Letter From Our Executive Director/Treasurer

What an exciting and thrilling time we hadat this year’s meeting of the West Virginia Con-vention of Southern Baptists. We are indebtedto our wonderful hosts at First Baptist ofFairlea. The committee put together by PastorKevin Prevett and Wellington Johnson tookcare of our every need. The church has suchwonderful facilities that made for a great con-vention.

The Bible studies by Dr. Jeff Iorg of GoldenGate Seminary were certainly inspiring and theconvention sermon by Pastor Seth Polk wasconvicting and challenging. In his final wordsto us as President, Johnny Kelly brought abarn-burner of a message in his President’s ad-dress entitled For Such a Time as This.

We received the report of the FuturingGroup as they scoped out for the conventionsome adjustments we can make as we moveforward that will make us more effective.

The unity and harmony that was presentin the meetings was truly inspiring. As yourExecutive Director, I believe we are really readyto move forward and reach our state for Christ.

We have our team in place now, we haveour direction, and we have the enthusiasm tolead Southern Baptists in West Virginia to worktogether to accomplish the Great Commission.

Dear Friends:That is why we are here. As a convention

we exist to help the churches in their effort todo what our Lord Jesus commanded us to do.Working together with our capable, newlyelected officers I believe we can see recordgrowth for our Lord in the New Year.

As we approach the holiday season, wecannot do so without thinking about our mis-sion emphasis for this time of the year. OurLottie Moon Christmas Offering for Interna-tional Missions is received during this time. Ipray that we will once again go beyond whatseems humanly possible in order to reach thelost of the world for Christ. If each of us willsimply seek the Lord in this and ask Him whatHe would have us do, I know that we will givethe right amount.

In closing, one of the highlights of the con-vention this year was the recognition of LibbieFouty after 32 years of service to this organiza-tion. Libbie will retire in January. We wish herthe very best and many years of good health toenjoy her much deserved retirement. She hasbeen a faithful servant and a faithful Christian. She will be greatly missed, but we are happyfor her as she looks forward to spending moredays with her family and especially the grand-children.

Terry L. Harper

Editor’s Notes From the Annual Meeting in Fairlea, WV

From the opening note of the two concur-rent Thursday conferences for ministers andtheir spouses to the closing prayer of the Con-vention on Saturday morning, participants en-joyed one of the most harmonious, upliftingseries of WV annual meetings in recent history.Blessed with sunshine and temperatures in thelow 70’s, hosted by a church that had madeexcellent plans for the events, messengerscould not have experienced a better atmospherefor spiritual growth.

The First Baptist Church of Fairlea, led bypastor Kevin Prevett and a host of lay volun-teers had all things in readiness for the 311messengers and guests who visited their wellcared for and impressive facilities. When theResolutions Committee presented a statementof appreciation for the church’s exemplary hos-pitality, the unanimous vote of approval wasaccompanied by a heartfelt round of applause.

The Pastors’ Conference and Ministers’Wives Conference were both well attended thisyear. Speakers at both venues received highmarks from participants for interesting, relevant, and inspirational messages and testimonies.

Music at both meetings was impressive.Faithful Heart, a ladies quartet from Fairlawn inParkersburg brought music at the meeting forwomen and at the Convention as well. DennisBenton’s music at the Pastor’s Conference wasprofessional and uplifting.

Dr. Mike Rutledge, Jacob Atchley, Dr.Stephen Rummage, and Dr. Greg Wrigley allbrought challenging sermons at the pastors’conference. Testimonies by Linda Hopkins andHelen Melquist, a Bible study by Emilee Polk, and a missions report by Maxine Bumgarnercombined to make a very beneficial and uplift-ing conference for the ministers’ wives group.

The host church provided refreshments inthe exhibit area plus a Thursday evening mealand a Friday evening afterglow reception inhonor of Libbie Fouty and to celebrate the 35thanniversary of the WVCSB.

The annual meeting itself was designed tolift up two key areas of celebration. The first, mentioned above, was the 35th anniversarycelebration. The other focus area was the re-port from the Futuring Group.

In addition to a beautiful reception hostedby the Fairlea congregation, much of the Fri-day evening session was devoted to honoring

the churches and leaders who have helped toform and build the WVCSB. The session in-cluded a photographic slide show of thechurches and chapels who formed the conven-tion in 1970 accompanied by the solo artistryof Randy Spurgeon singing May All Who ComeBehind Us Find Us Faithful. In addition, longtenured pastors such as Tommy Knotts, CledithCampbell and Eddie Henson were honored fortheir lengthy contribution to WVCSB’s life.Long tenured state staffers Tom Young, KayBoyd, Maxine Bumgarner and Libbie Foutywere also singled out for their contributions.

One especially moving part of Fridaynight’s celebration was the recognition givento Libbie Fouty on the occasion of her retire-ment. Fouty will actually retire in January butwas honored because this was her last con-vention as a state employee. Both her com-ments and those of her co-workers about herwere heart warming and encouraging.

The Futuring Group has met for over a yearin an effort to discover God’s direction for theConvention in coming years. The report waspresented to messengers in printed form asthey registered and was then explained in atwo-part presentation, the first given by Rich-ard Lawrence, a layman from 1st Hinton, thesecond given by Tim Kearney, a layman fromGood Shepherd, Scott Depot.

The Futuring Group based almost all oftheir report on the feedback they received fromWest Virginia people via a survey offered toover 6300 people. The report affirmed the long-standing purpose statement of the Conventionand accompanied it with a new vision state-ment that puts renewed focus on the issue ofbuilding fellowship and harmony between thechurches, associations and state convention. The vision statement reads as follows: “Thevision of the West Virginia Convention ofSouthern Baptists is to build cooperative re-lationships that mobilize God’s people to worktogether in reaching West Virginia and theworld for Christ.”

