spring has arrived and we have great local garden shows coming up! rookwood and West Woodhay house are back this year with exciting lectures, demonstrations, unique gifts for home and garden. have a look on page 39 to find out more.

We also have the latest spring offers and events on the Buzz mobile app. Make sure you download the app to start saving money.

The excellent Buzz app would still be an undiscovered gem had it not been for the vision of the scientists and entrepreneurs involved with mobile phone technology. So by a belated and indirect way of thanks, we were thrilled to have had the opportunity to interview Guy Laurence, the CEO of Vodafone.

Buzz also takes a closer look at why we twin our towns and how regular contact between different worldwide communities helps us dispel myth and make new friends from different cultures.

Thank you to our advertisers for sharing their products and services with our readers and for some fabulous offers that our community can enjoy!

We will be back in June and in the meantime, keep checking our website, Facebook and Twitter for the latest local news and offers.

Too many programs installed - only install programs you need and use. If there are too many this will use disk space which the computer needs to run.

Too many programs open - if you have too many programs running at one time it will slow down what you are doing.

Programs automatically starting when the computer starts - programs such as instant messengers and email programs that are set to start when the computer starts can really slow down the start up speed. You can set programs not to run at start up in the program setting’s options.

Temporary files - when you browse the web or

download files the computer stores temporary files in the background. These can be deleted in Windows by using the Disk Cleanup utility under Start > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.

Unorganised files - another process that happens in the background on a computer is files are organised on the disk. This is something you can see and it won't harm your computer however occasionally you can run a utility called Disk Defragmenter under Start > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter in Windows. This will organise the files on the disk and speed up Windows in general.

A slow computer can be the bane of one’s life. Here are five main reasons why a computer slows down.

How to turn your contracts into deal makersFor many business people, contracts can put a stop to developing great commercial relationships. Tiffany Kemp, specialist in commercial contracts, offers her top tips for transforming your contracts into deal makers:

Make sure your contracts reflect how you do business.

Their job is to help you sell and deliver great deals that make a profit and support you through the inevitable hiccups. They cannot do that if they are ‘standard templates’ – after all, who has a ‘standard business’?

introduce the contract early in the sales process.

an early contract demonstrates that you understand your

business. Getting it out early gives you more time to identify and address potential issues, and stops the sales process grinding to a halt.

Be clear about what the customer is buying.

The biggest single cause of contract disputes is failure to agree on the scope of deliverables. Customers ask for the moon on a stick, and sales people say “yes”. practice asking “which moon”, “how long is the stick”, and “what do you want to do with the moon once you have it”, and document the answers clearly. Then check your company can actually deliver it, before you say “yes”.

“Deal Makers – how intelligent use of contracts can help you sell more and deliver better”, by Tiffany Kemp, takes the fear-factor out of commercial contracts. if you have always

seen contracts as deal-breakers, this book will open your eyes to the possibilities of using them as a source of competitive advantage and to develop profitable, long-term commercial relationships.

Vodafone Headquarters in Newbury is the hub for the company’s development

and is now a part of Newbury’s history. With offices around the world, Vodafone is now one of the leading global mobile

telecommunications companies.

Guy Laurence

creating the office of the future

in 2002 Vodafone moved from their original offices in The Courtyard to the purpose built campus on the a339, “The campus has easy transport links not just into London and the M4 corridor but also to some of our other locations. Those links also mean that we can call on a wide pool of talent when it comes to hiring the best people.”

in his first role, Guy was responsible for the successful introduction of Vodafone Live which marked the introduction of 3G services in the uK. he then ran the business in the netherlands

before coming back to newbury as CEO of Vodafone uK in late 2008.

Changing the business

Guy started making changes in the netherlands, “We took the opportunity presented by moving office to radically change the way we worked. We needed to become faster and we needed to break down barriers in the business.

i have been implementing these new ways of working at the newbury campus. We said we were going to break every rule we felt was no longer relevant to the new generation that was entering the

arriving at Vodafone

Following a vast and varied career which includes Chrysalis records, planet hollywood, MGM Studios and Grand Metropolitan pubs, Guy came to Vodafone 12 years ago as a Global Terminals and Consumer Marketing Director. Originally Guy ran an online content business called Vizzavi, a joint online content venture between French media company Vivendi and Vodafone. a decision to focus on mobile led to Vodafone owning the whole business and Guy moved with it which meant coming to newbury.

workforce. it has now become a way of life for us.”

