Head turning page turnersand bookishly handsome booksPUBLIC schools need to raise money to sustain the awesome programs they run. Awesome Schools = Awesome Kids = Awesome Australia for generations to come. Most schools have to run fundraisers to help boost what they can offer the kids. These fundraisers can take just about any form - from Freddo Frogs to fêtes, from trivia nights to three-legged teacher races – everyone pitches in to make a buck for the kids.Daylesford Primary School is no different. Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, Daylesford Primary School is holding their fifth annual Book Fair in the school gymnasium (at 102 Vincent Street, Daylesford). It’s their big fundraiser for the year, and raises vital funds to enhance the school’s literacy program. This year’s book fair promises to be bigger and better than ever and is the launch event for the annual Words In Winter Festival. The school gymnasium will be transformed into a massive book store. With tables and trestles groaning under the weight of thousands of good quality pre-loved secondhand and new books donated by our generous community and publishers. Prices start at $1. All genres will be catered for from sci-fi to autobiographies, kids’ picture books, to non fiction… and everything in between. In addition to the books on offer the school will be selling cakes and soup for hungry book hunters. (Hot tip: There are many awesome bakers in the parent group at DPS so get in early for something delicious!) A floral tribute to Words in WinterPosies and Poetry

Magical Grandparentsare the best REMEMBER when your Pop would do that trick that made it look like he was sticking a pencil up his nose, then he’d pull it out the other side? AH-MAY-ZING. Grandpa magic is so cool. Grandparents are totally magical people anyway, but those with magical powers rise to Grandparent Level Expert. Woodend Neighbourhood House is running a seven week course in Magic For Grandparents (yes!!) Now those without natural magical abilities will be able to master a few classic tricks to astound the grandkids! Your tutor is professional magician Adam. Across seven 90 minute sessions he will teach you how to make things disappear and reappear, some super easy (but awesome) card tricks, rope magic and loads of others to keep up your sleeve (so to speak). Magic for Grandparents begins Monday, August 3, and runs each Monday until September 14. Course fee $175. More info and bookings go to woodendnh.org.au or call 5427 1845.

WORDS in Winter is for everyone. You don’t need to be an author or bibliophile to jump in and get involved! Each year the Clunes Garden Club host a tribute to Words In Winter by running their very own event… (yes, a garden club… see, everyone can be involved!) Monday, August 3, the Clunes Garden Club will host a special afternoon of poetry and posies. Bring a posy from your garden and a garden related poem to read or share. Feel free to write your own, if you’re so inspired by what’s happening in your garden, or bring along a favourite by another poet to share. Whip up something for afternoon tea, and share an afternoon with happy gardeners, beautiful posies and words. This event is open to everyone (all ages). Posies and Poetry will be held at the Clunes Senior Citizens’ Community Centre (25 Fraser Street, Clunes) from 1:30pm. For more info contact Jill 0438 640 431.

Trentham Artist hangs with the best in SydneySTEPPING out from the cobblestone streets of the Edwardian Era, our subject, Marigold has somehow found herself in modern-day Sydney - on the walls of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Trentham artist Catherine Abel is well known and regarded for her beautiful figurative paintings of women. Her work is well loved around the world. Catherine is inspired by the art deco era, and has had significant acknowledgement of her talent in the past with her ‘Portrait of Julia Leigh’ listed as a finalist in the 2006 Archibald Prize. This year Catherine completed a large oil-on-linen piece entitled After The Opera. It depicts young Marigold sitting in a library clutching a small book to her chest. She is beautiful, wealthy and intriguing. Catherine entered After The Opera into this year’s Sulman Art Prize. (The Sulman is one of three major art awards awarded by The Art Gallery of NSW, the others being the Wynne for landscapes and the Archibald for portraiture. The Sulman is awarded for genre paintings.) Across the three prizes there were a record amount of entries this year. After the Opera was short listed as one of only twenty four finalists in the Sulman, not bad indeed!Catherine’s piece will hang in the Art Gallery of New South Wales until Sunday, September 27. (Pop in if you’re up there!) After the Opera is still available for sale, (!! You could take this work of art from the walls at AGNSW and hang it in your lounge room – Yes wow!) Visit catherineabelstore.com for details (and to see Catherines’ other works, including paintings, prints and small works.) You can purchase works through her store website, or in person at her gallery at 17 Market Street Trentham (open Saturdays and Sundays 11am – 4pm) Or by appointment (0425 327 969). Call in and see what she’s working on, and the beautiful pieces you can take home today. Catherine Abel is on Facebook. Like her pages to see what goes on behind the scenes in the life of an artist. facebook.com/ArtistCatherineAbel and facebook.com/catherineabelgallery

