Unit Instructional Activities: What Makes a Habitat Unique?

Instructional Activity for Topic 1: Unique Habitats: Geography & Location


The class will view the video clip “Search Shark” from BrainPop Jr. as a way to introduce the class to accessing only trustworthy and appropriate sites for researching.

Students will choose their favorite animal and will use digital resources (PebbleGo and WorldBook Kids) to research and identify the habitat that their animal of choice lives in and two unique facts about this animal. Students will then identify the unique habitat that they will be researching for this unit: polar region, tundra, desert, rainforest, grassland, temperate forest, ocean, wetlands.

Students will then use print and non-print resources to analyze the geography, and location of their habitats. Students will have the option to record their notes handwritten, typed online via office 365, or students may record their notes via audio using Wixie.

Students will post in a Padlet their favorite animal, the unique habitat they will be researching, a variety of locations of where this habitat can be found throughout the world, and share the resources that they used to locate this information.

Instructional Activity for Topic 2 & 3 : Unique Habitats: Animals & Plants

The library media specialist (LMS) will read aloud “The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest” While reading, the class will share the different and unique animals in the rainforest. While reading, the LMS will share the new vocabulary needed for this lesson “physical description” and “diet” as related to their animal research. The LMS will also share and discuss the rubric for the final project so that students know the expectations throughout the entire research process. The rubric will be shared digitally onto a Discovery BoardBuilder and accessed via BCPSOne lesson tiles each week throughout the unit. The Board Builder will also have a curated lists of websites students can use for research that are accessed outside of BCPSOne digital content and screen casts showing students how to check out eBooks and manipulate tools within Discovery Education.

The LMS will model how to use a variety of resources to research two unique animals and plants to the polar region. Resources include online databases, books, and e-books found within the school library’s collection. LMS will access the eBook “Polar Regions” in order to model how to use the table of contents and headings to take notes on the unique animals and plants living in the polar region.

Students will then be able to work in collaborative groups with peers whom are researching similar habitats for two unique animals and determine the physical description, and diet of these animals, and create an image of the organism. Students will also research and determine two unique plants that survive in their habitat and provide a physical description and picture. Students will access a variety of sources curated by the LMS. The LMS will discuss how to find trustworthy and age appropriate materials for the research. Resources will include books (sorted in bins by the LMS according to habitat), E-books, online databases, websites, and digital content found within BCPSOne.


Instructional Activity for Topic 4: Unique Habitats: Weather

LMS will read aloud two poems from “Weather: Poems”, a book with a collection of poems about different types of weather.

LMS will then model how to search for and access eBooks and PebbleGo about the different habitats that groups are researching. LMS will check out the e-book “Polar Regions” from Destiny Discover. LMS will model how to use the table of contents in order to find the section of the text/eBook that describes the weather patterns within the polar region.

Students will work in collaborative groups with peers researching similar habitats in order to research weather patterns within their chosen habitat. Students can use nonfiction books from the school collection curated by the LMS, eBooks checked out from Destiny Discover, and PebbleGo. Students have the option to continue recording their notes on their unique habitat via hand, using Office 365 (collaborative tool), or record their notes on Wixie (option to record voice rather than type or write.)

Who Am I?: At the end of class, students will share one a description of their habitat’s weather and other groups will try to infer which habitat they are becoming experts on.

Instructional Activity for Topic 5: Unique Habitats: Compare & Contrast Habitats

Compare & Contrast Habitats: This week students will work in different collaborative groups, Rather than working with a group of students researching the same habitat students will be placed in groups with students whom are researching different habitats. Students will share notes and use a variety of print and digital resources to analyze how two different habitats are contrasting to the habitats they have been researching throughout the unit. While groups are working together to distinguish specific details about how the habitats are similar and different, the LMS will work with small groups to ensure accurate research/notes and check that students have correctly sited their resources throughout the unit.

Create and Share: As students finalize their research on their habitat, the LMS will share her Board Builder for her unique habitat “Polar Region” via the Promethean Board. Students will then begin creating their BoardBuilder. While students are working, the LMS will be working with small flexible groups in order to meet the needs of all learners in the media center. Students will have another class period to finalize and then share their unique habitat Discovery Education Board Builder. Early finishers will have the option to read more books/eBooks about unique habitats, build their own habitat via NetTrekker, or access “The Magic School Bus: Great Habitat Match Up” site.

Peer Edit: The class will then have a gallery walk around the media center to view and peer edit their classmates’ final project. Students will be able to leave two stars and a wish as feedback for their peers.
