As of January, Berkshire Association of Clubs for Young People (BACYP) is now called Berkshire Youth.

The aim of Berkshire Youth is to support, empower and inspire young people through a wide variety of activity programmes and training courses in settings such as clubs, schools or local communities. This enables young people to identify their own abilities and develop new skills which will encourage a sustained participation in an active and healthy lifestyle.

David Seward, Chief Executive Officer of Berkshire Youth, said the new name is “more reflective of what young people & adults working with young people expect of our services. It’s more than just clubs, Berkshire Youth is about providing opportunities for young people.”

If you would like to get involved with Berkshire Youth, need information or have any questions please visit www.berkshireyouth.co.uk or contact Richard Jennings, Locality Support Worker, on 07881 941345 or [email protected].

Last month West Berks chamber launched its own microsite. This is an extension to the main chamber website and members are encouraged to participate by providing content. This will typically be in the form of member profiles and good news stories. The microsite also provides information on chamber activity in the region and business news that has a direct impact on the West Berks economy.

Travel Petrol costs can take a huge chunk out of your budget but just by running your car more

efficiently you can save a lot of money. Don’t use your car for

small journeys and try walking or cycling instead. It costs much less to run a bicycle than a car and you can also stay fit.

Car shares with work colleagues are another great way to save on fuel bills.

TechnologyPay as go and contract have their ups and downs. Pay as you go allows you to keep greater tabs on what you’re spending but you may get more for your money with a contract. It’s best to shop around and work out the best deal for you.

If you really want to cut back then stick to emailing and social networking sites.

Household goodsTry www.freecycle.org for free furniture locally or go to car boot sales where you can buy and sell.

DIYDon’t throw things out the second something goes wrong with them. If you can’t fix them why not take a DIY course at a local college so you don’t need to call out a repair person or buy a replacement.

Compare the costsAlways use comparison websites such as www.gocompare.com andwww.comparethemarket.com when looking for insurance so you can find the best deal for you.

Fuel billsYou don’t have to go cold to save on bills. Go out during the day so you’re not using electricity when it’s most expensive. Don’t leave electrical appliances on standby and also do your research when choosing a supplier. When getting a quote it’s advised to ring up the same company more than once as you can sometimes get different quotes.

HolidaysLast minute deals aren’t always cheaper. Searching in advanced on hotel comparison sites will not only give you more time but will also allow you browse through more deals.

Some hotels have better deals on their websites such as Travelodge where you can book a room from as little as £19 a night when booked in advanced.

Break costly habitsQuit smoking and you couldsave loads.

Go to www.smokefree.nhs.uk for advice and try the cost calculator to find out exactly how much money you’ll be saving.

save those pennies!

Food ShoppingShopping online allows you to find all the deals with the click of a mouse.

Try www.mysupermarket.com which compares the price of your shopping basket in several different supermarkets and can even suggest healthier and cheaper alternatives. Your local market is also a great place to buy fresh local produce and find some great deals.

Don’t chuck out perfectly good food. Check out www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for storage tips and easy recipes to use up your leftovers.

Christmas has been and gone and now your bank balance is making a recovery from all the spending.

It’s time for a new start for you and your finances and Buzz have put together a list of tips to make that pound stretch further.

Even if you’re saving it doesn’t mean you have to miss out. You can find some great deals for eating out and activities on websites such as www.moneymagpie.com and www.moneysavingexpert.com or try the Voucher Cloud App for your phone which tells you what deals are available for businesses nearby.

Fashionsomething for everyone

The 60’s and 70’s are back this spring!

this year is no exception. Look out for pencil skirts, cuts that draw in at the waist, lots of lace, short hem lines and graphic prints. Keep a hold of your 60’s Peter Pan collar blouses as well.

The seventies fashion revival has been in full swing since the end of 2011 and it’s not stopping now. Flares, bow blouses, hot pants and jumpsuits are big this year. For night time, low necklines and dress slits are all the rage.

We see revivals of trends from previous decades and this is set to continue throughout the year.

