CHURCH MEMORIALSChurch Altar Candle in memory of Deborah (Tallman) Vanderbly requested by Family.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

“I am the bread that came down from heaven…”

John 6:42-51“Jesus is the only one who can reveal God to others

because he has seen him and knows him” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 151).

The event in the First Reading in the Elijah narratives takes place soon after Elijah has overcome the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Furious at Elijah, King Ahab and his wife Jezebel are determined to kill him. Fleeing to the desert, Elijah becomes despondent and dejected, asking God for death. The prophetic vocation is fraught with opposition, re-jection, and persecution, and Elijah has had enough for one lifetime. But God has other plans.

Resting under a broom tree, Elijah twice experiences an angel waking him and ordering him to eat. Elijah eats and drinks from the hearth cake and water miraculously provided. Nourished and refreshed, Elijah is again energized, walking forty days and nights to encounter the Lord at Horeb, or Mount Sinai.

Like Moses, Elijah journeys through the desert to en-counter the Lord and to be reenergized for service to God and others. Like Moses and the people on their desert journey, God does not give up on Elijah, but nourishes and sustains him. Christians affirm that God nourishes us on our life’s jour-ney through Christ, the living bread that came down from heaven.

The Gospel continues Jesus’ argument with an unbe-lieving crowd after his declaration in being the bread that came down from heaven. The crowd, in murmuring reminis-cent of the lack of faith in God during the Exodus desert expe-rience, responds that they know Jesus’ parentage, so how can he claim heavenly origins.

Jesus continues to instruct them by affirming that to know him is to know the Father. Since he is the “bread of life,” whoever believes in him will have eternal life. The desert manna that came down from heaven did not provide eternal life. Rather, Jesus the “living bread that came down from heaven,” is true bread that provides eternal life to all who believe and partake, “whoever eats this bread will live for-ever.”

Jesus, our true source of nourishment, goes on to specify that the bread he will give us is his “flesh for the life of the world.” Partaking of Jesus, the “bread of life,” calls all who partake to give of themselves for the life of the world. We are nourished by Jesus so that we can nourish others both physically and spiritually. Jesus came to model how to be sources of nourishment that the Father has given us in Christ.

St. Francis 54th Annual CarnivalThank You!

Thank you to all of the members of our parish com-munity who worked countless hours to make our 54th Annual Carnival a smashing success. A major parish event like a car-nival does not happen by itself. Many people need to donate countless hours to make it a reality.

A gigantic “Thank You” to Dale Ostrander and his Carnival Crew for the unbelievable amount of time they put into constructing the Carnival. The Carnival Crew put in very long days constructing our Carnival City. After keeping the

Carnival working each night, they stayed late to clean up and then woke up early the next morning to start all over again.

“Thank You” to Frank Caropreso and Ray Telep who managed the internal operations. “Thank You” to Kathy Reap and Cathy Beshaw who handled the unenviable task of assign-ing the workers to the different booths and coordinating the 50/50 ticket sellers. “Thank You” to Maryann Marren for scheduling the Confirmation candidates to work in different booths. “Thank You” to our Knights of Columbus for selling ride tickets.

A big “Thank You” to Cathy Telep, Ed Veronelli, Josie Dymowski, Diane Drew, and Olympia Luciani who guided the dependable kitchen workers. “Thank You” to Pat Demarest for coordinating our pizza operation. “Thank You” to Carol Funcheon and Jolene Colsant for organizing the Ladies Guild workers in the Food Booth. A shout out “Thank You” to Ron Morano, the voice of the Carnival who served as emcee. Also, a great big “Thank You” to the Wanaque Police and the Wanaque First Aid Squad who worked so hard to en-sure the safety of all the Carnival attendees.

Also, a big “Thanks” to Jane Wright and Melissa Rivera who organize and coordinate many behind the scenes activities in the Rectory. And, one last “Thank You” to anyone who had anything to do with the carnival.

Once again, I am proud to be a part of this amazing faith community. Now on to next year for more pizza, zep-pole, cheese steaks and hamburgers at our 55th Annual Carni-val!

Carnival Big Top Donation BoxesFundraising Total as of August 3: $420 Don’t forget about our Carnival Big Top Donation

Drive. At a parishioner’s suggestion, the big donation box is now in the Narthex. A smaller donation box is on the table near the side entrance to the Church. As the parishioner com-mented, “If everyone puts just one dollar in the box each week we will reach our goal in no time.” We average around 500 people at Mass each weekend. The parishioner is spot on. If everyone puts just one dollar in a donation box each week we will bring in around $500 each weekend or $2,000 each month so we will reach our goal of $15,000 in a few months (Of course, fives, tens, twenties, fifties, and hundreds gladly ac-cepted).
