Thank you to the many parents and their children who came along and enjoyed the opportunity of experiencing our Prep Hub. I have received a number of bookings for prep tours so our office will get back to you with an appointment time. We are planning some further opportunities for our 2018 Preps; this information will be communicated to you when you complete your child’s enrolment. We are really looking forward to seeing you all again. Lost Property Our lost property bin is full to the brim with uniforms. Many of the items appear to be new especially the school bomber jackets and windcheaters. Unfortunately, many of the items are not named so it is difficult to get these items back to the students. If you have time it would be worth having a look in the lost property bin. It is also a timely reminder to ensure you put your child’s name on their uniforms. The Beat Next Tuesday August 29 th and Wednesday August 30 th our Year 5 and 6 students will be performing in The Beat. The Beat is an opportunity for all Government Primary and Secondary schools to showcase their Performing Arts. Miss Bicker and Mrs Tregeagle along with a number of our very talented ‘Southies’ have been planning and rehearsing their performance. I would encourage you to go along to the Mildura Arts Centre and enjoy a wonderful night of entertainment. Tickets sell out very quickly, so I would suggest that you pre purchase from the Arts Centre. Mini Olympics We have quite a few students particularly in years 4, 5 and 6 competing in the Mini Olympics at the Aero ovals next Tuesday August 29 th . Families of these students are welcome to attend and support their child. I would like to wish them all the best of luck and know they will do their very best. Pink Ball Our Pink Ball to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation is on Saturday October 28 th . We are looking forward to a great night and raising lots of cash to support research into finding a cure for this horrible disease. NEWSLETTER NO.24 Thursday 24th August 2017

On the 19th and 20th of August, I raced in the

Australian Senior Dirt Track championships, in the

junior support class. It was held in Mildura. I finished

4th in Australia for my class and my next race is on the

10th September. I am participating at the South

Australian Dirt Track Championships that will be held

in Victor Harbour. I am aiming to finish in the top 3.

My biggest achievement so far was finishing 3rd in

Australia for the Junior Girls in the Australian Junior

Track Championships, that was also held in Mildura

back in July.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Not in front of the children

Michael Grose

The things parents say in front of their children have

wide-ranging effects on their learning, confidence and

behaviour.

American psychologist Martin Seligman found in his

research about optimism that children usually reflect

the thoughts and opinions presented by their parents.

For example, if a parent is a pessimist, then there is

every chance that the children will pick up and convey

the ‘woe is me’ way of viewing the world. As parents,

this means we are required to be mindful of how we

present the world to our children.

Children take their cues from parents as trusted adults

It is not just with optimism or pessimism that we need

to be careful about our messaging. Children take their

cues from their parents as they work out how to behave

and belong in all sorts of ways. Tell a child he has a

learning difficulty and he or she will believe it. Tell a

child he or she has a behaviour problem and he or she

will believe it. Tell them they are no good at maths

and the message will more than likely stick. And why

not? Children look at parents as wise, trusted adults

who know a thing or two about the world. Even

adolescents, who are renowned for wanting to

challenge the authority and world view of their parents,

still use their parents as significant reference points.

Parents who talk down other people – including

teachers, friends and family members – in the vicinity

of their children are teaching those children to devalue

those same people. Even when we vent about someone

else out of sheer frustration we are shaping our

children’s views about that person.

‘I don’t have to do that work’

Stories are common, where students think they have

the support of their parents in refusing to carry out

learning tasks set by the teacher. It is important to trust

that teachers are setting learning at the students’ point

of need and not argue that expectations are too high

and the work too hard for your children.

Negative views of learning expectations and

student/teacher relationships can shut down a student’s

capacity to learn. Some children are quicker than

others to latch on to their parents’ negativity as an

excuse either not to work or to lower the expectations

of outcomes.

Sometimes it is best to say nothing at all

As adults we have all sorts of opinions that don’t

necessarily need to be shared with our children. We

may hold strong political views for example, but if

young people are to formulate their own opinions then

it may be wise to notice when the children are around

and the words we are using at that time.
