One of the reasons God has called us to gather together regularly is that we are so forgetful. We forget who God is and endeavor to live based on our own merit and strength. We forget who we are and the empiri- cal evidence that we lay down every day of our desperate need for redeeming grace. We forget how broken is the world in which we live, so we live with unrealistic expectations and naïveté toward temptation. We forget how magnif- icent our resources are in Christ, how complete his provision is, and how precious it is that he is always near. We forget how wise, encour- aging, protective, and freeing God’s Word is. We forget our need for the body of Christ; that our spiritual life is meant to be a group project. We forget that we have not only been blessed to be recipi- ents of God’s grace, but have been called to be tools of that grace in the lives of others. We forget that there really is an enemy who prowls around to devour us spiritually. We forget that life can never be found in the physical creation. We forget that we have been created to live for a glory that is bigger than our own and for a kingdom that is greater than what we would construct on our own. Yes, we need to gather again and again, and through worship, preaching, and mutual fellowship, to remember what we would other- wise forget.” (Tripp, Paul David. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Heavenly Father, we grieve the many expressions of our self-centeredness. Forgive us for overspending on ourselves and under-sharing with others; for being generous with criticism and miserly with forgiveness; for crying “victim” more readily than we cry “Abba.” Have mercy on us, Lord; have mercy on me. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

(Adapted from Scotty Smith Every Season Prayers: Gospel-Centered Prayers for the Whole of Life)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON “In [Jesus Christ] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace!” Ephesians 1:7

Pastor: Know that in Jesus Christ, God embraces you, forgives you, and strengthens you to live a renewed life. All: Thanks be to God!

Before the Throne of God Above

Before the throne of God above, I have a strong and perfect plea; A great High Priest whose name is love who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on His hands, my name is written on His heart; I know that while in heaven He stands, no tongue can bid me thence depart. No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair and tells me of the guilt within; Upward I look and see Him there who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died my sinful soul is counted free; For God, the Just, is satisfied to look on Him and pardon me. To look on Him and pardon me.

Behold Him there! The risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless, Righteousness. The Great unchangeable I Am, the King of Glory and of Grace; One with Himself I cannot die, my soul is purchased by His blood; My life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ my Savior and my God. With Christ my Savior and my God.

Hallelujah! My life is found in Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! For I am His, and He is mine.

SONG OF ILLUMINATION

*Your Words of Life

As we gather, come and teach us. Spirit, come and speak today. You delight to lead and guide us. It's Your Word that lights the way.

(So come,) awaken our hearts, illumine our minds; magnify Jesus Christ. Come, renewing our faith, changing our lives with Your words of life.

SERMON LESSON Acts 2:42, Matthew 11:25-30 Shelley Kral

SERMON “Shaped into Learning People”

Why all the standing and sitting? Scripture, especially in the Psalms, highlights various postures of worship--physical positions of the body that are both symbols of our heart's inner disposition and aids in helping us focus amidst distractions. Standing is a posture of honor, fitting for things like singing hymns and hearing the Bible read. Sitting is one way to express reverence and submission, just as we would bow our heads or our whole bodies, and it is a fitting posture for things like confession and listening to teaching from the Bible.

*All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name

Who am I that the highest King Would welcome me? I was lost but He brought me in; Oh, His love for me. Oh, His love for me! Who the Son sets free, oh, is free indeed! I'm a child of God, yes, I am!

Free at last! He has ransomed me. His grace runs deep. While I was a slave to sin, Jesus died for me. Yes, He died for me! Who the Son sets free, oh, is free indeed! I'm a child of God, yes, I am! In my Father's house, there's a place for me. I'm a child of God. Yes, I am!

I am chosen, not forsaken. I am who You say I am. You are for me, not against me. I am who You say I am. I am chosen, not forsaken. I am who You say I am. You are for me, not against me. I am who You say I am. I am who You say I am.

Who the Son sets free, oh, is free indeed! I'm a child of God. Yes, I am! In my Father's house, there's a place for me. I'm a child of God. Yes, I am!

The Lord at Work. During this part of our service we are reminded that while on Sundays we exist as ‘the church gathered’, the rest of the week we exist as ‘the church scattered’. God is alive and at work through each of us as we journey with God in our daily lives. By highlighting important events in the life of our faith family, we seek to connect all that goes on throughout the week to the Living God working in and through all who are part of our worshipping community.
