Kelvin Williamson – President, LNT Solutions (N.A.)Kelvin Williamson has 23 years experience in the aviation industry, a career spanning commercial pilot, check pilot and ground services management. His early flying career led him to become the Chief Pilot for Voyager Airlines (4 Years) and a Transport Canada Aviation Inspector/Check Pilot (10 Years). During this time Kelvin was also responsible for the initial Government approval of the Toronto Central Deicing Facility. Kelvin retired his flying career as Captain B727 International cargo ops for All Canada Express. Subsequently, as General Manager for Toronto’s Central Deicing Facility he also managed deicing services for Servisair throughout Canada. As an active SAE Member he is the Co-Chair of the G12 Deicing Facilities Committee.

Ian Sharkey – Vice President, LNT Solutions (N.A.)Ian Sharkey has over three decades experience in the aviation industry, starting out in aircraft maintenance with international airlines before moving into the world of airport winter operations. Since the early 90s his specialty has been in establishing deicing & glycol mitigation operations at many airports in Canada and the US including JFK and the world’s largest centralized deicing facility in Toronto. He is a long time active member of the SAE G12 deicing committees.

Airport experience and laboratory tests show that GEN3 acts fast and lasts longer than competing liquid products. Think what this added performance will do to enhance your snow removal capabilities.

Holdover and Deicing Performance

Better HoldoverIncreased hold-over = effective for longer = fewer applications = cost effective and environmentally beneficial.

GEN3 technology is designed to give better hold-over, thereby reducing the number of applications required per winter event.

Field trials carried out at major international airports have shown GEN3 to outperform commercial acetate and formate runway deicers in all respects.

The two deicers on test are laid side by side on snow contaminated runways at the identical time and application rate. As the chart and pictures show GEN3 melts the contamination faster and prevents build-up for longer than competitor products.

Deicing Performance

Airport Corrosion Damage

Extend Life of Infrastructure & Ground Vehicles

Some current deicers degrade commonly used materials and cause significant dam-age to the infrastructure of an airport:

Galvanized equipment shows serious corrosion even after one winter of exposure.

Short circuits on plugs such as GPU.

Damage to cables, electrical wirings, plugs, runway lighting.

Damage to concrete surfaces.

Damage to brake discs of units being exposed to runway deicing products.

This damage is avoided only by frequent washing of equipment, which becomes a major cost issue.

Reduced Electrical Conductivity = fewer short circuits and less corrosion

GEN3 technology is by design less conductive than potassium deicers, as typically the more conductive a chemical the more corrosive it is. Significantly reducing conductivity in fluids coming into contact with electrical equipment helps eliminate the corrosion to electrical parts and the shorting of electrical systems.

GEN3 actively reduces this sort of corrosion caused by other deicers.

Safe Runway for Pilots

Pilots expect a safe runway. They define “Safe” as high friction values to ensure full braking action is always available. Pilots not only expect a well cleaned runway but also a treatment with chemicals that does not influence the breaking coefficient.

FAA Friction Tests

For the American FAA this was so important that they conducted extensive testing with several deicing products. In the tests chemical and water were applied alternately, so any possible build-up could be detected.

When developing GEN3 one of the prime targets was to have a fully bio-degradable product that has as little impact on the environment as possible.

GEN3 is 100% biodegradable and completely harmless to all water treatment plants.

GEN3 gives excellent LC50 values.

GEN3 is beneficial to the water treatment facility as it is a clean source of food for the facility bugs, promoting their growth.

Application & Storage

GEN3 IceCare

Deicing

(Typical use: 1 litre /25m2) (Typical use: 1 kg /40m2)

Pre-wetting

Equipment Standard liquid spraying units can be used. Check with equipment manufacturers for exact recommendations.

Conventional mechanical spreaders are acceptable. A combination spreader or one which “prewets” the solid at the spinner with a liquid deicer/anti-icer will further improve performance.

Storage and Handling Storage tanks are recommended to be of stainless steel, fiberglass, reinforced plastic or mild steel coated with a protective liner. Clean and inspect equipment before and after the winter season.

Solid should be stored in its original container in a cool, dry, well ventilated area to avoid moisture pick-up and caking. During the deicing season, unused portions of IceCare – Solid can be stored in piles, protected from precipitation, without caking difficulties. When handling IceCare – Solid, avoid contact with skin and eyes.

Prewetting of IceCare is not necessary, but it will further improve melting efficiency and adhesion. (Typical use: 70 parts solid to 30 parts liquid.)

The primary purpose of the chemical deicing is not to melt surface ice, but rather to diffuse down through the snow and ice to break the bond between frozen precipitation and the runway.

The most cost effective way to utilize runway deicing fluid is by preventing frozen precipitation from sticking.
