School Notices… Rose Vannini recently won a national writing competition. She was given a story starter, about Anika and Levi at Te Papa and how they found themselves inside a Moa exhibit and was asked to finish the story. Here is what Rose wrote…..

Anika turned painfully to look. They were sitting in a huge forest that couldn't have been there. The exhibit was only about the size of their classroom back in ???? But that wasn't the worst of it. stalking towards them through the trees was a Moa, but not a stuffed Moa. A real living, breathing Moa. Anika had always thought Moa were beautiful big birds with their Amber eyes and huge feathers when she had seen them in museums. But with this one charging at her, it suddenly looked more like a cross between a monstrous giraffe and a chicken on drugs and was looking right at them with its creepy Amber eyes. “Can we run now?” Whimpered Levi. He looked absolutely terrified. This Moa shouldn't be alive! But it was, very much so. The Moa raised its head and let out a deafening “caaaaa!”

Anita stumbled backwards but She wasn't going anywhere thanks to her stupid foot. The Moat trampled plants and bushes under its massive clawed feet as it came closer. “Caaaaa!” It screeched again.

Just as it looked like the children were done for the door reappeared in the wall and a man with a wild grey beard and even more wild grey eyes stepped in. “What are you moaning about bird?!” He growled. Then he saw Levi and Anika and froze. “Hello kids,” he leered “you'd better come with me. “Bird take them!” he said to the Moa, and it grabbed their t-shirts in its beak and stomped off after him, not back out the door, not that it would fit, but deeper into the forest. “Welcome,” said the old man, “to my humble office.”

“Caaa!” Called the Moa. “Shut up,” Said the old man. “Who are you?!” Anika yelled, “put us down!”

“I am the brilliant scientist Professor Citrius.” Said the old man

“Who?” Asked Levi. “Don't tell me you have never heard of me?”

“Nope.” Said Anika, trying to disguise her fear. “Bah! Ignorant children these days!”

“He's completely bonkers,” Anika said to Levi, who seemed to be frozen in shock. Out of all the people to be captured by a madman and a Moa with it had to be him. Just as Anika was trying to think of an escape plan Professor Citrius cried. “Here we are! Home sweet home!

The professor's idea of ‘home sweet home looked just like all the rest of the forest to Anika. “drop them bird!” He shouted. Anika was surprised when the Moa placed them gently on the ground. One day I will rule the world using birds like this as my minions.” He said, more to himself than anyone else. “You can't do that,” cried Levi speaking for the first time since they arrived “we’ll warn people, this Moa should be dead!”

“Oh don't worry, you won't be doing that. I didn't spend years creating a gap in time for my plans to be foiled by two inter-fering children,” “I shall rule the world!” “Bird you may have your dinner!”

The Moa didn't move. “Didn't you hear me? Eat the-” “Chomp!” The Moa swallowed the professor in one bite. “Nobody likes being bossed around,” said Anika to the Moa “we understand that, come with us.”

Room Eiffelton Holiday recounts…

In Eiffelton we have written some holiday recounts with a twist. The children had to recount two true events that happened during their holidays and one false recount that didn’t hap-

pen. Can you guess which one is fact or fiction?

In the holidays I got new calves. I named one Orange Patch and my other one Bloodshot

because it has a bloodshot eye.

In the holidays my two lambs Chocolate and Coco died of bloat.

In the holidays the last calf

was born. It is healthy.

By Liam Lash

In the holidays I went to Orana park to go and feed the giraffes with some willow.

In the holidays my neighbours cow called Willow jumped the fence so we had to put her with the

lambs.

In the holidays I went swimming at the EA net-works centre.

By Tayla Keeley

In the holidays I went kayaking at the Whites and Tabitha and I stood up in our kayak and

nearly fell out.

In the holidays I pitched the tent on the front lawn and slept in it for the night. I had a

midnight feast.

In the holidays I went horse trekking at Peel Forest. The horses that I rode were called Tommy, Debbie,

Ziggy, Woody and Torque.

By Kate Macdonald

In the holidays I had a generation doll party and ate icing out of a bowl.

In the holidays I went to Wellington and saw a pup-py that looks like Minnie at the beach.

In the holidays it was my Nana's birthday. We drove down to Timaru and had pavlo-

va cake.

By Sierra Mccall In the holidays I went to Akaroa and saw two wood pigeons in a tree. After that we did a bush

walk.

In the holidays I went fishing with my family in Akaroa and Hayley caught a big perch.

In the holidays I went to the

pool and it was warm.

By Alyssa Skevington

In the holidays I played on my scooter.

In the holidays Zander came over and we played together.

In the holidays I walked down the street to the fish and chip

shop.

School Notices…

Longbeach School are currently looking for anyone who lives in (or is involved with) our community who would be willing to help at this year's Longbeach Coastal Challenge. We are desperately seeking volunteers to help out on race day, Sunday 25th November. This is the school's biggest fundraiser of the year and last year we were lucky enough to receive a cheque for $22 500.00. The other half of the proceeds go to the Hinds Lions. This directly benefits our children and the wider community. We are so lucky to be involved in this, however we need more support to make it a success. Are you able to spare a couple of hours on Sunday 25th November? We are looking for help with the BBQ, race marshals and the food tent. If you are able to help please contact the school on 03 302-6643 or email [email protected]

COUNTRY DAY THANKS!!! What another fantastic Country Day we had on Monday! The weather wasn’t it’s best but we managed to dodge most of it and we all had a blast. The children and their families put in a huge amount of effort preparing their indoor exhibits- the judges had a hard time selecting from all the quality entries. A huge thank you to all the wonderful ladies for giving up their time to support our day! Another highlight for all the children is always the Young Farmer activities! Some got damper than others but everyone had a great time…throwing sponges at cans (or maybe parents), jumping hay bales, throwing gumboots, bob the apple, wheelbarrow races and so many more awesome activities. A huge thank you goes to John O’Connell for rallying all the Dads, and co-ordinating the activities. It was wonderful to see all our Dads out there supporting this event, so thank you! Once again in the afternoon we had our pets visit, in amongst the usual chaos the children loved showing their pets to their friends. A great big thank you to our pet judges who helped support the school staff with the judging- your expertise are much appreciated by us all! Thank you also to the Home & School who organised the morning tea for our school staff, Dads and judges. This is a well needed cuppa and is much appreciated! Thank you to those who supported our Year 4 camp fundraiser BBQ for lunch. So, thank you to everyone involved in our Country Day! The children are very lucky to be able to experience such a fabulous day. Thank you again Longbeach School staff