New tunesat the Old Hep

Tiny Tilesand Grand Works of ArtHAVE you strolled through the Block Arcade in Melbourne? Perhaps admired an ancient mosque in Iran, Turkey or Morocco? Maybe you’ve gazed upwards in an Italian basilica? If you’re a fan of teeny little tiles, you have no doubt swooned over mosaic work around the world. Creating mosaics is a fine art, the best are painstakingly made (centimetre by centimetre) by highly skilled artists. The best work lasts centuries, and can be seen on almost every continent. If you have a dream to cover something in tiny tiles, you’re in luck! The Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp Street) is hosting a six week mosaic course, starting Friday, August 7. (10am – 12pm) The cost for the course is just $50. BYO project or buy a kit from Meg (your tutor). Learn all about mosaic application, and the tips and tricks to make your project last for eons. For more info and bookings call Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre 5348 3569.

THE Old Hepburn Hotel does well to pull the calibre of artists it does through its doors. Each and every month they have a line up of gigs that any self-appreciating music fan usually falls over themselves to get to. This month is no exception with Shane Nicholson taking to the stage Thursday, August 6, from 8pm. Shane has been away from the studio for a while now, taking some time out, venturing north to find the head space he needed to create an album of raw, heart-felt stuff. His latest studio release Hell Breaks Loose is his first solo album since splitting with Kasey Chambers. The material is awesome and digs deep into what’s been happening in his life lately. Shane is an ARIA, APRA and Golden Guitar winning performer. See him play at the Old Hep (236 Main Rd, Hepburn) and you’ll discover you’re a fan. More info and tickets ($25) at oldhepburnhotel.com.au or call 5348 2207.

Our thoughts exactlyWoof Woof, Bow Wow

Natural Beekeepingfor the love of honeyBEES are awesome. Pretty much anyone can keep bees. They’re not your average cute and cuddly pet, but they’re way more useful than guinea pigs, and create considerably more honey than a Doberman. Natural beekeeping is a great way to get to know your bees, and to care for them in a way that is in tune with nature. Natural beekeeping can be a low cost and easy way to introduce bees into your life. The Creswick Neighbourhood Centre is hosting a weekend workshop on Natural Beekeeping Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9. (10am – 4:30pm both days.) The workshop will cover theory and practical stuff for beginners. Learn about our fuzzy buzzy friends and how to best provide for them. Discover three types of hives, beekeeping boxes, equipment and tools, and taste some honey! Cost $150. For more info and bookings call Creswick Neighbourhood Centre 5345 2356 or go to creswicknc.org.au

IF your dog could talk – what do you think he’d say to you? Would it be a complaint about the mushy canned dog food? (Probably – eww.) Would they let you know they prefer wearing the cute hand-knitted vest to the Wonder Woman costume? Or would they just want to give you a great big lick and tell you how much they love you? …How awesome would it be to speak dog!? Saturday, August 8, Tricia Dunlop will host a How to Speak Dog workshop at Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre, (13 Camp Street). The workshop will run all day: 10am – 4pm. Learn to interpret what your dog is trying to tell you, and how best to handle them. This informative day will open your eyes (and ears) to help you better understand your furry friend. For more information and bookings go to ourneighbourhood.org.au or call 5348 3569

