The ‘70s were heavily sprinkled throughout the London shows, and in less subtle interpretations than in New York. TOPSHOP UNIQUE and FELDER FELDER went traditional, favoring jumpsuits, long vests and flares. BURBERRY PRORSUM and MATTHEW WILLIAMSON highlighted the importance of teal within maxi skirts and ponchos. JONATHAN SAUNDERS opted for the psychedelic, presenting vivid, almost dizzy prints with clashing palettes, while ROKSANDA was theatrical, with bolts of irregular colorblocking.

Leave it to London to embrace the decades. MOTHER OF PEARL mixed grungy florals, wallpaper prints and sporty trim, while PREEN BY THORNTON BREGAZZI went super active, mixing a crop top with low-slung pants. MARQUES’ALMEIDA and MCQ ALEXANDER MCQUEEN brought in denim-on-denim looks in light and medium washes that were both tomboy and a bit feme. L.A.M.B and LE KILT played with school girl plaids, reminiscent of a grungier Cher Horowitz of Clueless fame.

The gilded age is back and head-to-toe metallic shine is in. FELDER FELDER, MARKUS LUPFER and MCQ ALEXANDER MCQUEEN all looked sporty and directional, making statements in metallic match sets. TEMPERLEY LONDON and MOTHER OF PEARL were on-trend, showing outwear and dresses in copper, the hot new metallic for the season. And ERDEM simply dazzled, utilizing needle-punch to blend wblack wool with a rococo jacquard.

Couture-worthy capes are proving they’re well suited for combating fall’s chill. MULBERRY, SIMONE RO-CHA and GILES experimented with prints and patterns, the latter looking the most dramatic in a comb of black and white with ruffle trim. BURBERRY PRORSUM introduced a fur version with double-breasted fastening for an extra polished edge. ORLA KIELY’S classic style with storm flaps and a peter pan collar was well-mannered and feminine.

Fringe has moved away from just a small detail on trimmed bags and kimonos to the It adoration on all that sways. Used extensively at TOM FORD and BURBERRY PRORSUM, it decked out entire suede coats, skirts and dresses. At ISSA, fringe was finer and graced the side of celebrity-worthy dresses. BELLSTAFF used it on patchwork knits with fringed shoulders, while TOGA went for an allover top and skirt. VIVI-ENNE WESTWOOD RED LABEL brought interest from the bottom up with pull-on knitted fringe socks.
