There was a change of programme on September 9th as theAmbulance Services were unable to send a speaker. With only 24hours notice Carol Farrer came to speak about TRAIDCRAFT andFAIRTRADE. 30 years ago two caring people decided that ourbusiness acumen could help farmers from poor countries to producecrops that they could in turn sell here and therefore have areasonable standard of living.

Our meeting on October 8th will see the return of Mr. DavidCummings who will no doubt, enthral us with his talk and film “TheWonderful World of Wildlife”.

We hope that you can join us - please contact either Betty Cook01352 810722 or Olive Parry 01352 810294

A quality field of some 70 carsmade the start of the 2014 Vale ofClwyd Classic based in thebeautiful village of Llanferres onSaturday the 6th September. The event is now established as around of the national Historic Rally CarRegister Clubman's RallyChampionship, and as always, provided the entrants with one of thetoughest events of the year.

A dull and drizzly morning sawcompetitors start to leave The Druid Innjust before 08:30 and make their wayto the first driving test at nearbyLoggerheads, the gauntlet throwndown by Andrew Mallagh and PaulHarley as they set the fastest time ofthe day on this popular car park basedsection. From here, crews ran backinto Llanferres to attempt the firstregularity section of the day, Clerk ofCourse Guy Woodcock was up to hisusual tricks and had many crewsdropping penalties within the first milewith a cleverly placed turning into afishery just after a road junction. Thiswasn't the only devious slot on the firstsection, as further excursions ontoprivate land along the route allowedtime to be taken from the unwary.

Entering into Flintshire, two driving testsat the Penbedw Estate allowed thedrivers to shine. For once though, anerror was forced from Blackburn'sSteve Entwistle, a clipped conecosting him and Bob Hargreaves tenseconds, the damp grass based thirdtest was proving tricky catchingseveral crews out. A section over MoelArthur saw a new venue used, asmooth forest section that dropped

away from the main road which wastricky to spot with the foliage covering it.Up to the first card collect, past winners,Mark 1 Escort mounted DermotCarnegie and Paul Bosdet were leadingthe event. The pair were under pressurefrom Cestrian Howard Warren who waspartnered by Iain Tullie in their Porsche911. Mallagh and Harley had problemshere, dropping 43 seconds on a mid-point control, severely denting theirchances of victory.

The late morning and early afternoonwere test based, two forest tests heldnear the village of Cwm giving way to arun out to Bodelwyddan for a grassbased test at local businessman RikkiProffit's home proving popular as ever.David and Jennie Aincham proved thestar performers here, their Mini 1275 GT'sagility and great driving skills from Davidhanding the husband and wife pairing abottle of champagne donated by Rikki. It was a rewarding day for the pairing, aswell as the Champagne, they picked upfirst in class despite having mechanicalissues later in the day.

Regularity three was once again anexercise in precision; navigation was viacoloured junctions and led the Vale ofClwyd Classic to one of the turningpoints of the event on regularity four. Theroute presentation for this was a oneinch map with one of Woodcock'sfavourite phrases included, 'on thismap'. Roads built since the map was firstused caught many of the topcompetitors out, costing them amaximum 2 minutes 30 seconds penalty.Warren and Tullie got the tricky junctioncorrect and this sent them into the leadas the event headed into ClocaenogForest for a regularity section.

Starting off easily, regularity five wentdown a yellow that broke into gravel, almost as quickly it went back ontotarmac, confusing some crews.Following the road down, a narrowslot 90 right into Clocaenog broughtcompetitors to the first timing pointdown from Bryn Du, heading backonto the road again, easy sight linesmeant most crews kept good timeuntil a switch back into the woodssaw a long, fast straight passing Cefn

Vale of Clwyd ClassicDu, recently re-surfaced and slippy tokeep crews on their toes. Thechallenge of Carnegie and Bosdetcame to an end here, as a hairpin rightjunction with a slot before it caughtthem out. It wasn't just them that fellfoul as many turned in too early andmissed it, some spotting their mistakeand able to correct it before going ontoo far. The last tests.

The Fishy One heralded in regularity six, taking in the roads around Rhyd andGraigfechan, Gary Edgington andPete Johnson were the class of thefield here, dropping just four secondsoverall on the section. Ruddock andPullan had a bad day at the office, theluck just not running their way, theEscort pair dropping 45 seconds at thefirst timing point on their way toseventh overall. However, it looks likeAndy Pullan has clinched both theHRCR Championship and ANWCCchampionship subject to finalconfirmation, a superb result for a ladthat had his 19th birthday in May.

The final section was once againdesigned to test the navigator, named'Short and relaxed' the instruction wasto drive over Bwlch Penbarrasavoiding two spot heights. As ever, there was a catch in the organiser'sinstructions with one of the spot heightsbeing detached from its figure, theother blocking the road back to thefinish, the only way out was a trackthat went through Big Wood passingthrough Ted Spencer's back yard andacross their field! Most crews weredialled in now and managed to findthe route eventually, it seemed thatmost of the village of Maeshafn wereout to wave the competitors on and

back to the finish under the control ofGordon Jones in full period wear!

