The Chamber Council is keen to support the activity of this post to ensure that the economic welfare of the region is a key priority for the local authority. Members are also encouraged to take an active role in contributing to the agenda of the Newbury 2025 vision which is being reviewed in 2012. This forum also encompasses the Newbury Business Improvement District (BID) which seeks to provide extra investment for town centre projects.
The West Berks Information Centre is being regularly updated, these pages provide specific information on local events and activity and allow Chamber members the opportunity to post local news and provide company profiles.

Happy dayshappy days is a new youth club for children with autism and their families.
Founder Kirilynn Gardner set up the club for children like her eight-year-old son Finn, who has aspergers. With the help of the young volunteers from Mary Hare School, Kirilynn hopes to give the children a better chance to develop friendships, something which is often challenging for those with autism.
Kirilynn says “The club is for families who all understand the challenges of autism and can help to support each other.”
The club is held once a month for children aged 5 to 10 years with their parents in the youth club at Mary Hare School. As a voluntary club it does rely on a small fee per child which includes refreshments and snacks for parents and children, as well as a variety of activities.

the routine chartaudrey stone, from Bracknell, has devised a chart that can help autistic children and adults become more aware of their routine. the idea came about when her son nikolas (now seven) was diagnosed with autism aged five and audrey found getting the right information and tools very time consuming.
People with autism can become distressed when their routine is disrupted. Audrey says “Nik finds the world a very confusing place and he gets very anxious on a daily basis. The daily routine charts help him decide what he will be doing that day and the forward planning chart covers everything for two weeks, including day trips.”
She adds “Not only do these charts help Nik they also help the family making for a calmer environment all round.”
Despite being in the early stages, the charts are already receiving positive feedback from parents and Audrey is now receiving requests for different designs to suit different needs.

The club is supported by Thatcham Town Council, Berkshire Youth, Neighbourhood Wardens, Professional Youth Workers and Volunteers. The aim of the club is to provide a safe and fun environment for young people aged 12 to 19 and for them to come and enjoy a variety of activities that encourage participation and personal development.
We would like to involve young people and adults, who have found attending a youth club in the past to be a positive experience, to come and volunteer. Support us, as positive role models, in enabling our members to play an active part in designing a youth club that is fun and engaging.

and in piping work can accentuate the colour and the style of the cake without overpowering or looking too 'primary' and bold. If bold is what is required then the use of beautiful ribbons together with contrasting piping and fresh flowers will always look stunning and can easily be tailored to match the rest of your plans.
choosing your wedding cake is exciting. . . there are so many options of style and flavour, colour and theme. since old and borrowed can't easily be applied to a wedding cake, it leaves new and blue, both of which can quite easily be interpreted and applied to the final creation.

When thinking of flowers, a childhood favourite or the first flower your beloved gave you could be used in your wedding posy as your something old.
When planning something new, a flower you discover in your flower planning can work well. I
love teaching my brides the names of flowers and how to grow them, together with an off cut of lace from your new dress to bind your stems.
Something borrowed could include a ring, a brooch or a ribbon from a family member, sewed to bouquet binding.
Something blue. You don’t have to carry blue flowers although there are some gorgeous shades of delphinium, cornflower and hydrangea. A recent bride carried a tiny sprig of borage, a lovely bright blue flower, tucked into the top of her bouquet which was understated and gorgeous. . . so what will you do?

Autumn and winter are always the key seasons for knitwear and this year its trends are particularly strong, with a play on textures and colours, motifs and detailing.
Cashmere is of course the ultimate luxury. There is nothing better on crisp, frosty mornings than wrapping up in cashmere for the great outdoors. It doesn’t have to have an exorbitant price tag and the better the quality, the longer it will last. A good quality piece can be a real investment and a much loved piece of kit. There are even labels that can go in the washing machine now, so caring for them is easy and an invaluable asset for busy Mums. The plain colours look great blocked together and can act as a good base for accessories too.

body, the legs. The varied and extensive ranges available in hosiery can give a head turning look to an otherwise simple outfit and can be a real wow-factor for your autumn and winter wardrobes. Look out for the lavish baroque patterns and graphic prints featuring bold stripes and dots. For a traditional look

open days are vital in determining whether an environment is suitable for your child and is the starting point for all decisions relating to your child’s education.

Before you visit
List all suitable schools in your catchment area and their specialisation as well as transport availability. Work out how your child would get to the school. Go to the school's website to find out about its ethos and curriculum. If you would like to find out more about the school, such as funding and the school's future, then try contacting the head teacher or governor. Ofsted reports are often available online and look out for the latest news involving the school either on their website or through local press to get a good idea of what the school is currently involved with.