The sixties was one of the first decades to break all the rules. Over the years there have been many reinventions of sixties clothing and

2012 looks to be another exciting year for fashion with new and old trends popping up all over the place.

choosing wedding suppliersplanning a wedding can be stressful, so you need to choose reliable suppliers. read our tips on how to identify quality suppliers who won’t let you down.

l Beware of buying your dress online. Trying on wedding dresses is an experience. It’s an emotional purchase. The dress has got to flatter you and very often won’t look the same on the hanger (or in a picture) as it does on you. Nothing can replace the face to face contact of seeing first-hand what you will look like, so there are no nasty surprises later.

lReputation matters. Word of mouth is priceless when it comes to wedding planning. Talk to friends and family about who they recommend –it’s likely you will find like minded

www.mrsjonesbridal.co.uk

suppliers who will go that extra mile for you. Boutiques will often post testimonials and pictures on their website and/or Facebook pages. Read these carefully and if you have any questions, ask to be put in touch with previous brides to get their experiences first hand!

lVisit a boutique’s website – you can often get a good flavour of the quality, ethos and principles of a business from the effort, presentation and accuracy of their website. Check this matches your expectations before you have a disappointing visit

lA warm and welcoming environment: Visit shops with a warm and welcoming approach. Remember that choosing your dress is a journey and you will want to take it with people who care, in an environment that is well presented and professional. Ask about alterations and storage. A good boutique will offer alterations in house and store your dress for as long as you need.

lCompare the whole experience. For all the reasons above, don’t get bogged down with price comparisons. Peace of mind and reliability are priceless. Good quality products and services do come at a price and you cannot base your decision purely on the cheapest dress price.

How to get the best from your floral designer

l The best thing you can do is overload them with information and remember even though you, your beloved and your family are working through every detail of your day, your florist knows nothing at all.

lShare your dreams for your big day; that will say lots about you and your style.

lBe upfront about your budget. A good florist should be able to work to any budget and suggest creative ideas to suit.

lTake a photograph of your dress and your bridesmaids and flower girl’s dresses. Fabric swatches are brilliant too and include lots of details of your church

and venue.

lAsk for a flower workshop and samples – your florist should give tips on flowers in season and good combinations and make up a sample bucket of your chosen wedding flowers.

l Finally, and most importantly, it’s crucial that your flowers are exactly what you want, so although it’s great to ask for advice, at the end of the day it’s your opinion that is the most important. Stick to your guns and you won’t be disappointed.

by Karen sopp at the allium design co.

Hiring your wedding photographer in the outset may seem like a simple task, however it can be more difficult than you realise. the professional you select should create a photographic record of your magical day to be shared with generations.

lPick the style. There are normally three terms used for wedding photography; traditional, reportage and artistic. I believe that a good photographer should be able to do each style equally well, as there are elements of the day that require each form. However if you would like more natural photos picking a wholeheartedly traditional photographer is not the way to go.

lView lots of photographs. It is very important that you view a good selection of the photographer’s work, which should include full weddings. It’s very easy to pick the best shots to showcase, but a good photographer will be happy

www.memoriesthrualens.com

to show you full weddings that should have a consistent quality throughout.

lMeet your photographer. It is really important that you “click” with your photographer. The only way you can be sure they are the right fit with you is to meet them in person. The more relaxed and natural you feel around them results in better and more natural photographs being captured. This person will be around you for a substantial part of your day, so it’s imperative you’re happy to have them around.

lBook early. Good, professional and personable photographers get booked up early. After all, they can only cover one wedding per day. So when you find someone get them booked and you won’t be disappointed.

Talented

Born in Poland, as a child Basia would spend hours filling sketch books with drawings, particularly of faces. At school she was always known as the child with a talent for drawing and was often asked toillustrate other children’s stories.

Despite her talent being right in front of her, the thought of becoming an artist didn’t materialise until she finished school. With no art classes behind her and an original plan to study law, Basia says “I was only 17 when my parents sent me to an art professor. After a few lessons he

called my parents and said I was “a pearl” and had a natural talent for painting. After passing a difficult exam, I attended the Academy of Art in Gdansk .”

Starting out

Studying for six years, Basia was only allowed to paint abstract. At 24 she held her first exhibition in Rome where she displayed all her abstract work and one self portrait but was confused when everyone crowded around the self portrait.

After spending some time painting in Sardinia, Basia returned to host another exhibition in Romedisplaying all her Sardinian paintings and one portrait of Prince Raimondo Orsini. Once again, to her surprise, everyone gathered around the portrait and that’s when she realised painting recognisable people attracted more attention and her lifelong passion for portrait painting began.

The life of an artist is never straight forward but Basia explains why that’s a perk of the job, “As anartist you never know what the next day will bring and one meets such interesting people such aswriters and politicians. Artists get invited everywhere and have a very colourful life. Everyone wants to be associated with an artist and enjoy their company.”

Portraits also have to be complementary of their sitter says Basia, “I think that if women take somuch time to look beautiful for parties then there is even more reason for them look their best in aportrait. Why would I spend hours painting someone in a way they and I don’t like". She adds “Portraits can give such pleasure to a sitter and family. Once a father leaving my studio said if my house was on fire I would grab my daughter in

one hand and her portrait in the other."