Once the results went final, it was clearthat even after his admission that hehadn't driven to his usual standards onthe tests, Howard Warren and Iain Tulliehad clinched a superb win after comingsecond on all of the last three runningsof the event. Speaking after the Vale ofClwyd Classic, it was clear that Howardrelished the victory and said, "I think thatthis is one of the best rounds in the HRCRchampionship, all credit really has to goto the navigators on this event, it wasIain that made a vital decision that putus one step closer to the win during thecourse of the day, Clwyd Vale put on asuperb mix of tests and regularities." Thewin was made even sweeter for theChester based businessman as hisbusiness partner Chas Colton tooksecond overall partnered by the evercheerful Ryan Pickering. In third werelocals Pete Welch and RichardBestwick, One of the drives of the daycame from Clive Baty and Henry Carr intheir Renault 5, finishing the day in 11th,they were pipped out of the top ten byjust one second by David Morgan &Martyn Taylor, the diminutive Renaultboasting just 1300cc and driven withBaty's usual flair and exuberance.

The Vale of Clwyd Classic seems to gofrom strength to strength each year, thebuzz around Llanferres was plain to seeand hear as crews milled about priorand post event. It seems that theorganisers have a real job on theirhands to go better next year, buthearing the plans for the 2015 runningfrom Guy Woodcock, it could possiblybe quite epic.

The meeting of Monday 15th September was held at the Druid, thanks to thegenerosity of Julie, to whom we are truly grateful. Our guest speaker, SueBeesley, gained fame for winning BBC gardener of the year and subsequentlybought Bluebell Cottage Nursery. In her talk she showed that spring, summer, autumn and winter can be most pleasing in a garden, whenherbaceous plants are used in rotational order.

With pictures from her extensive gardens, which showed her borders were fullof colour from the spring hellebores and primulas; summer agastache andechinacea - so loved by bees; autumn heleniums and sedums and on to winter. At the start of the year bulbs are flowering amongst the verdant re-growth.Everyone present was in admiration of our speaker and her garden and allagreed it should be 'a must' visit for next year's syllabus.

Our next meeting on Monday 13th October will be in the Village hall when wewill discuss this year's show - including the final financial figures. The £90·00proceeds from our show auction has been handed to Mrs Austin, theTreasurer of the O.A.P. Welfare Committee to help with its funds.

Llanferres Parish Gardening ClubGardening Club News

EXPLANATIONLast month in News & Views I reported that the September meeting of theGarden Club had been cancelled. The reason for this was a number of smallmisunderstandings, (errors, mistakes, oversights, incongruities, memory lapses –call them what you will) that escalated into a crisis. I have been told that somepeople considered my use of the word intransigence maligned Mr RobArmstrong and impugned his integrity. That was certainly not my intention, itseemed the appropriate word to use in the situation (Oxford Dictionarydefinition, ‘unwilling or refusing to change one’s views or to agree aboutsomething). However, if Rob feels that he has been denigrated I am sorry and Iam happy to publicly apologise to him for any distress that it has caused himpersonally. I have spoken to Rob and we have “agreed to disagree”, to put thematter behind us and to move on so that we can co-operate in other matters, aswe have successfully done in the past.

Following last month’s regrettable mix-up over a double booking - may Irespectfully remind all organisations with a regular block booking, that inthe event of wishing to vary a meeting date it is expected that in the firstinstance an approach would be made to the representative of any othergroup whose bookings may be in conflict.Gilly is a brilliantly efficient Caretaker and Bookings Clerk - but she ain’tpsychic!!Would all village organisations please note that the AGM is on Thursday 6th

November (always the first Thursday) and your organisation’s secretary isrequired to return your nomination slip to Gay by this date at the very latest. Please only nominate a rep for your group who will be willing and able toattend meetings (usually 3 per year each lasting less than an hour plus AGMof less than 3 hours)This is your forum and the way in which we support each other’sorganisations. Please note the Treasurer will be retiring at this AGM and nominations forhis replacement are also sought.NB - Rob Armstrong is Whist Group representative.

New regulations - “The consumption of alcohol in the Village Hall will onlybe allowed with the specific authorisation of the Executive Committee. There shall be a right to appeal to a full committee”.

To arrange consumption of alcohol, it is necessary only to contact onemember of the Executive Committee (currently Mr Rob Armstrong -Chairman / Mrs Gay Headley - Secretary / Mr David Twomey - Treasurer)who will discuss your request with the other two members and respondwithin 24 hours. It is unlikely that any reasonable request will be refused. This amendment to our Constitution was designed to enable more peoplein the community to make use of our facilities whilst remainingconstitutional. The original wording (not adhered to by some previous ExecutiveCommittees) provided only for the consumption of alcohol at privatefunctions; i.e. those not open to the general public. We want our hall to be available to all who wish to use it, but we need to dothings properly.