Normally you will be given a tour of the school by a current student. However, you can request tailored tours which often occur on a normal school day and you will get to see a normal everyday class.
It is important to ask lots of questions such as the average number of children per class, who you speak to about your child’s progression, the percentage of children going onto further education and extracurricular activities. If your child is very strong in a particular
activity, ask what else they can get involved with and what can be done to improve weaker areas. Enquire about how the school can cater for your child's
needs and dietary requirements. Read notice boards and school newsletters to get a better picture of what is taking place and how your child can get involved. Keep an eye out for the general cleanliness of the school as well.
The way the open day is run is a good indication of how the school is run. You should write down
the pros and cons whilst you are there, particularly if you are visiting quite a few schools as this will jog your memory when it comes to the decision. Make the decision with your child and don’t base it on individual teachers as they may have left by the time your child starts.
what’s next?
The most important aspect to base your decision on should be that you feel your child can progress in this environment and all his or her needs are catered for. School Governor, Richard Shearing, says "When you visit a school open day, the ambiance you and your child feel should be an important factor when it comes to selecting a school."
For some schools you will be allowed to take your child to a taster day so he or she can experience a typical day at the school, including lessons and lunchtime. If it is a boarding school they may be able to stay overnight.
The Independent School Council (ISC) publishes open days on the vast majority of UK schools including league tables, inspectorate reports and exam results. www.isc.co.uk
Even though open days are generally aimed at students for the next academic year, it is a good idea to look at schools the year before which allows you more time to revisit and reassess the schools you like.

Born in Merseyside, Dickie Davies has always been very sports orientated, with athletics and rugby being amongst his favourite sports to play. Now married with twin sons and three grandchildren, Dickie and his wife Liz live in Hampshire and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Dickie was originally a purser on ships from the Cunard line and spent a lot of time coming back and forth between the UK and US.
Dickie moved over to entertainment on board the ship
and was spotted by a man from NBC who told him he had a great microphone manner and should try television. He then met Julian Pettifer from Southern Television who put his name forward for a job. Two auditions later, Dickie became an announcer for ITV on

a three month contract. He says “I was earning three times that much on board a ship but I was young and had stars in my eyes so I took the chance and that’s how it started.”
Not fully understanding the television business, Dickie did have a back up plan in place just in case it didn't work out. Dickie and his wife, who also worked in television as a vision mixer, took over a pub in Andover and after a long day working in the studio, Dickie returned home to serve behind the bar.
Two years later Dickie found himself on a 15 minute sports programme on Southern Television when he met journalist John Bromley who regularly conducted interviews for the show. John later became editor of a programme called “World of Sport”.

Dickie was originally a summer substitute to presenter Eamonn Andrews on "World of Sport".
Ironically a decade before this, Dickie and his mother were watching Eamonn Andrews on the television when his mother asked him to get a job like Eamonn. Dickie went on to replace Eamonn as presenter of “World of Sport” in 1968 but sadly, neither of Dickie’s parents were alive to see him on television.
Dickie stayed at “World of Sport” until the show finished in 1985. The programme will be remembered for being ITV’s major sports programme in response to the BBC ‘s “Grandstand”. The programme ran through most of Saturday afternoon and included sections on football, international sport and wrestling which Dickie was never a fan of.

“I regarded it not as a sport but as sporting entertainment and it was never something that was going to entice me but people loved it, particularly women. It pulled in a fantastic audience.”

Whilst presenting "World of Sport", Dickie covered major sporting events around the world and interviewed huge sporting legends including Muhammad Ali. He presented four Olympic Games including Moscow in 1980 which he describes as his peak.
In 1974, Dickie presented an audience with Muhammad Ali in London called “The Muhammad Ali Talk-In International Sports Special”.
“I did an interview with Muhammad Ali in Las Vegas outside Caesars Palace before a fight. He came out with just a blank look on his face and then he punched his fist forward just inches away from my chin. Then a big smile appeared on his face and he said “come on, let’s talk."
Dickie was invited into his mobile home where the interview took place. "He was easily the best known and the most successful athlete ever. To be with him on your own is a very special experience.”

