world of produce (& coffee...& cheese) Welcome to our wondeful
BY NOW, you are probably well aware that it’s a coffee themed kinda year here at lost magazine. And it’s no secret that Daylesford and the surrounding villages are well spoilt when it comes to this fine beverage. Also spoilt for choice are we for fresh produce: cured meats, rare-breed meats, heirloom vegies, fresh fish, artisan chocolates, fine wines, amazing spuds, organic and biodynamic fruits, and cheese! It probably comes as no surprise that the entire lost team has a particular penchant for cheese… Yes indeed! And this month we’re in luck with the Daylesford Macedon Produce Harvest Week Festival well underway, and one such class teaching the art of cheese making! The Italian soft cheese making demonstration will be held on Wednesday, May 2, at Aperitivo (57 Piper Street, Kyneton) where the art of producing fresh Italian mozzarella and ricotta using traditional methods will be shared. Cost is just: $65 per person and bookings can be made online at: sausagesmadesimple.com.au. Also as part of the festival, on Thursday, May 3, from 1pm, you can head to Daylesford Primary School (Vincent Street) and check out exactly what the Kitchen Garden Project is all about. Take a tour of their magnificent vegie garden, meet the kids and enjoy an afternoon tea made by them. Please phone for bookings, on: 5348 3958.There are a myriad of delicious things to do as part of the Harvest Week Festival from workshops, dinners, restaurant and winery specials, or tour around for the ‘taste your way around the region’ tasting plate special at particapting venues all celebrating the richly diverse produce on offer in this region. Kooky SpookyOooooOOOooooo...FOR those not afraid of the dark, nor things that goes bump in the night, herein, activities for you. Lovely Daylesford has quite the coloured past. Ask any local and you’ll hear about underground tunnels leading to the old morgue and secret entrances to historic pubs, or bordello houses frequented by the miner gentleman of yesteryear. Then there are many tales of grisly murders and mystery disappearances of local townsfolk (okay maybe we made that part up). However, Eerie Tours, will share non-made-up stories during their ’Murder and Mystery Tours,’ at night (of course) throughout the streets of Daylesford. The Convent Gallery (Daly Street, Daylesford) also presents paranormal experts on their ‘Ghosts of our Pioneers’ tours in the 140 year old mansion. CAN’T Think Straight (41 Vincent Street Daylesford) is a fab little shop/gallery space that sells colourful and eclectic pieces of awesomeness. (Gay, green and everything in between is their own apt description). They host regular exhibitions, and this month are showing a collection of photographic works by Jeremy Williams entitled Identity. Jeremy investigates identity through works exploring personal discovery (‘Coming Out: Emerging from Adolescence’), stereotypes (‘Dolls’) and censorship (‘Censored’). These personal pieces will adorn the walls at Can’t Think Straight from Tuesday, May 1, till the end of June. Jeremy has a passion for music, and has previously taken many portraits of bands and musicians including Hanson, Owl Eyes, Sarah Blasko, Paris Wells, Wynter Gordon and Lanu. Page-turners Anonymousget back to BooktownTHERE’S a teeny town not far from here called Clunes. And in Clunes, they’re mad about books. Clunes is a magical, historic gold town, its wide streets lined with 1850s architecture. It’s a small place, a quiet place. But one weekend of the year Clunes is transformed into a bustling haven for lovers of the literary, at the annual Clunes Booktown Festival. Thousands converge on the wee town to trawl through Australia’s largest collection of rare, out of print and second-hand books, with over 60 booksellers from around the country unloading scores of books onto the tiny gold rush town, transforming Clunes into a fabulous European style Booktown. The festival is on Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6. As well as the written word available for purchase, visitors to Booktown will have the rare opportunity to enjoy presentations, readings and signings from this year’s notable Booktown guests: including speakers from the Wheeler Centre, the State Library, academics, publishers, historians, poets and much loved and awarded Australian and international authors. The first Booktown Festival (held in 2007), was something