Wonderful WordsIn WinterTHE region’s annual Words in Winter Festival is now in its 12th year. The festival is a celebration of the written word and is held across many towns in the region throughout the entire month of August. This year Daylesford, Trentham, Clunes, Maryborough and Newstead are joining in the fun. The programs for each town are diverse and exciting. With well known authors speaking, events for kids, puzzles and word games, book sales, discussions, debates, poetry, song, readings and workshops popping up everywhere. Some highlights on the program include the Clever Town Crossword Challenge – eat a dictionary for breakfast and head over to your local library at 10am Saturday, August 1, and try and be the first town to figure out the Crossword for the (awesome) title of Cleverest Town! Sunday, August 16, in Clunes, award winning journo and former lawyer Liam Houlihan will discuss ‘Once Upon A Time In Melbourne’. His fourth book tells the stories of murder, corruption, denial and cover-ups that have hung over Melbourne’s police for the past decade. It promises to be a fascinating (and juicy) talk. Friday, August 7, at Perfect Drop, Daylesford, come and hear some of the finest songwriters in the region perform original tunes to the theme ‘This is our town’. Hear what it’s like to be a published crime writer – Sandi Wallace will read from her current release and share with the audience tips and knowledge about the journey of writing a crime novel, from the seed of an idea through to having it published and beyond. (Saturday, August 8, Grande Cabaret Club, Hepburn Springs, 12pm.) Or pop over to Newstead for a series of stories, discussions and scrabble at Welshmans Reef Vineyard. Family Day at the Daylesford Town Hall (Sunday, August 16) will be bigger than ever with a pop up planetarium. This is just the tiniest sample of what’s on offer - the full Words in Winter program features over 80 events across the five towns, with many events free. The full program is online at wordsinwinter.com or grab a copy at libraries and information centres everywhere.

Basket Weavingon a beach somewhereKNEE deep in icy mud, red nosed and wind chafed it’s natural to find yourself longing for Queensland this time of year. And sure, right now, as you sit there in your puffy Kathmandu jacket, exhaling steam and harbouring frostbite the beaches of QLD are baking in glorious sunshine. If you’re plotting your move north you’d better have a plan to make it viable. Basket weaving is a GREAT plan. Imagine, sitting on a beach, in naught but a sarong, weaving natural fibres to the rhythm of the ocean. (Um, just a moment… BRB, booking flights to Whitehaven.) Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19-21 Victoria Street) is hosting a basketry workshop Saturday, August 15, 10am-4pm. Use natural materials to create a coiled basket (Big enough for swimmers and a snorkel.) Cost $80 ($65 conc.) For more info (and a list of things to bring) go to creswicknc.org.au or call 5345 2356.

Ahhh! Kyneton Music Festival is hosting a 90s Social as a fundraiser for the 2016 festival. Saturday, August 15, you are invited to relive the night of the year! Build it…and they will growDEEPEST winter is an AWESOME time to get into the garden. (No, really!) Planning your spring and summer garden in winter means you’ll be planting in spring and not constructing and wrangling garden beds… It means you’ll be ahead of the game and harvesting spring and summer vegies sooner than you think! Diggers Club at The Garden of St. Erth (189 Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) is hosting a workshop on wicking beds. These garden beds are super water efficient and great for growing vegies in – plus they look great too. In the workshop (to be held Sunday, August 16, 11am – 12:30pm) you’ll learn how wicking beds work, and you’ll discuss some great ideas for wicking bed design and construction.Cost $39, (Diggers members $29) For more information and bookings go to diggers.com.au or call The Garden of St. Erth 5368 6514. (Bookings essential).

in NewsteadINTERNATIONALLY renowned seismologist Gary Gibson lives just up the road from here, and knows more than his fair share about earthquakes. Living in Central Victoria (thousands of kilometres from the closest tectonic plate boundary) you’d think the life of a seismologist here would be rather uneventful. Gary knows otherwise – and will talk all things earth shaking at a special Words in Winter event at Welshmans Reef Vineyard, (Maldon-Newstead Road Welshmans Reef) Saturday, August 15, from 2pm. We live in one of the most interesting volcanic and seismic regions on the planet (really truly)! In the past 50 years over 700 earthquakes have been recorded in this area! Most are unfelt, and are centred around the Muckleford Fault, near Castlemaine. There’s amazing stuff happening under our feet! Find our more at Gary’s fascinating presentation. Entry $5. for your Friday nightJust a Little Astrophysics

Y’know what happens in August? Science Week. And this year we’re more excited about it than Dr Karl, because there’s some truly awesome sciencey stuff happening in Daylesford as part of Science Week this year. Friday, August 21, Professor Orsola De Marco will present Pocket Astrophysics for Daily Life. Oh yes. Meet at Daylesford Town Hall and listen to fascinating stuff about Astrophysics – stuff like supernovas, nebulae, asteroids and life on other planets. At 6:30pm take a peek through telescopes up into the night sky above the Town Hall with the Bendigo and District Astronomical Society. This will then be followed by Prof De Marco’s presentation from 7pm. Her illustrated talk is suitable for kids (and adults!) from 8 years of age. Pocket Astrophysics is a free event. It will run as part of the Words in Winter program in conjunction with Science Week and Macquarie Uni. More info at wordsinwinter.com