The most noticeable difference to the Vodafone hQ compared to a standard office is the way people meet. The old executive offices have been transformed into communal meeting rooms and coffee shops are present in all buildings so that people can hold quick informal meetings when needed.

These changes have helped Vodafone employees to work effectively together and now Vodafone is helping other businesses do the same, “Every day we have executives from large companies, public sector authorities and other organisations visit our campus to see what we have done and learn about how technology can help them through a similar transformation. We are such a popular destination that i have employed a team of tour guides to show people around. “

in the communityVodafone runs the ‘Take a Chance’ programme with the Education Business partnership for students from local schools, “We offer them the chance to work with committed Vodafone mentors in Year 10 and when they are older, we have apprenticeships and a graduate scheme available to our ‘Take a Chance’ students. it gives students an insight into the world of business and through mentoring and workshops, we can help build their self-confidence and equip them with some of the skills they will need to succeed, not just in business, but in the wider world.

For our employees who volunteer it gives them a real sense of belonging to the local community and the feedback i get from our staff is very positive indeed.”

Vodafone also supports many other local and national initiatives including JustTextGiving, an easier way for people to donate and raise money through text messaging, which was launched two years ago and has already attracted more than 70,000 fundraisers and over 17,000 charities. already 46 charities in the newbury area are using it to raise funds.

Vodafone have also created TecSOS handsets with Thames Valley partnership, which are specially adapted mobile phones that are used to help people who have experienced domestic violence, “TecSOS is a perfect example of how technology can be used to help people. Thames Valley police piloted the programme and it is now being used by 20 police forces across the uK bringing increased security and protection to nearly 2,000 people.”

4G and the future

With the introduction of 4G this year, Vodafone is gearing up for

one of its biggest developments yet, “We are very excited about the next generation of mobile internet services which is why we recently spent over £800m buying the mobile phone spectrum to support a great experience for our customers. 4G will bring high speed internet to 98% of the uK and give coverage to some rural areas that do not even have basic coverage.

One of the big step changes that personal users will notice is the difference that the new technology makes to watching videos on a mobile phone. For business users it will allow them to take their office with them wherever they go.”

Guy now looks to the future possibilities of Vodafone, “The work we are doing right now, in newbury and at our other locations in the uK, to radically change the way we work, is, i believe, one of the most important things i have done in business. We are blazing a trail for other organisations to follow.”

Lakie’s wedding oozed romance - a rose petal lined aisle, hundreds of candles and a palette of ivory and white blooms with lots of scented foliage, just perfect. We introduced the palest of pinks with a spray sweet avalanche rose and her favourite soft pink double lisianthus but only for her ‘girls’ the six beautiful bridesmaids and the buttonholes.

For Lakie, the wedding breakfast flowers had to be white. Round tables with an elegant, tall glass vase topped with stocks, roses, lily, lisianthus and orchids, again with garden foliage and trailing jasmine for a real statement across the room. More candles at low

at The Vineyard Stockcross After trying on a range of styles and narrowing it down to three key looks, Lakie decided upon the very gorgeous ‘Dabra’ – Blue by Enzoani. It is a fabulous tulle and lace dress with a pretty beaded belt. It looked stunning on Lakie’s tall figure and worked perfectly with her venue.

She accessorised the dress beautifully with a great ‘art deco’ style pearl headpiece from Tantrums and Tiaras. I was lucky enough to see her in person on the day and she looked so very happy and relaxed- the sign of a great dress.

Look Great. . . Feel Better! At Newbury Marketplace Dental Lounge

The Newbury Marketplace Dental Lounge is a private, well equipped clinic with modern diagnostic tools and the ability to quickly identify and assist with the needs of a client. The clinic has noticeably high standards and produces excellent end results. Apart from routine dental care and oral hygiene, all aspects of dentistry can be undertaken including cosmetic dentistry, implantology, orthodontics, root canal therapy, oral surgery, treatment of advanced gum infections, guided tissue regeneration, bone grafting and complex prosthodontics. Botox, a non surgical method of wrinkle removal is also provided. Dr Jeeves and Dr Dimitrios are also trained in nonsurgical cosmetic corrections of the face.

Dental Lounge is experienced in treating nervous children, patients who need special care such as Parkinsonism, patients with major malformations of the mouth due to trauma, tumours and congenital defects. Dr Jeeves’ and Dr Dimitrios’ passion is to see teeth in a healthy mouth rather than in a bin and will go to great efforts to save your teeth.

