David prepares to take a city tour on The London Helicopter.

Welcome, Bienvenue, Welkom, Willkommen, Bienvenido, Benvenuto...Winter of cially turns to spring this month and as blooms, buds and blossoms begin to emerge around the capital, this is the perfect time to head over to Chiswick House for its colourful Camellia Festival (p. 38). Its rather a big month for festivals, with everything from amenco dancing to Russian culture to discover (p. 10-14). And Id always recommend seeing iconic sights like the Tower Of London and The Shard. These days you can experience them on foot, by bus and boat, or even y over them in a helicopter (p. 38). Your adventure starts here. Enjoy!

Germanys George Frideric Handel is famous for his Baroque operas and songs including the exquisite Messiah. Whats less known is that he lived and worked in London from 1712, so theres no better place to pay homage. The city continues to serve him with a pool of extraordinary performers, says Laurence Cumming, festival Musical Director, whos secured names like Europes La Nuova Musica (above, 12 Mar) for the event. Other highlights range from the opera Arianna In Creta (3-6 Mar) at the Royal College of Music, to the annual Handel Singing Competition (18 Mar) at St. Georges, Hanover Square (Handels local parish church). In Russia and the Ukraine, Maslenitsa is famous as a celebration marking both Lent and an ancient festival of the sun. Meanwhile, here in London once a year, the family-friendly Russian Maslenitsa festival in Trafalgar Square promises fabulous dance and music performances with styles ranging from classical to pop, as well as jazz and traditional folk. Younger visitors will enjoy its childrens programme, featuring the interactive Theatre Chudaki and a range of fun activities linked to the recent Sochi Winter Games. Visitors can also browse food stalls galore, tucking into traditional Eastern European cuisine like borscht, then wander around the gorgeous arts and crafts fair. Mayor Boris Johnson says, Londons Maslenitsa celebrations are a sure sign that spring is on its way, so put on your sunniest face and come along. The Sunday event runs from 1.30pm-7pm. English pancakes are a type of crpe, usually served quite simply, with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of sugar. dessert, consisting of a mixture of strawberries, pieces of meringue and cream, got its name from the famous Eton College in Berkshire, where it has been served at its annual cricket game against Harrow School since the 19th century. A popular myth is that the Eton Mess was born when a dog accidentally sat on a strawberry pavlova, and the only way it could be salvaged was to serve it as a crushed meringue dessert. In fact, sh and chips are not entirely the invention of the British, with deep-fried sh being introduced to Britain in the 17th century by Jewish refugees arriving from Portugal and Spain. The chip, meanwhile, can be traced back to 17th-century Belgium and France, but the combination of the two was a British idea. Many believe that sh and

chips were sold by Jewish immigrant, Joseph Malin, in east London in 1860. According to Professor John Walton (author of Fish And Chips And The British Working Class), the dish kept spirits up during World War II, as ministers ensured it was never rationed. Try it yourself at Mr Fish (p. 87), The Seashell (p. 88), and many London pubs.

    %",/+&0%016Cornwalls national dish,

the Cornish pasty (a savoury pie lled with minced beef, onion, potato and swede) became

commonplace in the 16th-17th centuries, when local tin miners wives hit on the idea of wrapping their husbands lunch in a baked pastry case, shaped so it could easily be held with one hand and eaten on the job. Look out for branches of British company the Cornish Bakehouse and its award-winning handmade pasties straight from Cornwall, on sale at outlets across the city including on Oxford Street.

    +$"/0+!0%Bangers and Mash is a

quintessential British favourite, a hearty serving of sausages

and creamy mashed potato, smothered in onion gravy. Though mostly associated with World War II, as a cheap and lling meal for the working classes, it actually originates as far back as 1912. The name bangers derives from when sausages were rationed during the war; it was cheaper to make them with a high water content, so if cooked carelessly, they were likely to explode under the heat and cause a bang. The comforting dish can be found in most English pubs and gastropubs, including The Eagle (p. 88).

A brief historyOnce an industrial area, Camden Town is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in north London, thanks to its famous markets, Camden High Streets clothes shops and its world-famous arts venue the Roundhouse, which this month is home to CircusFest (p. 58). Bruce Robinsons iconic British lm Withnail And I (1987) cemented Camdens fame as a hub for British counter-culture.

Famous residentsCamden Town has attracted a cross-section of literary heavyweights over the centuries including the likes of Charles Dickens, author Beryl Bainbridge and award-winning playwright Alan Bennett. In recent years, it has become associated with singer Amy Winehouse, who frequented many of the pubs in the area.