MOST of us have a back yard… but how many of us have an actual garden? Well designed gardens are magical places. For many of us, our back yards are blank canvases just waiting to be whipped into some sort of Garden of Versailles… It’s possible! With a bit of thought and effort you can transform any patch of dirt into a beautiful garden. The gardeners at The Gardens of St Erth are often asked about garden design, so they’ve decided to host a workshop (Sunday, August 23, from 11am) on this very topic. Keith Edwards will explain the use of colour, structure, texture, in his design, whilst adding in a few food plants as well. You’ll learn the basics of garden design, learn about orientation, plant selection and what you’ll need to make it happen before you dig that hole for your first tree. Cost $39, (Diggers Members $29) For more info and bookings (essential) go to diggers.com.au or call 5368 6514.

Magical Musicand gorgeousnessTHIS region is well known for its general gorgeousness; historic buildings, fabulous local food and wine, fine arts and boutique shopping. So what could possibly make your visit to Daylesford more gorgeous? We have the answer… An evening with Australian singer and harpist Alana Conway at the Daylesford Town Hall. Yep. That. Alana will bring her amazing instrument and beautiful voice into town to play for us all - as part of her Town Hall Tour, Saturday, August 29. Alana will be playing favourites from her debut album Fields of Gold, including Hallelujah and Songbird and some new arrangements as well. Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) is the first stop on her tour. Tickets are $45 ($39.50 conc.) For more information and bookings go to alanaconway.com (While you’re there make sure you check out the videos on her website, she’s absolutely a young Australian talent to watch!)

Linguistic EvolutionEnglish ain’t EnglishYOU couldn’t run a festival of words without a Professor of Linguistics throwing in her two cents worth. (In the cleverest wordiest, wittiest way - of course.) This year Words in Winter is so thrilled to have prominent Australian Linguist Professor Kate Burridge discuss some recent developments in the English language, some good… some not so good. (if u no wot we r say’n m8) Kate is the current chair of Linguistics at Monash University, has written many books, is a regular on ABC Radio and has presented a brilliant TEDx talk on Euphemisms in English. With a little help from her audience Kate will talk about the changes to our language and together they’ll sort out the good, the bad, and the just plain ugly. (LOL) (Sorry.)Kate will present English Usage and Abusage Saturday, August 22, at Welshmans reef Vineyard, Maldon-Newstead Road, Welshmans Reef, from 2pm. Entry is $5. Open Gardens of GlenlyonWinter WonderlandsWE know we bang on about winter a bit. Okay, a lot. The weather really is such a big deal when you live here though… Yes, in the mist and fog winter is picturesque and magical, romantic and other-worldly, (and okay… freezing and muddy too, we’ll give you that) but if you’re a gardener you see winter as so much more. An avid gardener sees opportunity to prune, to prepare, to tuck those beds in nice and tight with mulch and to see what magic they can conjure with flowering winter plants (yes they exist) and vegetables. Winter is a busy time in the garden. They say summer bodies are made in winter, and the same can be said of a garden. Just takes a little toil, sweat, and effort in the cold outdoors. (Here’s the hot tip, gardeners also have rockin’ summer bodies.)On the weekend of Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30, five Glenlyon gardens will be open to the public to explore and inspire your inner gardener. Take a peek behind the fences of formal home gardens, and rambling bush estates. See what these clever green thumbs have been able to create in the depths of winter. Take in the architecture of well designed gardens and admire the bare bones and structure at their heart. Come along and see how these five different gardens address sustainability, diversity of soil in the region, microclimates, and different site locations. There will be loads of expert info, and plant and product sales at Glenlyon Hall all weekend. Saturday night have dinner at Glenlyon Hall with guest speaker Simon Rickard. Simon is a passionate gardener, botanical guide, author and muso. He has recently published Heirloom Vegetables: A Guide to their History and Varieties. The three course dinner is $45, 6:30pm for 7pm start, BYO drinks. Bookings essential. (Go to trybooking.com/IGMZ) Tickets to the open gardens are available from Glenlyon Hall all weekend. For more info go to gardensofglenlyon.blogspot.com or Glenlyon.vic.au
