a

trust to build homes for childrenorphaned by HIV/AIDS. I did say thatSteve is a top bloke!

e really needed that! It wasjust 2 nights away but it was aWperfect way to recharge and

relax. Aaah! The warm spring water, being Adam & Eve in our own secretEden (we stayed at an Outside Chaletat The Baths, Citrusdal) really helpedme to reconnect with my Love, onceback in sync I can even read histhoughts again (useful when menforget to use words!).

We managed to go to The Bathsmidweek, before the school holidays,so things were quiet. The fresh valleyair, hundreds of chirpy birds, springcolours and friendly locals makeCitrusdal a great destination - and atonly 175km out of Cape Town, withgreat scenery all the way, there is littlereason not to go.

I didn't do anything I thought I would! Ididn't start mulling over my friend'sbusiness plan, didn't write in my diaryand I didn't think about anything oranyone... other than the 2 of us - in themoment - and ideas and dreams forour future.

There is an old broken down mill nearthe entrance to The Baths whichintrigued us. The Halls are starting afund to repair and restore it. Despite itsstate of disrepair, when the sun hits it

We spent plenty oftime soaking in the

    private bath andstrolling around theresort.

just right you have to admit there issomething special about it.

At brunch on Thursday we met afriendly couple from Durbanville (on thedeck, under the trees at the restaurantat The Baths). I forgot your names(sorry), but wanted to tell you that thebirds we saw are Cape Turtle Doves.

We loved their car - a Toyota Fortuna, modified for offroad and originally usedby some serious overland adventurers. We loved the weather and the beautifulspring flowers. It was only as we wereleaving that we were told that autumn(Mar-May) is the preferred time to go, orwinter for extremists. The PERFECTexcuse to go back in Autumn... andWinter - ahem! Just to check, youknow...

o what do you do if you really enjoy

wine... a lot? You buy a wine shop

Sof course! Maybe that is not the

right answer for everyone but it's how wecame to be involved in Wine Concepts. Itwas a case of the pieces of a 3D puzzleall coming together at the right time. Neiland I have owned Wine Concepts onKloof for six years, but the brand hasbeen around for 12 years. MurrayGiggins and Mike Bampfield-Duggan, the founder/owners of Wine Concepts, have grown the brand to include 7shareholders, all extremely committed

and passionate about wine. Our passion for wine and customerservice are the two most importantqualities we have at Wine Concepts, it'swhat defines us. Nothing beats theinstant gratification of sharing the storybehind a wine with a customer and thenseeing them buy it. Sounds corny I know, but it still hits the sweat spot.My first "ah ha" moment in winehappened 17 years ago while sitting in aconverted cement fermenter enjoying a"wine evening" with a group of friends.Hugging my cider, Neil presented mewith a glass of Nederberg Edelkeur 197...he whispered something unprintable inmy ear and to this day I can still taste thehazel nuts and creamy, silky mouthfeel. In fact I still benchmark Noble LateHarvests against that moment, which isnot really fair as it was nearly 20 yearsold when I tasted it.That being said a Wooded Chardonnay ismy favourite wine. Chardonnay is bestserved with food as the wood can be richand powerful and needs something tobalance it. I also love an aged Cabernet,oh and Shiraz (new world style), olderRed Blends, White Blends, interestingSauvignon Blancs, wooded CheninBlancs, LOVE Pinot Noir and of courseMethod Cap Classique. Ok I love them alleven the obscure varieties and blends. My top three Chardonnays in noparticular order are: Uva MiraChardonnay 08, Rustenberg FiveSoldiers Chardonnay 06 and VriesenhofChardonnay 09.

    Silverthorn The Green Man 2008

    100% Chardonnay (Blanc de Blanc)

that has spent just over two years onthe lees with some of the base wine

barrel fermented. This wine shows a beautiful straw hue

with fine beads, a hint of apples andfreshly baked biscuits on the nose.

On the palate the Granny Smith applesare clearly evident giving the bubbly a

fresh mouthfeel and a fine mousse. This wine has a lingering finish with azesty, racy freshness that makes you

long for another sip.The Green Man is best served with

sushi, or any seafood dish, it servesas a great palate cleanser too.

No need to drink this Method CapClassique right away, cellar it for a

couple of years and experience thedifference, but remember only 7000

    bottles were crafted.

    Noble Hill Shiraz Mourvdre 2006

90% Shiraz, 10% Mourvdre spent 14months in barrel.

Dark Ruby in colour with hints of spiceon the nose. Although this is a Shiraz

dominated blend, the Mourvdredefinitely shows through with a meatyfull mouthfeel. The Shiraz part brings

the leather and Cedar Tree aromas withdark berry fruit tones.

The Noble Hill Shiraz Mourvdre is bestenjoyed with red meat dishes. Venisonwould compliment the wine very well.