Advanced technology called ‘human growth factor’ (HFG) is applied for people with chronic infections, ulcers and advanced gum disease. The use of HGF enhances and accelerates natural healing. It is very useful for patients who need dental implants, as it will increase their bone mass for the implants. In some cases however bone grafting needs to be performed to achieve success, and then the use of HGF can be combined for excellent results.

The exam shake-upExaminations are a way of life

for the modern school pupil.

At Kennet School, minor tests are used

regularly by subject teachers to measure

progress and help pupils understand the

way forward.

Externally set examinations at the end

of Year 9 are a thing of the past, though

Kennet continues to test pupils at this stage,

prior to them beginning GCSE options in

Year 10. There has been a proliferation of

examinations of pupils in Years 10, 11 and

the Sixth Form, largely due to the modular

nature of many subjects.

The new moves from Government to abolish

modular examinations will mean less minor

tests which disrupt

teaching and learning

in addition to being very

expensive in terms of

resources and time.

All GCSE and A Level examinations in

the near future will be sat by pupils at

the very end of the course. This will also

reduce the number of re-sits. The benefits

are clear, though some pupils, who do not

like final examinations, will find the new

regime less comfortable.

Kennet School will continue to give

every pupil great support to ensure good

preparation for examinations; we will

also continue to value the many other

opportunities and personal qualities which

make for an outstanding school and which

help to develop confident and effective

citizens for the future.

OFSTED praise for Inkpen

Every child is special, cared for, challenged and develops to their full potential. Our pupils are making progress above the national average and our expectations of them are high.

Class sizes are small; typically 20 pupils and this allows us to focus on each child as an individual as well as supporting artistic and sporting endeavours.

Ofsted graded the school as good overall and outstanding for the behaviour and safety of pupils: “parents hold the school in high regard and feel that their children are getting the best possible start to their education.”

We are always happy to show prospective parents around. if you would like to arrange a visit, please contact the school office: 01488 668219 or [email protected]

From playrooms to the people: moosicology launches in Berkshire

Moosicology’s creator Liisa henriksson says, “There has not been anything like this for parents who want their small children, from babyhood to eight, to learn real music skills. i was going to keep Moosicology as a home product but other parents kept insisting we start classes as somewhere to take their kids. The test groups have been fabulous and now we’re

opening it up to public.”

Moosicology method

Berkshire’s own Les Misérables star talks to Buzz about what it is like to grow up on stage.

We sat down in the drama hall at St Bartholomew’s School, Newbury where Jayne has spent most of the day rehearsing with students in preparation for their evening performance.

Jayne is currently part of the musical touring show, ‘Movies and Musicals’, along with her co-performer, West End actor John Langley and musical director andrew Sackett. as part of the St Bartholomew’s show, Jane and John hosted workshops with 20 students to give them the opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes of a performance, “We spent five hours today doing exercises and rehearsals with the children to give them an understanding of what we have to do as they all want to go into this field. They have not had much time but they have done very well.”

Child starJayne is no stranger to performing as a child. at eight years old she was cast as the very first young Cosette for the opening night of Les Misérables at the Barbican Theatre, London in 1985. She has now been performing professional for over 30 years.

Born and raised in Beenham, Jayne always saw musical theatre as her calling and began

taking evening classes before the open audition for Les Misérables. performing to a large audience did not phase Jayne, “as you get older you get nervous because you are more aware of what you are doing but as a child i was quite fearless.”

Jayne believes performing from a young age helped her as an adult, “it is an unusual environment to be in and the quicker you can be comfortable with it the better. My

parents never pushed me; i just knew it was what i wanted to do. You have to be serious about it and prepared to put the effort and time in, especially now as you have to be skilled in all areas such as dancing, singing, and drama because of the style of shows that are on.”

Return to Les Misérables

Jayne went to Redroofs Theatre School in Maidenhead where she performed alongside Oscar winning actress Kate Winslet. at 16, Jayne went to the Guild hall School of Music & Drama for two years before returning to Les Misérables as the adult Cosette, making her the first and only actress to play both roles, “i think Les Misérables is my favourite performance to be in and “i dreamed a dream” is my favourite song to perform. From an audience’s point of view, i think it is the song they love to hear and you can tell it is what they have been waiting for when you perform it.”

