SITUATION Lord’s Wood is situated on the outskirts of the Chiltern town of Marlow, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is well served with road and rail links with easy access via the M40 and M4 to the national motorway network and Marlow town centre with all the amenities it has to offer, including a comprehensive range of shops and excellent public houses, cafes and restaurants.

There is a wide range of both state and public schools in the area for all ages, including the renowned Sir William Borlase School in the town itself. Recreational facilities include golf, racing at Windsor and of course many river pursuits for rowing, kayaking and leisure craft.

HISTORY “An outpost of Old Bloomsbury in Marlow Woods” – was how Frances Partridge CBE (1900-2004), the accomplished writer and diarist, described Lord’s Wood in 1958. Frances was a close friend of James Strachey (1887-1967) and his wife Alix (1892-1973), the renowned psychoanalysts who spent much of their time translating Sigmund Freud’s work at Lord’s Wood and it was here that they also entertained many of the Bloomsbury Group, including James’s brother Lytton Strachey, artist Dora Carrington, Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Mark Gertler and the economist Maynard Keynes among others.

Lord’s Wood artistic heritage continued under David and Millie Messums stewardship and since 1974 the house and garden have undergone a transformation, the five acres surrounding the house becoming a showcase for sculpture, water features and extensive mature borders in varying styles. There are flower and herb gardens, a thriving orchard with beehives and chickens and woodland walks with spectacular views over the Chilterns.

Built in the style of Edwin Lutyens by architect Granville Streatfeild (1869-1947), the house has a Queen Anne style about it, built with local bricks and roofed with Westmorland slates.

Adjacent to the house is the large Studio where Mary Sargant Florence (1857-1954), mother of Alex and for whom the house was built, worked as a muralist. A plaque over the door reads “It was here that the cartoons were prepared for her frescos at Oakham & Bourneville colleges” and it was here also that the artist Stanley Spencer received tuition from Mary Sargant Florence on mural painting.

LORD’S WOOD A rare opportunity to purchase an historic Grade II Listed family home on the outskirts of the highly regarded riverside town of Marlow. Delightfully located in the Chiltern Hills, Lord’s Wood was built in 1899 and has been the present family’s home since 1974. The house retains many of the original features, which include high ceilings, classic cornicing, period fireplaces and elegant windows.

The ground floor comprises a very welcoming reception hall with a pillared archway to the main staircase. A fine drawing room has a feature wood carved fireplace with log burner, large bay windows overlooking the impressive garden plus French windows leading to the parterre garden. A hexagon shaped dining room, with open fireplace, fitted display units, parquet flooring and a large window overlooking the garden. There is a light and spacious kitchen/breakfast room with a range of painted wall and floor units, an Aga and a wood burning stove. Double doors lead onto the terraced area ideal for al fresco dining. There is a lobby with door to the outside, a boot room and stairs down to the cellar, ideal for storage.

There are also two double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a further double bedroom, upstairs utility room and a separate shower room with walk in shower and WC.

Up a staircase the second floor comprises three more double bedrooms, a single bedroom, hobby room and bathroom. An ideal area for teenagers.

GARDENS AND GROUNDS Lord’s Wood is accessed up a secluded tree lined avenue through an electric gate into the gravel driveway. There are extensive grounds which feature richly planted herbaceous borders, mature trees, yew tree hedging and topiary, a parterre garden planted with box, flagstone terrace, a formal garden mainly laid to lawn. A lightly wooded area leads onto a pergola walkway. This takes you to the wildflower meadows with wonderful views over the

Chilterns. A special kitchen garden houses an Alitex Greenhouse, a summerhouse, raised beds and a cutting garden. A lovely herb garden enclosed by yew hedges has a raised circular pond. A private area reached through a brick arch houses the outdoor swimming pool, sauna, shower and changing room. This is a splendid place for entertaining whilst taking in the wonderful garden.

THE STUDIO A second driveway leads to The Studio, which presently is being used as an art gallery studio/office. The front door leads into a large reception hall, with two cloakrooms and on to a large reception area with feature fireplace and wonderful arched sash window and an oak floor. This leads into a large, impressive gallery with a library/office off to one side.