of an experiment, that exploded. Locals still speak of the day when there were more people in town than at the gold rush, and the town ran out of everything… money, food and electricity. With the festival now in its sixth year, Clunes’ population still explodes, (but they order in more food...and electricity). Excitingly, in late April, the International Organisation of Book Towns recognised Clunes as the first official Booktown in the Southern Hemisphere. Truly cementing this world class Booktown event onto the international map. Kudos goes indeed to the Booktown Committee and passionate townsfolk of Clunes who made it happen. Get back to Booktown. Stroll the stalls and seek the shelves for a page-turner. Enjoy fantastic food, live entertainment, Children’s Booktown, and look through the crowds to another era, where new settlers once mined for wealth and fortune, they now trawl the streets, not spending a fortune, to obtain a wealth of words. the wild onesWeeding out
SUN rain, rain sun, yep it’s full blown Autumn weather around these parts… and the perfect season to sprout weeds in your freshly dug bulb beds. But… just before you mix up the Round Up or pull out those pesky ‘grow faster than you can remove’ weeds… perhaps you could consider a course in edible wild plants? Yes that’d be correct, a course whereby you learn which of said pesky plants could be plated up for din dins. Local lad, Alexis Pitsopoulos, who has for a couple of decades promoted these wild edibles as a serious food source, will share his wisdom at The Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp Street) on Sundays, May 6, and May 27 during the Edible Wild Plants of Daylesford course. The first session involves an identification wander through the streets to find out what edible wild plants are growing quite literally under your feet. He will point out the culinary and medicinary uses and even more importantly teach which plants are dangerous and need be avoided. The second (additional) session will demonstrate how to prepare tasty meals from your collected ‘weeds’. Think of your foraging as kind of hunting for bush tucker, but in an urban kind of way… So before you give that stinging nettle, dandelion, milk thistle, or wild onions the pull, check out how useful they may actually be. Alexis has even appeared with his ‘weed walk’ on the fabulous Costa’s Garden Odyssey program on SBS. Not convinced? Divide your timebetween cakes & sweatDON’T be fooled by thinking Daylesford is just all about fine dining, day spas, and indulgence. It’s also about the tranquillity, the forest, and, the…ah, the serenity. One of the best ways to experience said serenity is to pull on some hiking boots and hit the Goldfields Track (there’s a 280km network of tracks that follow the Great Dividing Range aptly named: The Great Dividing Trail), yep it goes right through here and has access points in both Daylesford, Hepburn Springs and Castlemaine. Pick up a copy of the map from either of the Daylesford or Castlemaine Visitor Information Centres or visit the website at: gdt.org.au. Or, see the sights by mountain bike and venture into the depths of The Wombat State Forest. There’s a clever local company, Tipperary Bicycle Hire, that hires out both mountain and commuter bikes and will deliver them to you (the fees are very reasonable) they’ll dish out some good advice on where to head to suit your level, and now you can eat that cake - guilt free! TUKI Trout Farm (60 Stoney Rises Rd, Smeaton) is a haven for foodies, fishermen and families alike. As part of the Daylesford Macedon Produce Harvest Festival (Friday, April 27, till Sunday, May 6,) Tuki is hosting a slow food dinner. Take a tour of the farm, (see those slow trout and sheep in action), catch a trout or two, then have it perfectly prepared for your dinner.Tuki will serve an entree of smoked trout pate and smoked lamb sausage. Your catch of the day is the main meal, with slow roast lamb and pasture fed beef. Slow cooked deliciousness with zero food miles to boot. Delectably fresh and totally Tuki. IN CASE you hadn’t noticed it gets a bit gorgeous around here in Autumn. And in May, one of the prettiest properties in the region is Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm. (350 Hepburn-Newstead Road, Shepherds Flat). Right now the fruit, nut trees and vines are spectacular, with leaves changing every colour of the Autumnal spectrum. Lavandula’s Autumn Harvest Festival is held in the midst of this explosion of colour, on Sunday, May 6, from 10:30am. Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy this special place whilst savouring fabulous local food and wine. Throughout Autumn, grapes are pressed for wine, fragrant herbs are hung to dry, olives are harvested, and either pressed into oil or pickled and bottled. THIS time of year, as the world around us seemingly slips into hibernation, one form of life has a population explosion. Fungi. In this region all shapes, sizes, weird and wonderful colours and species of fungi literally pop up overnight. Alison Pouliot is a fungi expert, and is hosting a very special event with Michael de Jong at Ellender Estate Winery (260 Green Gully Road, Glenlyon) Tuesday, May 8 and Wednesday May 9, 10.30am to 4.30pm. Alison will present a fascinating insight to the fungi kingdom, introducing participants to many different fungi types, with a focus on edible varieties, followed by a mushroom inspired lunch by Chef Michael de Jong. After lunch you are invited to take part in a fungi forage around the winery and nearby forest. Cost is $120 per person. Whole lot of creative spaceto celebrate life (& tattoos)LOT 19 Gallery (Langslow Street, Castlemaine) is an eclectic space open to a wide persuasion of artists. Promoted as an ‘evolving artspace founded to celebrate life’ it houses studio spaces, an outdoor stage, a contemporary art gallery (also hosting musicians), marionette theatre, performance, and film, and an outdoor sculpture park. And this month features Liz Archer, a Hepburn artist and art teacher, with a passion for the traditional Japanese tattoo and Asian art in general. Her latest work, Gestured Conversations explores the concept of tattoo through the trapunto quilted figures which are painted in the narrative myths and symbolism in the tradition of the Japanese tattoo. In the Pinkon Mother’s Day
So Frenchy,so CreswickOOH la la! There’s a French Patisserie in Creswick! Le Peche Gourmand. (69a Albert Street). Proprietors Paul and Marie opened their petit café in March to frenzied scenes of croissant scoffing. You see, Paul has something of a pastry pedigree, having worked in five star and Michelin hatted restaurants, delicately handcrafting exquisite desserts for the schmanciest palettes around the globe. Paul now lovingly crafts them in downtown Creswick and they regularly sell out before you can say boulangerie. Perhaps it’s Marie’s beautiful French/Canadian accent and outstanding barista skills? Or perhaps it’s the imported French cultured butter? (the secret ingredient, it makes everything delectable). Whatever it is, their traditional French pastries, croissants, éclairs, incredible tarts and cakes and range of breads: baguettes, boule and sweet buttery brioche baked daily will have you coming back for more. Oui indeed! Open Tuesday to Saturday 7:30am-4pm and Sunday 8am-noon.
AUSTRALIA’S largest charity fundraiser event is the annual Mother’s Day Classic. Donating the single largest annual donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. It’s a seriously fun way to raise serious funds for a seriously good cause. Seriously. Sunday, May 13, don the runners and head to Woodend Children’s Park (Nicholson Street), for a 3km walk/run or a 6km walk/run. You’ll need to register online by 12 noon on Wednesday, May 9. Once registered you’ll receive a fundraising URL to send to everyone for sponsorship. Can’t remember the last time you used run and fun in the same sentence? No probs, you can raise funds without pulling on said runners! Who doesn’t loveFarmers? And their arms?THE Farmers Arms Hotel (1 East Street) is Daylesford’s oldest pub, (1857) but if you saw her on a Friday or Saturday night you’d see she’s still oh-so young at heart. Almost three years ago Susanne and Claire took the reins and have gently coaxed even more life out of the old pub. The Farmers is a much loved Daylesford institution with its red walls, roaring fire, great food and wine list and famous Friday night charity raffle. There are five prizes on offer (tickets sold from 6:30, drawn at 7:30) – Yes, of course there’s a meat tray up for grabs, it’s a country pub! But there’s nothing ‘country pub’ about the food, chef Gavan Anders’ menu is diverse and delicious and suits intimate dinners or functions with friends. Cheers indeed to our Farmers! HOW can we resist a quick plug for a band requiring no review, as they are the ‘Woohoo