This Sanctuary is a typical religious and modernist building which was designed by José Sala Sala, who was born in Novelda, and at the time was very much influenced by Catalonian Modernism. The Sanctuary is characterised by its peculiar ground plan simulating a pitcher and symbolic materials, all originating from this area. The outside of the building is decorat-ed with modernist motifs, ceramics, bricks and polychrome painted tiles, which make this building an icon of European Modernism. The construction of the temple, in honour to St. Mary Magdalene, took almost 30 years, and is situated on La Mola’s hill, 3 km from the town centre and along the Valle of the Vin-alopó.This emblematic place is a symbol of the city.

Novelda celebrates its local “Fiestas” in honour of the patron saint, St. Mary Magdalene and “The Moors and Christians Fiesta”, which takes place from the 19th to the 25th July. During these days, the town is full of colourful banners, music, flowers, night festivals, pilgrimage, “dolçaines i tabalets”… all of which make this commemorative festival enjoyable for all the family. The Carnival is also interesting, where the people from Novelda celebrate the “Forty-hour Procession”, the only one of its kind in Spain, thanks to Pope León XIII. Then there are the Easter processions in which people parade to the rhythm of drums and bugles.

Its construction started in 1903 by Antonia Navarro Mira, and it is today the property of Caja de Ahorros del Meditarráneo. It is characterised by its sumptuous interior made of wooden and colourful stucco, and the predominant backgrounds of the 20th century’s upper class. The layout and interior design, including the furniture, makes this property a modernist work of art.

This two-floor majestic Casino was built in 1888. Inside there are grand ornamental halls and auditoriums used for entertainment and gatherings. These are decorated with different styles such as neoclassic, baroque and modernist patterns. The gardens that surround the Casino make this building a place to enjoy in the open air, and its bandstand is a good example of the 20th century iron architecture.

This museum is located inside the ‘Casa de Cultura’ and offers the visitor a look into the history of this town, a tour of the different chronologies of Novelda: Paleo-lithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Medieval Age and the ‘Peleoandalusí’ period.

The castle was built by the Almo-hads at the end of the 12th centu-ry. Part of the castle’s walls and the squared tower still remain today. It is located on the Mola’s Hill at 360 meters above sea level and domi-nates the surrounding area. This castle belongs to the group of “Valle del Vinalopó Castles” and controlled communication be-tween the Mediterranean Sea and the Spanish Meseta.By the end of the 14th Century the Castle was reformed by the Chris-tians who built a perfect triangular tower. From its peak they would have had a good view of all the sur-rounding area.Nowadays, it is a symbol of Novel-da. In 1931 it was declared a Mon-ument of National Historic and Ar-tistic Interest (BIC), giving the castle an important architectural and his-torical status.

Modernism is an artistic movement that was developed between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. At this time, the growth of the saffron trade and the agricultural expansion lead to the formation of a social and economic upper class. The upper class were active with the development of their buildings in the current fashion: Modernism. This artistic movement searches the beauty within itself. It is very common to find amongst its main characteristics, exterior stone cladding, ceramics, forged iron, curved-walled interiors and a decoration which is represented by coming back to Nature, with flowing and delicate forms in which floral patterns and women appear in almost all the artistic works.

In 1898 this building was purchased by Antonia Navarro Mira who reformed and extended it to give it a modernist character that remains in place today. In 1988 the Town Hall acquired this house in order to enlarge its premises and preserve this historical building. Inside the building there are many modernist designs, amongst which are limestone columns supported on red marble bases, window bars made of forged iron, a beautiful oval stairwell, skylight, oak skirting boards and chromeplated glazed tiles.

The Plaza Vieja is in the heart of the town, surrounded by many buildings of interest. The Town Hall was built in 1696. Its plain façade shows the old ‘Lonja’ (old market) behind two large arches. The Bonmatí house is another special building of beautiful eclectic design and classical influence. In the centre of the square you can find the statute of the seaman and mathematician Jorge Juan y Santacil-ia who was born in Novelda and who was one of the most popular scientists of the 18th century.

The construction of this church start-ed in 1553. Since then it has been re-formed several times, and in the 18th century it took on the baroque ap-pearance which it still has today.Next to St. Peter’s Church we can find the Aurora’s Chapel, also known as the ‘Communion chapel’.Amongst the many works of art inside the church is the lovely 17th century organ. The bell tower was built in 1910 in order to replace the previous one. It has an eclectic design and clearly modernist decoration.
