our Message to you:

A year in review 2020-2021

If there was one word to describe United Way Central Alberta’s 2020, it would be ‘collaboration’. It was challenging for us just as it was challenging for everyone, but ‘collaboration’ helped us conquer challenges and ultimately achieve our goal. We wanted to make sure Central Alberta agencies had what they needed to continue offering their services as best they could through the pandemic. And, with collaboration, we did.

At last year’s AGM, the Community Response Fund we created in partnership with the Red Deer & District Community Foundation was well underway.  That collaboration began much of our community response work related to COVID-19.    Soon after, we collaborated with the Government of Canada to administer seniors funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Fund, and two rounds of Emergency Community Support Funding.  In total, we provided $1.4 million in emergency response funding to over 120 agencies throughout Central Alberta.  Thank you to all of our donors, and to the Governments of Alberta and Canada.   But, the Community didn’t stop there. With help from some corporate supporters we were able to distribute over $100,000 in PPE to agencies. Thank you to Canadian Tire, Bianca Amors Liquidation Supercentre, and Troubled Monk for providing this vital equipment.   We found new and COVID-safe ways to hold our traditional events throughout our Campaign.   The staff worked very hard to find ways to engage our supporters virtually and we are proud of the work that was done. From our launch of our new digital e-pledge system to our online raffle and draw tools to our virtual workplace engagements we were able to keep things as normal as possible. Our supporters were right there with us finding new and unique ways to engage their teams through their workplace campaigns.   Our kickoff event for the first time in a very long time was not the traditional luncheon but instead the first ever drive-in kick-off and we had a great time with all who came out to support the event.

A year in review 2020-2021

Yours Faithfully,

Brett SpeightChief Executive Officer

In a challenging year for many we called on our supporters to help our community recover and they met the challenge with great campaigns happening all over. Our three largest contributors in NOVA Chemicals, MEGlobal and INEOS - all had record setting campaigns  that led to us performing slightly better in 2020 than in 2019. Thank you to all of our supporters.   How did we celebrate this achievement, when it was clear we could not bring people together to celebrate. We decided to take the celebration on the road visiting donors and agencies alike to share in the excitement in a safe way.   Operationally we made some very big changes in the last year. First, after 15 years in the same location we relocated to a new location in February. This new location is smaller and presents a huge cost savings to the organization. We also have officially moved all our systems to the cloud setting us up better to work wherever we need to and be successful.   We also launched a number of new initiatives this year with great response. Small Business 365 is a way for small business owners to get involved in the community and make a big impact. Women United officially launched and we are very excited to share more as their work evolves.   In April we launched our Period Promise pilot in partnership with Soroptimists Central Alberta and saw huge support. This work directly led to a joint initiative between the Government of Alberta and all United Ways across the province, and our team was instrumental in guiding and advising that work.

While the year that passed was a challenging one and there is still uncertainty for our sector, we know that our community, will continue to step up and support those who need it most. We will continue to be there for our partner agencies in any way we can.   Thank you to our donors, volunteers and partner agencies for all you do to support our community and a huge thank you to the United Way Central Alberta staff who worked so hard in a very busy year to make sure we made as much of an impact as possible.

The 2020 Campaign faced challenges as the economy continued its slow recovery, and organizations we have strong partnerships with no longer have operations within our region. Despite these challenges, so many of our sup-porters stepped up as they always do to support our campaign. Our Co-Chairs Ron Sauve and Edie Hiebert led a talented cabinet who worked very hard on behalf of United Way Central Alberta.

While our campaign was down, we saw many positives from campaign this year. Our workplace

engagements tripled year over year, we had the highest attendance we have had at all of our events

for a number of years and we saw growth in our individual non-workplace donors this year. We are

so appreciative of all of our donors, sponsors and volunteers who continue to support our important

work in Central Alberta.