Revue’. Described as ‘a fiendishly talented sextet who create an adrenalin-fuelled celebration fit for dancing, drinking and ignoring tomorrow’ and Hepburn Springs is in luck, they are headed for The Palais (111 Main Road) on Friday, May 18.The Woohoo Revue’s style of Balkan-gypsy-brass-band-roaring 20s-swing-ensemble will fit perfectly with the grand old dame borne of the same era, and a local crowd who love to forget about tomorrow. YOU say potato, I say SPUDFEST. Ohh yes, the biggest deal since crinkle cut chips is here, Spudfest 2012! Tiny Trentham town is deep in the heart of famous spud country. Trentham’s rich volcanic soil grows top ‘tatoes, and once a year the proud community celebrates loudly with a fantastic day of spudtacular family fun. Now in its fifth year, Spudfest celebrations start early, with the Spudfest Grand Opening Event to be held Friday, May 18, 7pm at the Mechanic’s Hall, High Street (Tickets $20 from Trentham Neighbourhood Centre). Hear tales of the early potato farmers, enjoy spudelicious finger food and live music by Maria Forde and Family Farm. Saturday’s Spudfest Spectacular is mashed full of spud fun, with a full day program of food, music, games, entertainment, historic spud hut tours, and spud sales (of course!) They’re in season and mighty good right now – check out the Trentham Farmers’ Market for even more fresh produce. (See Market Guide on page: 48).Quarry Street Trentham will be transformed to Spud Hub. With hot potatoes, great local art, and fab music from the Bonza Banana Band and Black and Blue. Climb to the top of Spud Hill, and get into some fun spud stuff at Spud Arena, including spud pot luck, spud hoopla, spud smasher, spuds alive, spud scramble, a spud sack race, (you get the idea… basically if it’s spudable, they’ll be doing it at Spudfest). Saturday night, May 19, the Spudtacular Dinner will be held at the Mechanics Hall. THE unstoppable craft movement has given birth to a new generation of makers, knitters, crochet-ers, felters, sew-ers, quilters and creators of all manner of handmade loveliness. Knitting clubs, Janome parties, artisan yarn producers and sellers are the new clique in town, and we, the non-crafty, are the lucky beneficiaries of this influx of hand crafted gorgeousness. On the weekend of Friday, May 25, till Sunday, May 27, cast on to Castlemaine as the Castlemaine CWA hosts The Beanie Affair. This time of year the humble beanie becomes more than just a warm accessory, it becomes a vital garment as temperatures plummet, so if you have to wear one, you might as well make it a fashion statement. The Beanie Affair showcases the skill of local textile artists and every beanie on display will be for sale. As part of the event there will be workshops for beginners, through to master-classes for ninja knitters. Join knitting lounges in cafes and pubs, meet fellow artisans, (or be totally star-struck by their awesome skill) Beanie Hub will be at the Castlemaine Uniting Church Hall (24 Lyttleton Street), where all handmade beanies and hand spun yarn (in the $20 - $100 category) will be for sale. YOU gotta love community spirit. And you gotta love when that spirit creates a real unity within a community. Local ladies, Michelle Clifford and Carmel Thannhauser have set up a not-for-profit committee and have gone and done just that, bundled their own sense of community to create the Daylesford Community Op Shop (4 Albert Street, Daylesford.) Before you scream “the world has gone Op Shop mad!”… wait, this one is different. Based on a Swedish model, the Daylesford Community Op Shop has been formed to help keep the region sustainable by encouraging the use of resources we already have, or those that are within easy reach, and especially to give back to community groups. Each month will see a different group sponsored - May is all about Hepburn Wildlife Shelter (hepburnwildlifeshelter.com). And the shop itself plans to provide all things one may need (without the hassle of having to leave town to get it, or add to the planet’s wastage by having to buy brand new). Nice. They’ll even sell second hand electrical items! The shop is set up like a wee village, with a lounge set up, reading corner and even a seed bank, a true community drop in one-stop-shop. The expectation is that in a year it will inject $100,000 back in to the community.Local organisations that are interested can apply for the monthly profit to help fund their service.