Jayne and John have worked together for over a decade and met Andrew Sackett in 2008 where they became part of the musical touring show, “The Masters of the House” as well as “Movies and Musicals”. Find out more at www.moviesandmusicals.co.uk

The White Hart Inn

The warm welcome is afforded by the general manager andrew and his bar team supporting the incredibly talented chef, Darren. Be in no doubt, this chef can really cook. On the menu are a host of classic pub specials; fish and chips, beef burger, very slow cooked beef suet pudding, honey and mustard gammon and, showing the provenance of Darren’s Roux Brothers’ trained

Eighteen months ago Stella Coulthurst, with a gust of commercial acumen, genuine enthusiasm and a perfect knack for knowing what a successful country pub should be like, turned around a rather lacklustre pub into a real success story.

roots, a table d’hôte menu of sea bass filet , duck breast , confit of lamb shoulder and Mediterranean vegetable cannelloni.

We ordered a simply delicious pair of starters comprising of seared scallops wrapped in smoked salmon and grilled goat’s cheese with vintage beetroots and radishes. Both dishes were perfectly cooked and well presented in an unfussy manner.

The main event

The Sunday roast beckoned and what follows is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. it was the finest roast beef i have ever eaten in any pub,

slow cooked overnight and served with fresh roast potatoes, buttered slow cooked carrots and sublime creamy leeks. The roast pork was equally tremendous and the crackling served on the side was crunchy and packed with flavour. The ales are local and well kept and the wine list is sensibly priced and shows some intelligent sourcing.

For your sweet tooth

pudding was a real treat. Lardy cake with a butterscotch sauce is a new twist on a long lost favourite, as was the excellent chocolate fondant oozing with chocolate from its fluffy shell.

We paired these puddings with a glass of a silky smooth 1928 Maury Solera, a fortified wine and a reasonably priced but wholly decadent finale. The White hart inn should become West Berkshire’s shrine of Sunday lunches.

Reiki is a form of energy healing that requires no specific spiritual alignment. Reiki is an ancient treatment, revived in Japan in the early 1900’s for relieving aches, stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

Treat yourself to an hour of deep relaxation, with soft music and the soothing and healing touch of a Reiki practitioner. You can receive a treatment in Chieveley or in your own home.

Our skin produces a natural barrier with skin cells, water and fats, which help to retain moisture and protect against infection or damage.

Eczema and dermatitis are very common and can be very uncomfortable, causing itching, rashes and sometimes bleeding. in the uK, one in five children and one in twelve adults have eczema.

There are many different ways to try and relieve the symptoms from doctor prescribed steroid creams to applying ice packs to the affected area. The most effective self prevention method for eczema is to moisturise a

Holiday Preparations

Winter is over and many of us are now thinking of taking a holiday. This may include either taking your pet with you or having it cared for while you are away.

hTTP://PeT.askbuzz.co.uk

alternatively, you may decide to kennel your pet. always check the kennels reputation beforehand and visit them to make sure you are happy with the standard of the premises and staff. professional kennels will require proof of your pet’s up-to-date vaccination records. Kennels can be noisy places, so make sure this is not going to be too stressful for your pet.

low cost optiona low cost option is to ask your friends or neighbours to look after your pet while you are away. if they are happy to do

this, make sure they have your vets contact details. if you do not have pet insurance and treatment is needed whilst you are away, check with your vet to see if they are happy for you to make payment on your return. a weekend trial with the prospective friend or neighbour is a good idea, as you will then have time to make alternative arrangements if necessary.

it is a good idea to change your pet’s tag to the person’s details that is caring for them as you may not be contactable or too far away to deal with a difficult situation.

PetmindersIf you decide to hire a pet minder make sure they are insured and allow time to meet them beforehand. Good pet minders will also want to meet you and your pet first. The added benefit of hiring a pet minder to your home is that it will be looked after. They are professionals and your pet is their priority.

Planning is the key to preparing for a relaxing holiday for you and your pet. The key things to remember are:

Karen KenwardPetminders Unlimited

if you decide to take your pet with you there are plenty of holiday resorts within the uK that accommodate well-behaved pets. a socialised animal will tolerate the stress of travelling, but it is a good idea to get them used to it from a young age. a good quality pet carrier makes the journey safer. it is also worthwhile to check your breakdown cover to ensure it will transport your pet in case of a breakdown.

If you are unsure of your pet’s

health get it checked by the vet

before you leave.

If a friend is caring for your

pet, make sure they know your

pet’s requirements and discuss

all eventualities with them

beforehand.

Make sure any kennel you use

is licensed.

If you are paying someone to

care for your pet, check the

agreed charges first.

Familiar toys will help your pet

feel secure wherever they are.

