Mayura Park, Cagranegara/Mataram, Lombok 2010

Built and laid out in 1744 by Raja Anak Agung Ngurah, Balinese Raja of

Karangasem (Bali) and Mataram (Lombok). Mataram was his residence. The

open building, pendopo, in the centre of the picture was a court of justice as

well as an official meeting hall. From> Travelbalilombok.wordpress. I lost my

own photos.

Mayura Park, and vicinity, in Cagranegara was the area where the Dutch

colonial army had a rough time in August 1894. The Balinese resistance, with

modern arms, was overwhelming. Later that year the Dutch came back and

their victory was complete: amidst loud applause of the locals, the Lombok the

subSasaks.

This gallery is meant to supplement my article “The Lombok Expedition 1894”.

Narmada Park is located ten kilometres east from Ma yura Park / Pura (Temple) Meru, right from the main road to Labuhan Lombok. Narmada Park is a sort of water palace, It used to be a (water) puri (palace) laid out by A nak Agung Gede Ngurah, a Balinese

Raja of Karangasem-Mataram (see picture page 1). Th e puri was built in 1727. The name Narmada was chosen because of its Hindu origin and means something like

“unknown water”. Narmada was built for pleasure as well as for worshipping Hindu Saints, the God Shiva f.e.. Photo Dirk Teeuwen, 200 2.

The original coloured school plate (a big one), a picture by J. Hoynck van

Papendrecht (1858-1933), is part of the author’s personal collection. However,

is was more practical to adapt a rather vague picture from Wikipedia and to

reset it into black and white, after sharpening.