Big break

In 1999, Basia was invited to Clarence House to paint the Queen Mother but this was put on hold when the Queen Mother broke her collar bone.

“I thought it wouldn’t happen but in February the Private Secretary called me again with another date and I was thrilled. The Queen Mother was talkative and charming and had the most amazing memory.”

Basia’s biggest achievement came when she was asked to paint the late Pope in 1999 which she describes as “the most touching experience.”

Modern art

Basia believes modern conceptual art is not as inspiring for children as classical art and says the success of the

Leonardo exhibition in the National Gallery reassures us that there is a huge desire for classical portrait and classical art. With the aim to reignite enthusiasm for the portrait and to inspire a new generation Basia Hamilton has set up the Renaissance of the Portrait Foundation.

Basia says “the future of art is in the hands of our children. It is up to us to inspire and nurture thelove of painting and to encourage the younger generations to paint and draw before they will be swallowed by the world of technology.”

Basia is launching The Children's Queen, a nationwide competition to celebrate HM the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Every school child in Britain can take part by painting a portrait of their Monarch. Keep checking www.localbuzzmagazine.com for more updates.

Basia’s biggest achievement came when she was asked to paint the late Pope in 1999 which she describes as “the most touching experience.”

Basia’s advice for young artists is to “choose a technique or style to master and stick to it. There are lots of artists who use lots of different styles so you can’t identify them.”

Small spring bulbs are coming into their own but it’s not too late to buy some more.

A lot of your herbaceous plants will have dead leaves that require pulling or cutting off especially the Epimediums, if you forget then you miss out on their beautiful flowers.

Now’s the time to dust off that list of jobs and put it into action. Visiting open gardens or arboretums will give you inspiration. methodCream together the butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg yolk and orange extract.

Sift the flour and salt into the mixture, then add the chocolate chips and raisins and mix until they are thoroughly combined. The mixture should be quite firm.

For the cinnamon coating, mix together the caster sugar and cinnamon in a shallow dish. Scoop out walnut-sized pieces of the cookie dough, roll them into balls, and then roll them into the cinnamon mixture to cover.

Place the cookies on a greased baking sheet, spaced well apart. You might need two baking sheets if you make the full amount.

Bake for 12-15 minutes. Leave to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, and then use a palette knife to transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool completely.

Pop the cooled cookies into a gift bag or decorative jar and your Valentine gift is all wrapped up.

Doctor in the H

ouse

medical emergency!

I was surprised by how difficult it was for me as a trained professional to know what course of action was needed. I then thought how tricky it must be for the average person to know how to deal with possible emergency situations.

There are, however, simple instructions that you should be aware of and I have chosen two scenarios: suspected heart attack and suspected stroke.

Suspected heart attack

A heart attack is caused by a sudden blockage to the flow of blood in your coronary arteries which supply oxygen to the muscle of your heart, which is at risk of dying unless the blockage is relieved quickly. That is why it’s crucial to get medical help as soon as possible so you can be administered ‘clot busting’ drug treatment and even have an emergency stent to reopen blood flow. Paramedics and hospitals are fully trained to respond quickly and the sooner you get emergency treatment, the greater your chances of survival.

Recently I accepted a call at work from a worried close relative concerned about his neck and arm pains. Fortunately but a little hesitantly, I advised a 999 call to rule out a heart attack which turned out to be the eventual diagnosis.

Dr Richard Rudgley

Symptoms can range from a severe pain in the centre of the chest, to a mild chest discomfort that makes you feel generally unwell. The pain or discomfort may feel like a bad episode of indigestion and this may spread to the arms, neck, jaw, back or

stomach and can make you feel light-headed and short of breath. In my relative’s case he did not have chest pain but did have persistent pain in both arms.

If you think you may be having a heart attack then you must phone

999, there is no need to phone your GP. You should then sit and rest while you wait for the ambulance to arrive. If there is someone with you and if you are not allergic to aspirin then they can get you a single aspirin tablet to chew on but don’t get up to look for the aspirin yourself.

Suspected stroke

The advice for dealing with a stroke is very similar to that of a heart attack. The sooner a person receives treatment the better. During a stroke there is a sudden disruption to the blood supply and the part of the brain this affects may become damaged. Acting FAST is the rule. In a mini-stroke or TIA , the symptoms return to normal after a few minutes or hours.

