Description
SummaryA large part of this picturesque stage runs along theleft
bank of the River Soa, before turning away fromthe river towards
the end of this stage. The routethen leads up to the delightful
village of Drežnicanear Kobarid.
DescriptionOur hike takes us past the romantic Virje waterfallto
the magical world of Narnia: The Bovec Valley , anatural and
cultural heritage, once served as thesetting for part of the Walt
Disney film “TheChronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”. Near
themajestic Boka waterfall, hundreds of cubic metres ofwater dash
deep into the valley from a height of 106metres. Then we follow the
emerald green RiverSoa, on which keen canoeists and rafters take it
inturns to tackle the rapids, around the PolovnikMountain. After a
slight ascent we reach themountain village of Drežnica, below the
KrnMountain.
Starting point / trailheadBovec
Turn-by-turn directionsWe start in Bovec, walk past the church
of St. Ulrichand then head uphill to the village of Plužna.
AfterPlužna we pass the Virje waterfall and a small lake.Once we
have passed a small golf course we canmarvel at the largest
waterfall in Slovenia – Boka.
After crossing the bridge we turn right up on a trail,that leads
to several other view points on thewaterfall, but before reaching
them we turn lefttowards Žaga vilage. When we cross the bridge
overUja river, we descend the stears left down and folowthe path
pass Žaga vilage to Srpenica, where wecross the longest hanging
bridge in Slovenia (63 m)called Lipuc. Then we procede along the
gravel roadto the small village of Trnovo ob Soi, which is alsothe
main “getting off” point for the popular rafttours. Along the way
there are several spots wherewe can simply climb down to the river
for a shortbreak and refreshment.
We could make our hike more exciting by rafting forpart of the
route, to be precise the section betweenthe bridge beneath the Boka
waterfall and thevillage of Trnovo. The Soa is always
impressiveanyway, but the nearer we get to it, the more of
animpression this roaring river makes!
In Trnovo we can cross to the other side of the riverfor a cup
of coffee or other refreshment in the campor in the village.
Afterwards we return to the left-hand bank which continues slightly
uphill along theforest trail to Drežnica, a pleasant and
hospitablemountain village.
Author´s adviceThe most widely known cultural artefacts of
theregion are the unique Drežnica Masks made ofwood. Locals still
follow tradition and organizecarnival festivities, which faithfully
recreate themasks’ ancient usage.

The village of Drežnicaalso prides itself on quite afew private
collections, among which is the mostattractive Botognice
Collection, compiled by MirkoKurini and dedicated to World War
I.
Kobarid is a pleasant little town, 5 km out ofDeržnica, that
gained recognition during the FirstWorld War.The story of the
town's history and primarily of theSoa or Isonzo Front is told in
the Kobarid Museum,voted best museum of Europe in 1993. The
exhibits,the large reliefs of the surrounding mountains, therich
photographic material and mlutivisionprojections offer a sensitive
narrative of those hardand bloody days near the Soa. Part of the
eventsconnected to the Soa Front were described in hisfamous novel
A Farewell to Arms by then Americanwar correspondent Ernest
Hemingway.The Kobarid historical walk is fascinating
andinstructive, leading us through time and the naturalbeauties of
the surrounding environment.