In 1975, Dickie appeared on the popular British series “This is your life”, presented by Eamonn Andrews. Dickie remembers the day well, “My wife said you better go to work early because there is ice on the road but the real reason was because they were bringing cameras into the house to film the boys. Everyone knew but me.”
Dickie went to a local pub to host a wrestling promotion, “When I got there I saw a masked wrestler. Then I heard this voice “Dickie Davies, this is your life” and it was Eamonn with a mask on his face.”

and played rugby and cricket before I went into the air force. I didn’t know anything about golf until 30 years ago.”
Dickie is now President of Sandford Springs Golf Club in Kingsclere, “I played a charity match there and sat next to the course owner Paul Gibbons. He asked me to be more involved with the club and that meant I was invited to become the President.”
Nine years on, Dickie is still president of Sandford Springs Golf Club and says "I've played golf all over the world but this is the friendliest club I’ve been involved with.”
Dickie adds “People think golf is an old people's sport but it isn’t. We have an academy at Sandford Springs and I think it is a great learning exercise for young people as you have to behave yourself and learn kindness towards others.”

Both of Dickie’s sons are now involved in communications but even Dickie says he has not retired, “If someone came along and said would you like to do something and it caught my imagination then I would.”
Dickie is also involved with the “Surviving Winter Campaign”, run by the Community Foundation, which encourages people over 60 who don’t need their winter allowance to give it back to the foundation. “There are some terrible stories about people in fuel poverty and some have to decide between food and heat. The money goes straight from the Foundation to the people who need it.”

A wonderful setting for family and friends to drink and eat outdoors on those warmer days and sunny evenings. Inside is a welcoming pub and large comfortable restaurant serving some good beers, guest ales, as well as a selection of wines from a number of different countries.
The restaurant has really stepped up the quality of its meals and the staff are delighted to help you choose just the right dishes for you. The menu is very varied with some enticing dishes .... more in keeping with a good restaurant than a local pub. We sampled some delicious 'Starters' ... smoked salmon with a slightly spicy bloody Mary jelly and ciabatta crostini, as well as some homemade duck liver parfait with plum and ginger chutney and toasted brioche.
There were over 17 dishes to select from the 'Mains' course including succulent braised shoulder of lamb, yummy traditional pork and leek sausages with mash, tender rump steak, fish pie and some Cote de boeuf for 2 people to share. We chose Thai marinated chicken with a spiced lime and coconut sauce, served with coriander rice; confit duck leg with puy lentil cake and a

The roast fillet of codling was particularly good. Lightly roasted and served on a circle of tasty melee of tomato, chorizo and butter beans placed on some gently wilted baby spinach and then surrounded by fresh watercress sauce. A mouthwatering combination!
All the vegetables and fruit are sourced fresh from local Berkshire growers and the meat from local farmers. Who could ask for more? The taste of the food took me back to the freshly sourced foods we used to eat as children.
For 'Puddings and Cheese' there were over 10 deserts and a wide
range of cheeses and chutneys to choose from. Equally delicious! We chose the Summer berry plate which featured a trio of Pimms jelly, strawberries and cream and summer pudding.
Aside from these there were a range of 'Light bites' including mussels with leeks, spicy tomato meatballs and crab and dill quiche. For children there were a range of 'Smaller things for children' including Children's pasta, fishcakes and ham, free range egg and chips.

most families will be affected at some stage by dementia and with an ageing population doctors are seeing more patients in their surgeries, on home visits or in local residential homes.

A dementia sufferer has seen a progressive decline in their mental abilities, such as memory and problem solving. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia accounting for 60% of cases. There are many other causes of dementia including vascular (related to mini-strokes), the uncommon condition Lewy-body and the very rare dementia related to BSE (mad cow disease).
Over the age of 65, about 1 in 14 people suffer with Alzheimer’s and that rises to 1 in 6 over the age of 80. At the present time nearly 600,000 people are diagnosed with dementia in the UK.
symptomsAt first, the symptoms are mild and advance slowly over a seven to ten year period. Gradually the brain loses function and the person may initially develop short-term memory problems, confusion and mood swings. Then the person may show repetitive behaviour, have hallucinations and develop delusions where they believe things that are false. At the later stages they may show a complete loss of memory, become incontinent problems such as swallowing and weight loss. Life expectancy can be reduced; not because of the Alzheimer’s directly but because of the increased frailty which puts
the person at increased risk of infection.
causesAlzheimer’s is due to increasing damage in the brain and those parts then ‘waste away’ or atrophy. It is not known what causes this to happen but we know of some risk factors including age and hereditary, especially if you have a relative who developed the condition at a young age. It is also more common in people with Down’s syndrome and if there is a history of severe head or neck injury.
In the early stages it can be difficult to diagnose and the symptoms can be similar to those of other conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, thyroid conditions plus stress, depression and anxiety. There is no definitive test but if the condition is suspected, blood tests and a brain scan can help. Specialists may carry out an examination of your memory and thinking skills called the Mini Mental State Examination and a score below 26 out of 30 may indicate the condition.
what nextThere is no cure for Alzheimer’s but an early diagnosis is helpful in terms of planning and medication which can slow down the progression of the disease. There
are now four drugs available and these can only be prescribed after assessment by a specialist. The government agency NICE presently permits these to be prescribed only for those patients with moderate symptoms but it is likely that later this year these drugs will be available to patients with the early symptoms of Alzheimer’s.
Just as important as medication is a care assessment plan where present and future health and social care needs are agreed. This is co-ordinated by the patient and family, together with health professionals and social services.
The assessment will include functioning ability in areas such as driving, ability to wash, feed and care for yourself plus financial needs and who is able to support and care for you.