In essence there are two types of stroke, seven in ten are due to a blockage of the blood flow in the brain and will respond to ‘clot busting’ treatment given in hospital. The remainder of strokes are due to a sudden bleed in the brain from a damaged blood vessel and ‘clot busting’ treatment can make this worse.

A quick guide for the general public has been devised to help us recognise the symptoms of a stroke, think of the word ‘FAST’.If any of these things happen then call 999 as about nine out of ten people having a stroke will have some of these symptoms.

On arrival in hospital a brain scan can be arranged and correct treatment administered but all of this needs to be within three hours, this is why it all needs to be done FAST.

f - Facial weakness. Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?

a - Arm weakness. Can the person raise both arms?

s - Speech disturbance. Can the person speak clearly?

t - Time to call 999 if you see any single one of these signs.

It’s worth noting what experience the carers have. Childminders are required to have completed a basic training course and a 12 hour paediatric first aid course and be registered with Ofsted by law unless the children they care for are over eight-years-old. Anyone working with children should be CRB checked.

Charlotte says “if you hire someone without a qualification make sure they have experience. I have learnt a lot more from experience than I have from my qualifications.”

What about the cost?

Some employers now offer employees help to pay for childcare, this can include paying you in cash for childcare or paying your childcare directly. Certain types of childcare support are tax and NI exempt such as childcare vouchers, directly contracted childcare and workplace nurseries.

Early Education Funding Free Entitlement is where the local education authority offers all three to four-year-olds free

integrated care. Your child can receive a maximum of 12 hours per week free for 38 weeks but this must be taken over the course of three days minimum.

Where do I look?

Nannyjob.co.uk and Childcare.co.uk allows you to browse nannies and childminders registered on the site or alternatively you could call your local Family Information Service who have information on local childcare vacancies.

freephone 0800 328 9148

Firstly look at what you need childcare for. Nurseries and preschools can be good for preparing your child for the school environment and allows them to have better interactions with other children, however, if you need someone more flexible you might want to look for a childminder or nanny, who can also be good for children who are sensitive about being left with other people.

Charlotte Merrison, a qualified nanny, says “I have seen some children unable to settle at a nursery as nurseries can be overwhelming. Nannies and childminders normally suit these children better as they have more time to focus on the child.”

Nannies typically don’t charge per child and if you do a nanny share where a nanny looks after children from two families at the same time, it can often be a cheaper option.

What should I ask?

When meeting the staff ask about the security of the premise and who you talk to about your child’s progress.

Ask them how they deal with certain situations such as accidents or poor behaviour. If your child has allergies, health problems or special needs you should discuss this with the carer and make sure they are able to meet your child’s needs.

The childcare conundrumWhen looking for childcare there are a lot of things to think about like where do I go, what am I entitled to and costs.

Early Education Funding Free Entitlement is where the local education authority offers all three to four-year-olds free integrated care.

From the author of Enigma and Archangel comes another thrilling novel. Bestselling author Robert Harris, from Newbury, delves into the financial world and uncovers hidden turmoil which could transform the world forever.

The novel follows carefully guarded scientist Dr Alex Hoffman whose ingenious computer software can predict which way the financial markets will turn. His invention has resulted in his hedge fund, based in Geneva, which makes billions.

The novel pans across the course of a day starting with a break-in at Alex and his wife’s lakeside home and thus begins Hoffman’s nightmare of trying to discover who is trying to destroy him. What

The Broadway c.1905(pictured above)

The Broadway was known as South Street in the 15th Century. Broad Street came into use in the late 16th Century and was still in use in the early 20th Century. Officially it was named Broad Street in 1928, although by the Second World War it was referred to as The Broadway.

Despite the quiet and rural look of Thatcham Village in this view, it was bustling with shops and industries. The building on the right was the old workhouse, which closed in 1837. In the distant centre is Wyatt’s the Butchers.

The green dates back to medieval times, and may be older. There was a pond, called the Bell pond, on or near the modern green in 1698 and earlier, which survived into the 19th Century.

The Old Bluecoat School c.1910(pictured below)

The building on the right is St. Thomas’s Chapel, built c.1304. The chapel remained in use until around 1540 when it was abandoned. In the early eighteenth century, Lady Frances Winchcombe acquired the chapel and set-up the Winchcombe School. Later that same century it became the Bluecoat School, a name relating to the uniform worn by the school children.

Just before the school is Bluecoat House, which was built around 1870 for the master of Bluecoat School. Next to that is Marsh House (the tallest building in the photograph) which was built in 1794 and has been home to many notable families including George Fyfield, one of Thatcham’s historians. The building next along is the “Queens Head” public house. The latter two have long since been demolished.
