Yellowstone Issues Individual Day Ride Permits MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – Yellowstone National Park will begin to issue free day ride permits to individual users who take stock on park trails in 2017. This is a change as the park has not issued day ride permits in the past. The purpose of the free per-mits is to help the park understand where, when, and how many individual stock users visit Yellowstone. Park rangers may ask to see users’ permits during rides on trails. Stock users can obtain their free permits online, by calling the central backcountry office at (307) 344-2160, or at any of Yellowstone’s backcountry offices. Yellowstone’s stock packing regulations remain in effect. • Overnight stock use is not allowed until July 1.

Check the backcountry situation report to see which trails are already open for day-use.

• Stock users who plan overnight trips must obtain a backcountry permit.

• Stock users must possess certification of a nega-tive Coggins Test performed within the last 12 months for all equine stock entering Yellowstone.

• Yellowstone is not limiting the number of individ-ual stock users on trails.

Traveling in Yellowstone’s backcountry with stock is an exciting way to see the park. The free day ride per-mits will help park staff assist riders in planning safe, enjoyable, and low-impact trips.

BIOLOGISTS SET TO BEGIN GRIZZLY BEAR TRAPPING FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES IN THE SOUTHERN MADISON MOUNTAINS, MONTANA. PUBLIC REMINDED TO HEED WARNING SIGNS! BOZEMAN - As part of ongoing efforts required under the Endangered Species Act to monitor the population of griz-zly bears in the Yellowstone Ecosystem, the U.S. Geological Survey, in conjunction with Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, is working to inform the public that pre-baiting and scientific trapping operations are about to begin within the Gravelly and Madison Ranges of Montana. Biologists, with the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST), will begin work in southwest Montana beginning June 13th and will continue through July 31st. Trapping oper-ations can include a variety of activities, but all areas where work is being conducted will have major access points marked with warning signs. It is critical that all members of the public heed these signs. Monitoring of grizzly bear distribution and other activities are vital to ongoing recovery of grizzlies in the Yellowstone Ecosystem. In order to attract bears, biologists utilize natural food sources such as fresh road–killed deer and elk. Po-tential trapping sites are baited with these natural foods and if indications are that grizzly bears are in the area, culvert traps or foot snares will be used to capture the bears. Once trapped, the bears are handled in accordance with strict pro-tocols developed by the IGBST. Whenever bear trapping activities are being conducted for scientific purposes, the area around the site will be posted with bright warning signs to inform the public of the activities occurring. These signs are posted along the major access points to the trapping site. It is important that the public heed these signs and do not venture into an area that has been posted. For more information regarding grizzly bear trapping efforts call the IGBST hotline at 406-994-6675.
