Yazooan recalls

talk with

witness to

Lincoln murderBy GARY ANDREWSEditor and Publisher

In 2003, it would seemimpossible to actually knowsomeone who has spoken withan eyewitness of theassassination of AbrahamLincoln in 1865. EmoryHodgson Jr. defies what onewould think because he oncespoke to one who was in theFord Theater that fatefulnight.Hodgson was bom 1914 in

Da3^on, Va."I was born in the middle of

a Civil War battlefield,"Hodgson said recently. "It wasin the Shenandoah Valleywhere Stonewall Jackson ledthe South and GeneralSheridan led the North."

The first 10 years of his life,Hodgson lived in Virginia andwas close to his grandmother.Spending a lot of time withher gained him a wealth ofstories about the Civil Warand relationships his familyhad with both Union andConfederate soldiers. Hisgreat grandfather, RichardJohnston, was a schoolmate ofGeneral Sherman at WestPoint. In fact, Sherman was inhis great grandparents'wedding. As he reminisced about one

of her stories, Hodgsonrecalled the time hisgrandmother was inCharleston, S.C. and GeneralBeauregard fired the firstshot of the Civil War at Fort

Pfioto by Gary Andrews

EMORY HODGSON JR. hasvivid memories of his ties tothe past.Sumter. He remembers askingher about it and she said, "Itwoke me up. It woke me up."Another time, his

grandmother was inSavannah, Ga. A staunchsouthern belle and believer inthe confederacy, theoutspoken Miss Johnston gotin trouble tearing up a UnionJack flag and was arrested. This happened at the timeSherman was making hisfamous march from Atlanta toSavannah and he was intown. Mrs. Johnston called onSherman to get her daughterout of jail, and he assistedthem in quick order. The relationship between

Mrs. Johnston, her family andGeneral Sherman remainedin tact even though MrJohnston had died severalyears earlier from a diseasphe contacted while onmission in Mexico. ^Before she could marrv

Miss Johnston wrote a lpf<-to Sherman to ask permissionto marry a man namoSHodgson. The letter of

back and said by all means donot marry this Hodgson man;you deserve better."As most young brides in

love, she married him anyway.Another adventure that

Hodgson remembers is hisvisit to his grandmother'sgood friend, Mrs. White,"My grandmother insisted

that I spe^ with her since Iwas always talking aboutCivil War things. She wouldsay, "Now Emory Jr., youought to go next door and talkto Mrs. )^ite.""So I went next door and

knocked on the door and thisgreat big woman, overweightwoman, came to the door andinvited me into her livingroom."Hodgson went on to say that

Mrs. White was at Ford'sTheatre the night PresidentLincoln was shot and killed."Well, it was my 15th

birthday and I had been giventhe opportxmity. My parentssaid that they would take meto the city for the theatre,"White said. She related that her family

arrived with their horse andbuggy and planned a stay inthe hotel for the night."It was only a 6-mile trip to

the theatre, however wewould spend the nightbecause there was not much

buggy riding at night."^er turning the horse into

the livery people. White andher family went to thetheatre.*Well, we went to the Ford

Theatre and we were facingthe general seating area, butwe could see PresidentLincoln up there in thepresident's box or the bestseat in the house," White said.Relating her story to the

young Hodgson, shecontinued. "The show wasgoing on and all of a suddenthere was an explosion. Someman jumped out of thepresident's box onto the stageand everybody stood up andbedlam was created and chaosand my parents got me out ofthere as quickly as they couldand we went back to thehotel.", Hodgson said this was theend of his interview with aneye witness account ofPresident . Lincoln'sassassination. Being atremendous history buff,Hodgson recalled some morehistory of his family's pastdating back to the 1700s."My grandmother's

grandfather was the firstgovernor of North Carolinaelected by the people."Being a walking history

Monday, city councilmenvoted to remove their namesfrom the mandatory cityemployees drug testing list, with one councilman callingthe decision a disgrace. In a 3-2 vote, with Mayor

Wardell Leach and Ward 2Alderman Jack Varneropposing, the council voted tohave their names taken offthe city's list for drug testingdue to alleged financialconcerns and concerns relatedto a lawsuit in which three of

the city's councilmen areinvolved.

"You know we are goingthrough a lawsuit, and I canonly say so much about thislawsuit," Ward 4 AldermanAuhry Brent Jr. said. "They

are in the phase calleddiscovery now, and somethings have been discoveredthat's not very pretty, and wewere basically advisedbecause of this discovery thatwe didn't need to be goingthrough testing like this."Brent said the councilmen's

attorneys advised them toremove themselves from thedrug testing list because theymay be "set up" although hewas adamant about the factthat he has full faith in King'sDaughters Hospital, thetesting agency."We were basically advised

that we need to get off thisdrug testing thing right nowbecause we could be set up,"Brent said. "And I know that'sbad, and not through thehospital or anything. It's justthat we need to refrain fromdoing anything until thisthing is over.
