I hope to be able to grow and to fill the BIG chair. My wish is to lead the institute to your satisfaction. My first public event was the very successful Volunteer Reception. The Council and particularly the MembersDatD large were very gratified to see 70 of our volunteers at the College’s Terrace to be recognized for all their hard work. There was a lovely tribute to Johanna “the Brit” Hill, who recently passed away by her friend, Secretary, Faith Nichols. Hill served on the curriculum committee and a short time ago took on the role of Events Chairperson. Her events team has carried on and organized the Brunch on June 15 with Robi Josephson, who discussed Civil War in New Paltz. My responsibility is to find a new Events chair. Anyone interested in learning about the job or in heading up this enthusiast committee, please contact me at [email protected]. The MembersDatDlarge presented another fun Game Day at the Gardiner Library on June 16. Barbara Hyde has agreed to serve as the new Classroom Assistant Chair replacing the outgoing chair, Gail Picciati. It is anticipated that the second annual miniDconference with the local area senior learning organizations will be held in New Paltz this November. This will afford us the opportunity to discuss the issues that cut across all our organizations. The issue of noDshows, parking, finding presenters, etc. and their solutions will be discussed in depth. Keep your eyes opened in August for the next FALL 2016 catalog filled with exciting new classes. Please share your positive experiences at LLI with your friends, neighbors and family. I've been teaching classes andworkshops on fairy tales foralmost 10 years now. I trieddifferent formats and differentvenues but it was only when Iarrived at New Paltz's LifetimeLearning that I began the eightDweek classes that are justperfect for exploring this mostmagical of topics.

Luckily for me I had the bestpossible group of people in thatfirst year. They were open andcurious and willing to work withme and with each other touncover all sorts of new ideasand themes about the meaningof fairy tales. At the end of theclass they all brought in theirmost creative expressions ofwhat they had learned D an oilpainting, several puppets (onewas an image of the UglyDuckling that when turnedinside out became a beautifulswan), short stories, poems, and new fiction that exploredalternative endings to famousfairy tales. Each succeedingyear I have met new people whobring amazing insight andenthusiasm to the discovery ofwhat fairy tales really are.

When I first told myextended family about this 'new'

adventure, they laughed andsaid that I had been talkingabout fairy tales my entire life. It’s true. I was hooked at anearly age and I understood, long

before I knew what it meant, that fairy tales contained secretmessages for how life could belived. I tried to practice that, at aliteral level when I was six andseven, by protecting insects atgreat costs to myself. I hopedthat if I was kind to them, thenthey might someday help meout. You know, do the dishes, orsomething. I'm still waiting forthat to happen but I've beenable to recognize that a literalquid pro quo is not the real wayfairy tales work. Instead, theunpleasant moments with allthose bugs in my life gave me anunderstanding of how all lifewas interconnected. You can'tmake demands on magic. Itcomes to you when it knowsyou're ready for it, whether you

find it convenient or not.I've had one of those perfect

lives, where grace and blessingshave always been present. Igrew up in a large family (fivebrothers and five sisters) andhad a deep understanding ofhuman behavior at an early age. That came from sharing onebathroom and navigating manydifferent personalities andneeds in a small house. Imaginetrying to get someone at the farend of the table to pass you themashed potatoes when a)they're mad at you, b) they wantthem too, or c) there's someonebetween you and them who hasan entirely different plan. We'reall still close despite, or maybebecause of, such tryingcircumstances.

Fairy tales were my escape.

They made sense wheneveryday life didn't. I knew whatdragons were like, and how aspell could ruin a life. I was thethird child and recognized howhard it is to get it right. My twoolder sisters were both myguides and negative examples. Itwas up to me to find a differentway. Because I lived an interiorlife, my parents and teacherswere afraid for me DD theythought I might not be able tocope. Instead, my fairy talesshowed me how to trust themoment, walk a different path, and believe in magical helpers. Ihave never lacked for anything.Whatever I've needed hasalways arrived, even when Icouldn't always recognize it forwhat it was.

I've done the usual things Dmarried, happily for almost 45years now, had two kids, fourgrand kids, a career (of sorts) atIBM as a programmer, and later, much more fun doingconstruction projects andcooking. At an advanced age, Iwent back to school for aMasters in Counseling. Now, Iwork in my garden, play with mygrandsons, and find lifemarvelously fulfilling. I've had somany magical helpers in my lifethat all I aspire to is to becomeone for someone else.

"Fairy tales weremy escape"