pointsocialisation is a process by which a young puppy (up to the age of 12 weeks) approaches new experiences with curiosity rather than fear.

Fear inhibits learning so if a puppy, still protected by its mother, is not afraid of novel experiences; it allows this puppy to learn quicker about its surroundings.
As the puppy matures, the absence of its mother means it needs to be more cautious of anything new and therefore is more likely to be fearful when approaching novel stimuli. The more a young puppy (between 3 and 12 weeks) comes into contact with all variations of human (adult, child, male, female etc), other dogs and animals, the more accepting a puppy will be as it matures.
A young puppy whose socialisation has been compromised due to inadequate or inappropriate experiences is often nervous of new encounters as it matures past the age of 12 weeks. Therefore socialisation, which is literally exposing a young puppy to as many positive new experiences and enjoyable encounters as possible, is crucial in the development of a well adjusted
adult dog, who is not unduly fearful and is typically accepting of new things.
Dogs that lack appropriate early socialisation can mature to be shy, fearful and sometimes aggressive and are often seen by Pet Behaviourists for anxiety,
fear or aggression disorders. As the saying goes "prevention is better than cure" and certainly in the instance of treating a fearful dog, whose behaviour has been caused by inadequate socialisation, the cure is quite often much harder than the
original effort needed for good socialisation.
KittensSocialisation is extremely important in order for kittens to become cats that are accepting and comfortable in the company of humans.
Cats are pets and therefore there is an expectation that a relationship will be formed between the kitten or cat and their human family. In order for this relationship or bond to be created the kitten or cat needs to have already been exposed to all aspects of human variation to include living with and being handled by, whilst still with the breeder.
The reason correct socialisation is the responsibility of the breeder is that the socialisation period for cats begins at two weeks and ceases at around seven weeks. During this time exposure to novel environments and sympathetic handling of the kittens by a wide range of humans is essential. Doing this will help to ensure the kitten matures to become a cat that is well socialised and is able to develop a good attachment, relationship, to its new owner/s and does not become unduly anxious in its surrounds due to a lack of appropriate socialisation.

There is a great increase in the number of log burners being installed and these require seasoned or kiln-dried wood to work efficiently. Seasoned hardwood logs are achieved by storing timber after felling for a minimum of one year and usually longer until the moisture content has reduced sufficiently. Further storage in covered airy barns is preferable once converted to logs. Kiln dried timber is quicker to produce but much more expensive, much of which is imported from Europe, with the usual fuel miles effect. Buying locally sourced logs that meet the moisture content requirements is one way of saving money and reducing our carbon footprint. Once you have your logs it’s
important to protect them from the weather, it is also preferable to bring them in prior to burning during periods of damp and cold weather. Customers say that logs delivered in bulk bags, is more convenient and clean. The one cubic meter vented bag is recyclable and is encouraged to be returned for reuse.

Kingsclere, on the border of Berkshire and Hampshire, has stayed pretty much the same as it was a century ago. With much of the area designated for conservation and 68 listed buildings, the village and surrounding areas have become a place of historical interest, as well as popular culture.
Kingsclere has a proud and varied history. Once a Saxon royal manor, it was first mentioned in King Alfred's will when he left part of the manor to his sister, the Abbess of Sherborne. Royal connections continued through to King John.
Today it is a busy small market township with a good choice of independent shops, pubs and cafes. Twenty three miles of
footpaths and bridleways give access to the beautiful countryside and to the surrounding communities.
You can access the hills of Watership Down via Kingsclere and you may recognise the location from the 1978 animation film "Watership Down", based on the 1972 novel by Richard Adams.
The Dell is the huge chalk pit on the hill above the village. It is reputed to have been a working chalk pit since Roman times but has definitely been excavated over the past three hundred years. In the first photos the workings can be seen on the left of the photo. As the chalk face retreated squatters built houses on the open spaces.
