Update from Mr Brown I love this term, it is full of optimism and excite-ment – we start off with children feeling really grounded and at home in their classrooms (after all they have had a full term now to settle in) and we end up with the wonderful wide eyed, ‘can’t sleep’ excitement of Christmas and the promise of our Nativity and Christmas concert. On Wednesday we invited Ali from Egyptology in Schools to work with Year 6 for our Egyptian WOW day. We covered so many things from hieroglyphs to Egyptian maths to Gods and the afterlife. The children al-so dressed up in fantastic ancient Egyptian costume – the staff too! Some of the children from Thames and Mississippi class have written about our day: Egyptian WOW day! (Thames) On our Egyptian wow day, we learnt lots of interesting facts about the Ancient Egyptians. Firstly, we learnt how to translate Hieroglyphics (Egyptian writing) and how to write our names. In Egyptian history there was a big stone with Hieroglyphics on that is called the Rosetta Stone. This is how Egyp-tologists learnt how to translate Egyptian writing into English. After break, we took some time to learn Egyptian numbers. They did not use numbers like we do, they used different signs. For example, 10 was a bridge and a swirl was 100. Then, we had a go at using the numbers ourselves to Ancient Egyptian BINGO! However, instead of shouting the word ‘bingo’ you had to shout out ‘HOWIE’ – the Ancient Egyptian word for rejoice. The final part of the day, was all about Egyptian monsters and gods. Our Egyptologist told us a grue-some yet interesting story about ‘Seth’, the evil god and ‘Isis’, ‘Nepsis’, ‘Osiris’ and ‘Horus’, the good gods. The story says that Seth threw a party and trapped his brother Osiris in a golden tomb and chucked him in the River Nile never to be seen again. Osiris sister, Isis was devastated when she found out and went a dangerous journey to find him. She travelled many ways across the land until she finally reached a far off land where Osiris was supposedly held. Eventually, she took the tomb back to her land. Osiris became the god of the underworld because he could not be revived. We made our own underworld monsters related to this story. This was a wonderful experience and a great wow day! Josh & Ruby

Egyptian WOW Day! (Mississippi) The first thing we learnt about was hieroglyphs. We wrote our names on bookmarks how ancient Egyp-tian gods carve their names into obelisk (pillars in English) it was tricky but fun. We learnt more hieroglyphs but in maths. We played bingo but you had to find the answers to the ques-tions. Every group had different questions. At the end you would pick the answers out of a bag without looking and if you got the answer to one of your questions you would get a counter. The first group to get five counters wins! After lunch we were recounted a story about Egyptian gods; it was very interesting. Our favourite part of the day was this because we learnt about many Gods eg. Anubis, Horus and Seth. The last thing we did in the day was making up our own afterlife Egyptian monster. We had to merge three animals together to make an animal that would guard the afterlife test and if they failed they would get eaten by the animals. Ali also brought lots of real artefacts. 15 people at a time would go up and look at the ancient artefacts. There was one that you couldn’t touch because it would cause the artefact to decay because it was made out of bronze. By Nathan, Lydia and Max.

Well done to Michael in Thames class for winning the Howard Carter award for the day. Ali was

very impressed with your knowledge!

SCHOOL NEWS

Lunchtimes at Longwell Green We are always looking to improve the children’s experiences and enjoyment at Longwell Green Primary School. Our focus, this term, is on creating a calm and relaxed dining room environment with an emphasis on behaviour, where children can eat together, eat better and engage in good conversation and show kindness to each other. With this in mind, we have linked Golden Time on Friday afternoons to behaviour in the lunch hall. Children observing the lunchtime rules will be commended for their behaviour and re-warded by participating in Golden Time on Fridays in their classrooms. Golden Time will have a theme each week and children can bring games from home into school if they wish. The themes are as follows: Friday 9th November 2018 – board games Friday 16th November 2018 – card games Friday 23rd November 2018 – construction games Friday 30th November 2018 – imaginative role-play Friday 7th December 2018 - number games/puzzles Friday 14th December 2018 - pencil and paper games Friday 21st December 2018 - colouring Whilst we are looking forward to celebrating all the positive behaviour we see in school, we will also be speaking to children, who are not always polite and respectful to others including peers and staff mem-

bers. These children will meet with Mrs Dawson and Mr Brown during Golden Time and will be involved in helpful activities to re-inforce the importance of good behaviour.

Walk to School This Wednesday we had an exciting assembly! Cath-erine from Living Streets came in to talk to the chil-dren about the benefits of actively travelling to school. Training was given to WOW monitors for each class to record on our Daily Tacker System. They also got to meet Strider who is so pleased that the children will bring trying to achieve their badges each month. Strider will be visiting again soon to meet children at the gate at the end of a school day and see how they are doing! Be Seen and Be Safe now it's darker this time of year. Norovirus and Winter Bugs With the season approaching where bugs can spread let's remember our best defence. The best thing to do is have good hygiene. Always wash your hands after visiting the toilet and before eating. Catch it! Bin it! Kill it! Coughs and sneezes are best caught -in a tissue. -put straight into a bin Coughs and Sneezes go Sleevies! This means when you do not have a tissue with you coughs and sneezes should go to the inside of your elbow. We do open doors, pick up pencils, touch anything with our hands, but we do not use the inside of our elbows. This way we reduce the spread. Please avoid coughing and sneezing into hands as it spreads germs so much more rapidly. Please remind your children. Mrs George