The Mediterranean town of

Bagnols-sur-Cèze is located in the

South of France. Rich in heritage,

the town is home to many

museums, archaeological sites

and Cotes du Rhone Vineyards.

Most famously, it sits in the heart

of the beautiful pays-du-Gard,

best known for the 1,000-year-

old pont du Gard aqueduct, built

by the Romans to bring water

to nimes.

The town is easily accessible by

air, with airports located nearby,

or you could even try driving

there which will take you around

a day to a day-and-a-half.

Braunfels, newbury’s oldest twin, is one of Lahn-Dill’s oldest inhabited places. The town was built around a ‘fairytale’ castle that was home to the Counts of Solms-Braunfels for more than 800 years and is open throughout the year to the public. as well as being a bustling market place,

the town is also a scenic getaway and has even been given the status of climate resort with many saying a visit to the towns will leave you feeling relaxed and healthier.

This year, newbury and Braunfels celebrate their 50th anniversary of their twinning. The nTTa have arranged for 60 visitors from Braunfels to come to newbury, as well as trip to Braunfels planned next year for newbury residents.

TrAvel To Newbury’s

newbury’s newest twin can be found nestled in the foothills of the Dolomites, northern italy. There are plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the italian culture with museums and galleries in abundance. Take advantage of the cheap car hire and explore the province of Belluno, with its opportunities for riding, sailing, climbing, walking, skiing, fishing, and hang gliding. Or just drive up into the mountains and enjoy breathtaking views from some of the roads where the original 1969 version of “The italian Job” was filmed.

BraunfelsGERMANY (1963)

Located an hour-and-a-half’s drive from the Channel ports of Calais and Dunkirk is newbury’s Belgium twin. Despite its size, Eeklo has lots to offer and is fortunately located 30km away from tourist magnets, Bruges and Ghent, as well as the bustling city of antwerp, just 40km away.

The town itself is the centre for Belgium ballooning enthusiasts with an annual hot air balloon gathering during the last week end of July.

This year a trip has been organised for a newbury youth group to visit Eeklo as well as a visit from Eeklo’s rugby club who will be playing matches in Thatcham and Winchester during their stay.

The first of six, ‘Alonzo and Molly the Mermaid’ tells the story of gadget-loving Alonzo who comes to the rescue of his friend Molly after she is kidnapped by pirates.

The books are dyslexic friendly and aimed at children aged six and older. Debbie Kelly, a former sales representative from Newbury, says “Alonzo was invented for my nephew. When he was little I used to

make up stories about this crazy chicken and he would squeal with delight. So I thought I would write them down. I am half way through the second, Alonzo and his friends have a lot of exciting adventures ahead.”

Pub Walks near HungerfordBy alex milne-White

As we head into spring, now is the perfect time to go for long walks and explore the countryside.

In this book, author Alex Milne-White brings together a collection of walks that begin in Hungerford or within five miles of the idyllic Berkshire town.

All of the walks start, finish or include a pub along the way and distances vary between 3 to 7 miles.

The area covered in this book includes some beautiful countryside, varied terrain and many picturesque villages, making for some excellent walks. There are also a surprising number of good pubs to satisfy the walker’s

thirst or hunger. There is wildlife to look out for too, in particular Red Kites have made this area their home, so keep an eye out for them gliding above the fields on your travels.

Alex Milne-White has lived in Hungerford for five years and owns and runs The Hungerford Bookshop with his wife.

archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of ancient settlements and even the remains of a Roman bath house showing that Kintbury has been on the map for centuries. in the Domesday Book in 1086, Kintbury is described in terms of its two manors, three mills and a mixed population of villagers, smallholders and serfs.

The parish church of St Mary’s has been a constant feature of the village since the early twelfth century and is the oldest building in the village. parts have been added over the centuries including the brick Lady Chapel in 1713 and the vestry in 1905, and work still continues today. The church was the first place to provide education in the village with the regular Sunday School until St Mary’s School was founded in 1831.

part in historyKintbury has been involved in many events in British history. peasants from Kintbury were involved in the ‘Great Rumour’ of 1377 and the Blue Ball, which is still a working public house today, was the headquarters of some of the ringleaders during the agricultural riots of 1830. The village also lies on the route the parliamentary soldiers took in 1643, on their way to fight the king at the First Battle of newbury.

Looking to the futureKintbury parish Council devised a parish plan in 2008 which will help the community and local businesses reach a shared vision of Kintbury. The plan looks at the environment, transport, building development, youth and the
