Coming Soon: Montana’s First LEED Certified Public School

Gardiner Public School Selected The Montana Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council is proud to announce that it has selected Gardiner

Public School to utilize its LEED for Schools EB O+M pilot program to become Montana’s first K-12 LEED

certified public school.

LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an international building certifi-

cation system that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. LEED Certified buildings set the

bar for saving money and resources, and have a positive impact on the health of occupants, while promoting

renewable, clean energy. The U.S. Green Building Council developed its first LEED program in 1998, and has

since transformed how buildings of all kinds are built and operated. According to a recent Booz Allen Hamil-

ton report, green building, including LEED, contributed $1.68 billion to the Montana economy between 2011

and 2014.

“This is a very exciting time for our Chapter and the future of green schools in this state”, says Wendy Weav-

er, a Board Member and Green Schools Chair of the MT Chapter of USGBC. “We hope to create a model that

other public schools can utilize in their maintenance and operations to become more sustainable, conserve re-

sources and create a healthy learning center where students can learn about green building and sustainability,

as well as participate in how their school conserves energy, saves water and reduces waste”.

A USGBC Montana expert review panel selected the Gardiner Public School to participate in the program,

among three highly motivated and qualified Montana public school applicants, including Hellgate High

School and Fromberg. Montana’s USGBC chapter will provide the school with the necessary professional

guidance and assistance to see it through the certification process, known as LEEDv4 Existing Building Oper-

ation and Maintenance (EB O+M). Additionally, the chapter will provide financial assistance as well as sup-

plemental fundraising support to achieve certification. The end goal is to improve student health and educa-

tional outcomes through LEED certification, as well as save money and other resources for the selected

school.

JT Stroder, superintendent of the Gardiner School District, says “they are thrilled to be accepted as a pilot

school to become the first LEED certified school In Montana. We live in one of the most eco rich environ-

ments in the country being on the doorstep to Yellowstone National Park. We believe that this certification

will allow us to support that environment for years to come while also teaching our students environmentally

sound practices through our actions.”
