The apartment belonging to the principals of EHKA Studio is a triple treat of interconnectivity, practicality and simplicity.

It’s not uncommon for homebuyers to spend a few years waiting for their Built-to-Order (BTO) HDB flats to be completed before they actually move into their new home. For the most part, it presents some form of inconveniences, especially when the wait often stretches over three or four years. That many newlyweds with no existing homes of their own face this predicament hardly calls for rejoicing. But believe it or not, there are advantages that come with waiting a few years before a couple moves into their marital home, as Hsu Hsia Pin and Eunice Khoo of EHKA Studio would testify.

While waiting for their home at the Pinnacle@Duxton to be completed, the two architects stayed in a total of two rented apartments over four years. However, when it finally came time for them to design their own home, they were very familiar with their own living routines as a couple and knew exactly what they wanted: “We knew we wanted all the mess to be cleared away; we wanted open, connected spaces; we are very interested in bringing outdoor environments indoors,” says Hsia Pin.

The apartment is a four-room flat measuring a modest 95sqm. “The starting point wasn’t so much a style we liked but had more to do with how we wanted to use the space,” says Hsia Pin. The couple was clear on the fact that creating spaces that were not only connected, but could also overlap in terms of function was the way to go. For this to happen, walls had to be strategically cleared. And so the walls that originally closed in the kitchen and the study were removed. The result: more light throughout and cross-ventilation.