Noble Hill kindly matured the bottles forus so this wine is ready to drink now.

Vriesenhof Chardonnay 2009This wine has spent 11 months in thebarrel giving it a rich golden colour witha beautiful nose of toast and vanilla. The 2009 has good citrus acidity thatkeeps the wine balanced. It has a richsilky mouthfeel & perfect elegance. The wine is topped off with a longvelvety finish. While Vriesenhof Chardonnay is bestenjoyed with seafood it stands up well

to meat dishes with somewhat heavierspiced flavours. This wine can be enjoyed now orcellared for two years or more.

Wrapped in warm jackets and gumbootswe jetted off to KZN early one winteryCape Town morning in August. I'm notsure who was more excited to fly, me orthe kids! The 'big plan' was to give thekids the chance to experience real snow not the kind you play in at the IceStation at GrandWest.

Landing at King Shaka InternationalAirport was a world apart from thebustl ing activi ty at Cape TownInternational. The atmosphere was more'off the beaten track' than thrivingcosmopolitan, which allowed me toimmediately switch my brain from'frazzled working mom' to 'chilled worldtraveler'. Well as close as I'm likely to getfor now anyway. The warm jackets andgumboots were discarded in favour ofstrappy tops and barefeet. But... therewas not a blade of green grass to be seenon my beloved rolling 'green' hills, letalone a flake of snow!

Meandering through rural KZN wearrived three-and-a-half hours later at the welcoming resort-style entrance of

the Drakensberg Gardens Golf & SpaResort, a three-star destinationoperated by the Gooderson LeisureGroup. Arriving mid-week, out-of-season, the resort was a peaceful, sprawlingplace nestled in a valley of high hills withthe ragged Drakensberg peaks at armslength and peacock families roamingfreely between the chalets and variousother accommodation options.

Our self-catering, family-sized, semi-detached apartment had all the basics

PLUS free DSTV which soon had me andthe kids hooked on Bear Grylls' UltimateSurvival. Our days were spent climbing the surrounding hills, losing the colourmarkers several times, but alwaysmaking our way back down to the resortwith ease and the thrill of a newadventure in our backpack.

The resort itself is geared for familyholiday activities (with or without snow)

and we were assisted by the capable, friendly 'Leisure Desk Lady' as we tried todecide between horse riding, troutfishing, badminton, tennis, boat ridesand more. One week is simply notenough to try it all but the kids enjoyedmany unforgettable firsts! Like the timethe five-year old sent the table tennis ballspinning through the games roomwindow to infinity and beyond, or whenthe seven-year old photographed 'brandnew baby goats' born just before we left.

Although there are a few facilities in needof a revamp/upgrade (like the mini-zoo)and a bewilderingly disappointingeatery, in the form of the Bergview, thegenuine hospitality of the staff at alllevels ensured an unforgettable stay. The delicious buffet served at theVineknot (complete with surprisinglyvaried wine list) was excellent value formoney and the range of light and easymeals at the Bistro with its homemadechocolate cake, a chessboard toentertain the five-year old for hours anddramatic 'berg views almost had usstaying permanently.

Motivated by Lewis Gordon Pugh'sAchieving the Impossible (perfectDrakensberg-holiday reading) I startedplanning our trip back. It will include thenine-hour hike up the Rhino Horn peakfollowed by a long, cool drink on theDrakensberg Gardens terrace. And even though the kids still haven't played in'real snow', right now I would settle forthem dancing in the rain. It has been soscarce in the region that the once strong-flowing Umzimkulu River running the

length of the resort has been reduced to trickling through the Hippo Pools andbarely muddying our boots in some spots

The good news is it's raining there as I sithere, 1600kms to the south, smiling atthe memory of our amazing, lovely familyadventure.

    not know about FICKSBURG

Situated in the scenic panorama of theEastern Free State, along the HighlandsRoute, Ficksburg nestles between thefoot of the Imperani Mountain and thebanks of the Caledon River, the naturalborder with Lesotho.

Ficksburg was founded on 12 June1867 and named after General JanFick, Commander-General of the oldOrange Free State Republic.

Today Ficksburg is known as thegateway to Lesotho and the Katse Damand boasts a large diverse population.Ficksburgs economy is based chieflyon cherries, asparagus, cherries, deciduous fruit and cherries. At presentthere is renewed attention being paidto apples and cherries, with morefarmers than ever planting apple trees.

The district is renowned for thebreathtaking sandstone formations ofthe mountains with many of the older

buildings in town built of sandstone.Interestingly, the Union Buildings inPretoria are built from sandstonequarried in the surrounding area.Gumtree (not the popular site), a smallsettlement just outside Ficksburg, hasthe tallest sandstone structure in theworld - an old mill which is sadly nolonger in use.

One of Ficksburgs best kept secrets!