The report also identified five categoriesof concerns that surfaced as priorities in theminds of the 541 persons who responded tothe survey. The categories are (in no particularorder of importance) Missions and Evangelism;Prayer and Spiritual Renewal; Building Fellow-ship; Communications and Public Relations;

Discipleship, Leadership Devel-opment, and StrengtheningChurches.

Two new state staffers wereintroduced to messengers at thisyear’s meeting, Jacob Atchleyand Greg Wrigley. In Atchley’stime Friday afternoon he took theopportunity to honor BarryFleming and the Brushfork Bap-tist Church for leading the statein baptisms this year with 66 re-ported. Atchley also took timeto honor Lyn Sommerville for hermany years of service on behalfof youth in WV. Finally, he pre-sented a plaque to Libbie Foutywho has served as his secretaryand as the secretary for the stateevangelism director during her 32years of service.

Messengers from 7 newchurches were seated at themeeting and one additional workwas placed under watchcare. Thenew churches include Commu-nity in Grantsville, Covenant inPrinceton, Crosspoint in Hun-tington, Locust Grove in Hun-tington, Mountain View inHedgesville, Grace inFayetteville, and New River inFayetteville. The work placedunder watchcare is Nehemiah inCool Ridge.

New officers for 2005-06 areDr. C.J. Adkins, president; TimKearney, 1st V.P.; Seth Polk, 2ndV.P.; Fred Morgan, secretary.

Total messengers was 215.

Empowering Kingdom Growthby Rev. Ron McCoy

October 1, 2005 was thestarting point for Southern Bap-tists to reach one of the boldestgoals in our history, Witness,Win, & Baptize 1 Million pre-

cious souls. I remember the apostle Paul’s boldstatement in Philippians 3:14, “I press on to-ward the goal for the prize of the upward call ofGod in Christ Jesus. (NASU)

Another translation words it this way, “I’moff and running, and I’m not turning back.”That was the impression I received from ourpresident Bobby Welch when he boarded thebus to tour and encourage our churches tokeep pressing on to meet that goal.

What now West Virginia? What’s our goal?I think it would be inspiring and challenging aseach church sets it’s “Goal for Souls,” for thatnumber to be forwarded to our Director of Evan-gelism, Jacob Atchley. Then we would have astate goal to work toward. Each month reportscould be shared and celebrated.

Church, lets never forget that we are incompetition with Satan for souls. If that doesn’tencourage you to press toward the mark and

to hit the ground running and never look back,I don’t know what will.

Reflect on the words of this great hymn ofthe faith, “Rescue the Perishing.” Rescue theperishing, duty demands it. Strength for yourlabor the Lord will provide. Back to the narrowway patiently win them. Tell the poor wanderera Savior has died.

Set your goal, then pray, weep and go. Castyour net out into the deep. Then and only thencan the rejoicing begin.

Our church has set a goal of 40 precioussouls. Our previous high was 15. My feeling isthat when we reach our goal, we will go afteranother 40, then another and another until theLord comes back so that none may perish butthat all may be saved. To God be the Glory!

Rev. Ron McCoy, pastor, Cameron Bap-tist, is the past 1st V. President of the WVCSB.

Your state convention staff meets eachworking day for a brief time of prayer. Wepray for missionaries, campuses, associa-tions, churches, and chapels by name eachday. We invite our readers to pray as well.

Pray for the International MissionsEmphasis, That All Peoples May Know Him.For Southern Baptists, December is a time tofocus on the last command of Jesus, “Gotherefore and make disciples of all the na-tions, baptizing them in the name of the Fa-ther, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that Ihave commanded you ... (Matthew 28:19-20a, NKJV). Pray for your church’s involve-ment in praying and giving to support about5,200 international missionaries servingaround the world.

Consider “going deeper.” There aremany ways to do this. Here are two ideas: (1)Commit to pray for missionaries each day, especially on their birthday and (2) Consider

church.Several groups from West Virginia have or

are now preparing to travel to Louisiana or Mis-sissippi to assist in disaster relief efforts there. The following is an example of some of the feel-ings of the residents there in response to theefforts of WV volunteers: “To the participantsfrom the WVCSB, Thank you so much for com-ing to Louisiana after Katrina. Our commu-nity (Pearl River) was truly blessed by all ofyour efforts. I wish you could have seen ourstudents. Thankyou and may God continue to bless you. BeckyHolley, Assistant Principal.”

In a message to the congregation at FirstSouthern Baptist, Fairmont, National Guards-man Carl Phillips, just back from duty in NewOrleans recounted what it was like for ourtroops as they tried to restore order during thepost-Katrina chaos. “I have returned with asevere reaction to poison ivy. The mosquitosand heat were very uncomfortable and the fireants caused a lot of pain for those unfortunateenough to be bitten by them.

“On the way to looking for bodies, survi-vors, etc., (Phillips is a medic.) we saw mediapersonalities like Oprah and Katie Couric. Wealso learned that racoons like MRE’s (MealsReady-to-Eat). I saw one that had polished offa whole box of Smores candy bars.

“One of the untold miracles of those firstdays of response was the fact that some 40helicopters were working in the area with nobenefit of an air traffic contral system and therewere no accidents!

“I was reminded of 1 Kings 19:9, the pas-sage where God spoke to Elijah in a still, smallvoice. It occured to me that God didn’t speakto Elijah in the big wind that preceded the still, small voice but he sure used it to get his atten-tion! If God hasn’t got our attention with theserecent disasters, our spiritual hearing must begone!

“One other thing I noticed was that therewere still a lot of oak trees standing while mostof the other varieties did not withstand thestorm. It made me want to become as spiritu-ally sound and rooted as an oak tree.”

David Sommerville, pastor at First,
