Thinking time
What do you think stops young people from exercising?
Why might people not enjoy exercising?
How much exercise do I need?
• The government recommends one hour of physical activity a day.
• At the very least you should work up a bit of a sweat and get slightly out of breath.
• But a report by medical experts says even an hours activity a day isn't enough. If you want to avoid heart disease and obesity, you need to do 90 minutes exercise a day, experts say.

Finding the right exercise
Some people don’t enjoy exercising.
Maybe they feel like they don’t have time for it.
Some feel too self-conscious to exercise in front of others.
But, there’s a type of exercise to suit everyone!
You can join a team. Being with others can motivate
you to keep going.
Dislike exercise? Try these…
Walking the dog.
Skipping.
Try these…
When out and about take the
stairs!
Try these…
Get your music on and dance along in your
bedroom.
Dancing is FANTASTIC
exercise!
The easiest exercise of them all…
Walking improves the condition of your heart and lungs and works the muscles of the lower body.
Power WalkingTry power walking in the park. Walk at such a fast pace that it would actually be easier to break into a run.
This works your body harder than if you were running.
Walk to school, don’t take the car!
Get off the bus a stop or two early. This will give you sometime to walk and get extra daily exercise.
Resting Heart Rate• Our heart beats all day long whether we’re
moving, eating, sleeping, or standing still.
• With each stroke, our heart pumps blood through our system carrying vital oxygen and fuel, and carrying out waste products.
• A heart that’s in good condition can do more with one beat than a heart that’s not as conditioned.
• This is why conditioned athletes have resting heart rates between 40 - 50 beats per minute which is well below the average of 70 beats per minute in an adult.
• Children aged between 7 or 10 have a heart rate of 70 to 110 beats per minute.
Measure yours
Take your forefinger and middle finger and place them on your wrist, neck or temple where your pulse can be felt the strongest.
Looking at your wristwatch or a clock with a second hand, count the number of beats in 1 minute.
Remember: conditioned athletes have resting heart rates between 40 - 50 beats per minute which is well below the average of 70 to 100 bpm
for 7 to 10 year olds.
Healthy hearts = longer lives
• In recent years, there have been statistical links established between resting heart rate and longevity.
• So how do you reduce your resting heart rate? Exercise!
Task:Over the next week try 5 different types of exercise and write this down on your exercise sheet.
Make sure you include how long you did it for. Remember, we are advised to do an hour of exercise a day.
Think about what part of your body you were exercising such as arms, legs, lungs and heart.
How did you feel afterwards? Happy, tired, sweaty, proud?
