Praise and honor and may we ever

TINSLEY BAPTIST CHURCH
The first attempt to start the Tinsley Baptist Church was in the summer
of 1940 when a tent revival was held. After this, services were held for
a time in the lobby of the Tinsley Hotel, and some funds were raised
toward acquiring the use of this building as a church. This effort failed, however, due to the small number of Baptist families in the community
and to opposition from the non-Christian people then in the town. The
money that was raised was returned to the donors and all efforts toestablish a church ceased.
In the summer of 1944 the Anding and Oil City churches combined
forces and conducted a religious census of the community. EnoughBaptist families were found to make another effort at planning a churchin Tinsley. Accordingly, the store building belonging to Mr. G. C.Woodruff, next to the railroad, was rented for a meeting place and mis
sion Sunday School was begun by pastors and workers of Oil City andAnding churches. This grew into a Friday night Sunday School andpreaching service, conducted alternately by Rev. Don Land and Rev.Earl George.
Services were held in this building for several months, but because of
noise made by passing trains another meeting place had to be found.Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Young invited the group to meet in their home, and
in the new meeting place more people began to attend and the adultmembers of the congregation began to talk of organizing into a church.
On June 14, 1945, a business meeting was held with Dr. Webb Brame, pastor of First Baptist Church in Yazoo City, attending, as well asRev. Don Land and Rev. Earl George. The date for organization was
set for July 15, 1945, and on this date the Tinsley Baptist Church wasorganized with twelve members. In October, 1945, the church was presented to the Yazoo Baptist Association by Rev. Don Land and wasaccepted by the Association.
The church continued to meet in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Young,Sr., for over one and a half years. After this a building place was given
by Miss JennI Stevens of Canton, Mississippi. A large donation on thebuilding fund was also given by this fine lady. In December, 1945, thebuilding was completed enough for services to be held.
One striking addition to the church since its completion is the beautifulbaptistry picture which was painted by Mr. W. W. Brignac and presentedto the church in honor of his wife, Mrs. Faye Brignac, in the summer of1953.
Twelve pastors have served the Tinsley Baptist Church, and each onehas contributed much to the growth of the church and its beauty. Inconclusion, the Tinsley Baptist Church could be called the churchthat couldn't be built.
