Scavella Sunsets: 7:50 p.m. |Volume 20, Number 32 | August 8, 2015 CONSIDER SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Allow me to make an audacious statement about the state of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) education today. Seventh-day Adventist Education system is without question one of the best and most effective systems in the world today. Seventh-day Adventist schools have taken the best and the worst students and moved them beyond the expectations of parents, friends and enemies. Students who have failed in both private and public schools have been made successful in Seventh-day Adventist schools. SDA schools embrace the philosophy that “it is wrong to suppose that education is a thing to be finished. It is not limited to our early years or confined to school day seasons. Education goes on as long as life shall last.” So it is not unusual to find men or women of thirty or more years sitting in class with teenagers. Fifteen years later when you meet these same people they are lawyers, teachers, doctors, nurses, business owners and belong to a host of other professions. What makes the difference? SDA education plants within the minds of learners the hope that only the Divine can impart. Stop for a minute and consider the man or woman who dropped out of high school. How many of them return and become successful professionals? Within the SDA education system the percentage that is moved by the hope dispensed by teachers, pastors and fellow believers is unmatched. If our schools are that good, and they are, why is it that so many people in the church choose to send their children to public schools? I present three reasons where there could be ten. First, they say it is cheaper. Second, they are convinced that since they turned out right and did not go to an SDA school their children will too. Third, they see students in the SDA schools who have failed as other students do. Allow me to respond to these three excuses which are often given as reasons by well thinking individuals. First, they say it is less costly than SDA education. In many cases they are correct. But first let us define cost. Education cost is more than the dollars we spend or do not spend. As Christians, we may be well acquainted with the words of E. G. White, “the work of education and redemption are one.” It could not be more succinctly and clearly stated. If your children’s soul is worth heaven how much are you willing to pay? Each parent must answer that question in the stillness of the night. What would you pay for your child’s salvation? It may be the same price for his education. Second, yes, you may have turned out right going to a non-SDA school but is your child growing up in the same world in which you grew up? I do not think so. Look at the world around you. Consider the youth culture of this age. Does your child have the same chance you had as a youth? Give your child a fighting chance. He/she is worth all you have. Do not wait until it is too late to give your child the best fighting chance. Third, yes some students fail in the SDA school but on average the success rate is usually higher than in public schools. SDA schools may not have the best laboratories, playfields and gyms, sophisticated equipment or buildings, but they have a higher percentage of students who go to college, become professionals than any other group. If you are doubtful, hit the Internet and do the search. Parents, as you plan for next school year consider the success rate of students who attend SDA schools, colleges and universities. -Dr. Trevor Gardner, President; Northern Caribbean University THE GOOD NEWS GOSPEL EXPLOSION IS COMING TO NASSAU!
