There is still a lot to be learnedabout the flora and fauna of StBarthélemy. But the local biodi-versity is currently being men-aced by an invasion of the com-mon iguana. Larger and moreaggressive than its native coun-terpart, the common species hascolonized the island, putting thenative West Indian Iguana indanger of extinction. The NatureReserve is hoping to createsanctuaries for them on theislands of Frégate and Fourchue

The West Indian Iguana is cur-rently an endangered species inSaint Barth.Until about 10 years ago, thespecies endemic to the islandwas doing quite well… until abox from South America allowedabout one hundred common iguanas toescape onto the tarmac at Juliana Air-port in Sint Maarten. The incident tookplace in the early 2000s, according tothe hypothesis of scientist MichelBreuil, a specialist in French Antillesamphibians and reptiles at the NationalNatural History Museum, to try andtrack the date of this invasive speciesarriving in St Barth. Imported to theisland, the common iguanas wereabandoned when they got too big, or

because of the damage they caused, from malodorous droppings todestruction of gardens where they atethe various plants.

The Survival of the FittestBut once free to roam, the commoniguana reverted to its natural behavior.“The male is more imposing than thatof the West Indian iguana: he chaseshim away in order to mate with thefemales,” explains Breuil, who hasbeen working with the NaturalReserve for the past few years in order

to take a census of the island’siguana population. “Thespecies is especially prolific, and the female can lay as manyas 70 eggs at once.” It onlytakes a few times before a pop-ulation of hybrids appears andin larger numbers. And asBreuil points out: “the iguanadoes not have a natural predatoron the island.” The presence ofthis same invasive species hascaused the disappearance of theWest Indian Iguana in LesSaintes and Grande-Terre(Guadeloupe). And unlessmeasures are taken to stop thetrend, the native iguana willalso disappear Basse-Terre. Inkeeping with a national plan ofaction to save the species,

measures will be taken to move themto protected islands.A photography exhibit, “The IguanaOf Saint Barth,” can be seen throughmid-August in the Natural Reservecenter in Gustavia.

Biodiversity

West Indian Iguana MenacedBy Common Iguana

The hybrid, on the left, is the result of mating between the native West IndiesIguana and the common iguana imported into Saint Barth. The staff of theNatural Reserve is trying to capture this invasive and aggressive species.

FRÉGATE AND FOURCHUE: TWO NEW ISLAND SANCTUARIES“The hybridization of the WestIndies Iguana and the commoniguana is a factor in the disappea-rance of the species,” notes Breuil. To prevent this, the NaturalReserve of St Barthélemy hasbegun a rescue operation to savethe endemic species. The staff of the Natural Reserve, volunteers of the West IndianIguana Species Group, and theAlsophis association, have capturesa dozen of the West Indies iguana, males and females and transportedthem to the islands of Frégate andFourchue, where the scientists hopethey will reproduce. These twoislands were once a natural habitatfor these iguanas. A first census taken in Saint Bar-thélemy by the Natural Reservecounted a population of 200 nativeWest Indian Iguanas on the island.

Michel Breuil and members of the West IndianIguana Group recently counted and identified a population of 200 native West Indies Iguanas.

Veterans of past St. Barth SummerSessions, Tom Howie and AlvaroKapaz are back this year, both asmusicians and consultants, helpingThierry de Badereau of La Plageexpand the musical boundaries ofthe festival, which runs fromAugust 5-15 (see complete sched-ule). Graduates of Boston’sBerklee College of Music, theyhave called upon the talents of oth-er grads as well as musicians fromKapaz’s native Brazil, includingTais and Aberto Pra Balanço: “Weare adding a Brazilian accent to amix of rock, pop, indie, and elec-tronic music,” he says.

Both Howie and Kapaz will playwith their own bands as well as theSummer Sessions house band:“We have created a house band oftalented musicians who can playjust about anything,” Howie notes.“This creates a musical thread forthe festival and cuts down on costsof bringing in musicians.” All ofthe musicians perform for free, while the non-profit association StBarth Rocks provides airfare, housing, and meals.

“Tom and I are careful to get the

artists to make music other thanwhat they usually play, and to cre-ate a unique musical experiencefor St Barth,” explains Kapaz, whose own group, Project K-Paz,plays only improvised music. “Ourmusic lives in the moment and wedo what inspires us,” he adds.“Last year we played in almostevery concert but this year broughtadditional guitar players to helpout.”

And with these two talented musi-cians on the team, the St BarthSummer Sessions is on the road tobecoming a major summer musicfestival in various venues aroundthe island. “You can have drinks inone place and listen to one kind ofmusic and have dinner with anoth-er band someplace else, there aremany kinds of musical vibes andwe worked with the venues to findthe right fit,” says Howie. “Thepossibilities for the future are end-less, and we hope to make it a bet-ter event every year, as we get toknow the island better.”

On July 26, the day ofhis 55th birthday, Pierre"Pierrot" Montalti, ownerof Pipiri Palace restau-rant, passed away inFrance. His friends pub-lished this short text inhis memory:

We would have stoppedby "the Palace" that day, just to say hello, and youwould have asked if youcould offer us a drink, adding that you had just found a very good littleBordeaux, and we should tell you what’s new, thensaying off-handedly as it had no real importance,“it’s my birthday.” We would have clinked our glass-es and you would have taken out your old tobaccopouch to roll one… because with hand-rolled ciga-rettes you smoked less… And we would have madesmall talk about how times flies and all the birthdaysalready flown by, trying to be funny. You wouldunthinkingly smooth down your moustache andyou’d walk away for a minute, as you had to checkon something in the kitchen and say something toyour chef. But you would not come back! So pleasedon’t be mad at your friends if we only half-hearted-ly appreciate this final prank. We can picture you upthere with your eyes laughing like after a good joke, but just between us, this last one was not the best! And the next “little drink” that we share amongfriends, even in your absence you will be there, as wewill never forget your mischievous look. Here’s to you, Pierrot! Your friends.