You could visit the Hawley Arms on

Castlehaven Road and raise a glass to her memory. Camden Town has been associated with rock and pop for many years as bands like Blur, The Pogues and Madness all formed, thanks to the areas vibrant music scene.

Best for new bandsYou can still discover new bands and emerging talent at many of its pubs, bars and specialist music venues.

Start at The Bar y, a well-known venue showcasing new indie, metal and rock acts. This month catch Mali cent (7 Mar), Damn Dice (13 Mar) and Bona de (18 Mar).

    Great for big names

Another brilliant venue is The Jazz Cafe, which has built up a reputation for staging the best in soul, jazz and R&B

over the years and features many already famous names. March highlights include 70s rock veterans Wishbone Ash (2 Mar), 80s rapper Grandmaster Flash (27-28 Mar) and Toyah (29 Mar).

    Shopping

Camden Market is a hotspot for the latest trendy clothes, plus vintage and alternative fashion (punk, goth, rock). Its actually a collection of smaller markets, each with its own avour. For instance, nd antiques and food stalls at its Stables Market area. You can pick up a reasonably priced lunch falafel, pizza, Chinese, Indian and more. Alternatively, nd local arts and crafts at Camden Lock Market, and other pockets of market stalls right along Camden High Street.

The canal The Regents Canal, built in the 19th century to

transport goods by boat, ows through Camden. An amble along its paths is a pleasant way to spend the day. For a different perspective on Camden Town, stroll along it to destinations such as ZSL London Zoo (p. 32), and Primrose Hill, with its great panoramic views of the city.

Finally bursting out of teenage bedrooms, comic books are now very much in the mainstream. Three of 2013s top 10 grossing movies came from comic-book characters (Iron Man, Superman and Thor). But if you need further evidence that comics have well and truly come of age, head to ExCeL London, where more than 10,000 fans will gather for the London Super Comic Convention (15-16 Mar). Pausing only to accept a free hug in the hallway, you enter a

vast space packed with comics, toys and merchandise. Wander down Artist Alley, where you can pick up original drawings or get comics signed; or sit in on a Q&A session with more than 30 top comic creators like Howard Chaykin and Mark Buckingham. But the undoubted highlight will be the inaugural London Super Cosplay Competition, judged by make-up expert Riki LeCotey and professional cosplayer Yaya Han. When I started cosplaying, says LeCotey, pinching herself

at how the movement has taken off, aided by the Syfy docu-series Heroes Of Cosplay, no famous cosplayers were invited. Though fans make their own outts, the demented Jokers and stern-faced Batman clones look slick enough to have stepped off the silver screen. Truly, the geeks will inherit the earth. • We painters take the same liberties as poets and madmen. So said 16th-century Renaissance painter Paolo Veronese, in response to early criticism that his works were too opulent. Yet it was this decorative style and vibrant colouring (as above, in The Conversion Of Mary Magdalene) that became his trademark. The rst monographic show of the artist ever to be held in the United Kingdom, the National Gallerys Veronese: Magnicence In Renaissance Venice (p. 56) displays 50 works, ranging from altarpieces to allegorical paintings. Born in Verona, Veronese moved to Venice, where

he was trained by a local craftsman. Initially inuenced by the colouring used by Titian, Veroneses earlier work was reective of the Mannerism movement, which focused on intellectual sophistication and the articial. He became fascinated by the splendour of 16th-century Venice, and depicted incredible feasts, lavish clothes, and scenes of aristocratic life, culture, fun and pleasure. The breathtaking works on display include Allegories Of Love, a series of four paintings each focusing on a different theme unfaithfulness, scorn, respect and happy union as well as mythological paintings of the 1560s and 1570s, which

he sold to international clients, such as two paintings bought for Philip IV by Velzquez. Although successful during his lifetime, Veroneses inuence was not recognised until after his death. But his legacy lives on in the works of great artists such as Peter Paul Rubens and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Director of the National Gallery, Dr Nicholas Penny, comments: From the deftly captured shimmer of a pearl, to the sweep and splendour of his architectural settings, Veroneses mastery of colour, space and light, and his feeling for beauty, for opulence and grace, have captured the imagination of countless artists and art lovers ever since.

Iconic artist Richard Hamilton is considered the founding father of the Pop Art movement that took Britain (and later, America) by storm in the 1950s. Hamilton often made use of brash imagery to reference aspects of popular culture and consumerism, as seen in his Interior II (pictured above). This month, witness two of his large-scale installation pieces at the ICA (p. 56) or visit the retrospective at Tate Modern (p. 57) to learn more about his work and life.
