SUMMER CAMP CONFERENCE & RETREAT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

New Centerville Parish - Wacky Bowling Team

Are Making a DifferenceYOU

VEvery year it is important that we share the story we are writingtogether. The 2018 Annual Report is our way of sharing with you theministry that is happening at Sequanota. It is a story that includes ahuge cast of characters including donors, partners, staff, volunteersand guests. The Sequanota staff can not accomplish what we doannually without volunteers and donors like you! Together we aremaking a difference in the lives of thousands of people, who camethrough the gate in 2018.

One of the ways we self check our work is through our evaluations of our campers. In 2018we designed a new tool to help us hear about the experiences we are creating. Here is asample of what we heard.

Here are the percentages of our campers who agreed with each statement.93% felt loved while at camp.91% felt they grew in their faith in God.95% had fun.95% felt safe.91% tried something new.97% feel camp is well kept.93% had a great week.93% want to come back in 2019.

In a world where the church is struggling to know how or what to do in faith formation weare making a difference. Our campers and guests receive authentic hospitality through ourwarm welcome, prepared & clean facility and servant hearted staff. Faith formation for thefuture needs to be rooted in guiding others to become a more loving version of themselves.Sequanota makes this our focus every summer. We strive to be a community of love. A placewhere campers, volunteers, guests and staff experience God’s love through our meals, worship, and play time. This is what it means to be a disciple of Christ in the 21st century.Thank you for stepping up and making a difference in this unique ministry!

Why ChooseSEQUANOTA

r

Summer camp promotescommunity. It nurtures a sacred placewhere kids learn to live together andcare for one another. Camp is a placewhere kids can “practice” growing upby strengthening their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive muscles awayfrom their immediate family. Camp provides a laboratory for childhood explorations to happen.

When I was in elementary school I lived in a small town. What made this place so cool washaving 6-8 other young boys around to play kick ball, hide and seek, and build forts outside. Weformed a community. We did not always get along in our playing. Sometimes fights would breakout, but we had to sort these problems out if we wanted to keep playing. We learned conflictmanagement and communication. We grew in trust with each other. We taught each other newskills and celebrated our successes together. This neighborhood community helped me grow inself confidence and built character.

In today’s world studies show our children stay inside more, are less physical, and haveincreased anxiety in their lives. They are losing that sense of neighborhood that many of us wereblessed to experience in our safe, small hometown. At Sequanota, we recognize the value ofcommunity and strive for each camper to be welcomed into our intentional, Christian community.

Being in community at camp helps kids learn to solve problems. As we live into the futurethere will be plenty of challenges that will need solutions. Camp helps the next generation ofproblem solvers to relate, connect, and inspire. These skills are as important as math andscience. It will do no one any good if our solved problems are locked away in the minds of youngadults, who are anxious communicating what they know.

Another piece of the community at camp is the naturalsetting. Time in the forest has been proven to reduce stress by10% simply by taking a walk and breathing in the forest air.Camp provides a place where campers can explore the naturalworld around, learn how their actions can make an impact -good or bad, and discover their place alongside all of creation.

I hope this summer you might give camp a try and watchhow the wonder and care of the camp community can make adifference and shape the life of your loved ones. Camp doeskids a world of good.

One of the biggest projects was the replacement ofthe bridge over Picking’s Run on the main road intocamp. The bridge was beginning to erode away dueto spring flooding and storm damage. The newbridge will continue to make our guests comingsand goings safe for another 40 years.

The waste water treatment plant received upgrades and renovations to assist us in meetingour guests needs while continuing to be good stewards of this natural place.

What is the differencebetween Hosted Ministryand Program Ministry?

Hosted Ministry = groups that use Sequanota's facilities, butSequanota is not part of planning the content of the event.Program Ministry = events that Sequanota directly oversees, plans, and executes, often with the help of great volunteers.
