As a result of its continued success the museum has undergone a series of expansion projects, the most recent of which was partially funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. In the early 1990’s BuroHappold Engineering began a programme of work at the museum by creating a new mezzanine level which allowed the trains to be lifted from the ground floor. The next phase of works provided a new mezzanine above the previous 1990’s floor and a new lecture theatre seating 180 people, with basement formed by underpinning adjacent basement walls. The ground floor was also adapted to support the 30 tonne train exhibits. BuroHappold also improved the environmental conditions of the space, including the control of daylight levels let into the museum through its glass rooflight. This was achieved by utilising an ‘over roof’ above the existing glazed rooflight and incorporating photovoltaic panels into the structure. The modifications were aimed at improving the general circulation, flexibility and environmental performance of the exhibition space as well as increasing the size of the exhibition area. It was important to provide cost effective solutions that were buildable within the existing space and that either reduced or eliminated modifications to the historic fabric of the building. Additional constraints were also imposed by programming requirements, to reduce the time the museum was closed and minimise disturbance to the Theatre Museum below.