Thank you

Gay Headley (Secretary)

Regarding the unfortunate double booking of the Village Hall, the following points will helpto clarify the position taken by the chairman of the Village Hall Committee:-· Since 2012 the Whist Club has been advertised to start on the 3rd Monday of September.· For 2 years the group have met on Monday evenings, always avoiding the 2nd Monday of

the month as the Gardening Club meet then, in the hall.· Our members are reminded monthly (on the first Monday) that we do not meet on the

2nd Monday.· All members were told during our last meeting the date of the start of the new season,

i.e. September 15th. Reference to the start of the Whist season being the 3rd Mondayof September is also stated in previous village hall committee minutes (as Whist is runto support the village hall).

· We did not meet on the 1st Monday in September, as School had not yet opened. Weavoided the 2nd, as usual, because of the Gardening Club meetings, and therefore start-ed on the 3rd Monday (for 3 consecutive years).

· We were unaware of any clash of dates until late in August, when we were informed bythe editor of N&V who fortunately realised that there had been a double booking, priorto publishing.

· We presumed that the Gardening Club had made a mistake, as they always meet on the2nd Monday.

· Many of our members live outside of Llanferres (Cilcain, Pantymwyn, Rhydymwyn,Caergwrle and Mold).

· We were aware that many members were away on holiday during the beginning of Sep‐tember.

· To attempt to bring our scheduled meeting forward to the 8th, as was demanded at thevery end of August, and also to cancel the pre-arranged meeting of the 15th September, was not possible – due to both the longstanding prior arrangement, the difficulties con-tacting our members and the lateness of this demand.

· With earlier negotiation, changes could have been more easily accommodated.· Having consulted with the village hall executive committee, it was agreed that we

should meet as usual.· Alternative venues were suggested, but dismissed by the Gardening Club, who insisted

that they “had no option but to cancel the meeting”.· Unfortunately, the statement in the News and Views regarding cancellation was made

prior to the Gardening Club arrangement to meet elsewhere.· We are pleased that another option was available and the eventual outcome for both

groups was positive. The Gardening Club met at the Druids as suggested, and the Whistmet as usual in the Village Hall.

· Apparently, both meetings were highly successful, which is the main aim of all con‐cerned.

I wish to emphasise that to be described as “intransigent” (refusing to change one’s atti-tude) is incorrect and unjustified. After due consideration and consultation, at such shortnotice I could not feasibly change the date of the meeting. It was not, as implied, that Iwould not.

Hopefully the suggestion included in the News & Views by the Secretary of the Village HallCommittee will avoid any similar occurrence and we can all move forward amicably, in theinterests of our entire village.

CANCER RESEARCH COLLECTION

I have undertaken an annual collection in Llanferres for this worthycause for 3 years now and have recently been informed of the figurefor this June’s collection, which was £169.88. The figures for 2012and 2013 were £116.03 and £149.88 respectively, so as you cansee, the amount is steadily rising. Last year the Mold Committee raised£40,000 in total and the House to House Collections alone raised awhopping £3,445, of which almost 85p in every pound raised doesgo directly to research in Lancaster, Liverpool and very importantlyfor us, North West Cancer Research Institute at Bangor University.

So, I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you tothe people of Llanferres for their generosity ... ...see you again nextJune.

What an amazing yearfor weather last monthautumn had arrived andnow we are back to midsummer with bumpercrops of all wild fruits inour hedge rows.

What an amazing year for the UK. By thetime you read this article we will know theresults of the Scottish independencedebate and sadly I believe that what everthe result the UK will not be the same again.More change is inevitable for us all andrecriminations are bound to follow. I onlyhope that the great rifts that have appearedin Scottish society can heal quickly.

As a governor of Ysgol Bro Famau I likeeveryone else was very pleased by theexcellent Estyn report the school has justreceived. The head, teachers and supportstaff should all be congratulated for all theirhard work and commitment to the school.I know that there was many a sleeplessnight for all those involved in the run up tothe inspection but I felt that all along thereport would be a good one. Our thanksshould also go to the Governors who playtheir part and who are very committed tothe school. Also to the chair and vice chairwho met with the inspectors as part of theprocess and to the parents and the PTAwhose support is critical to the schoolssuccess. Finally the children who as thereport stated are happy, well behaved, polite and eager to learn. A credit toeveryone.

Summer would not be the same withoutthe village shows and this years gardeningclub event was once again a great success.I was very honoured to be asked to presentthe cups and certificates and I was amazed

at the number of talented people of allages in the village. Our thanks should goagain to all those involved in organising theday. There is a lot of work, time and effortput into getting it right on the day andthere is always a worry that you may notget enough entries. This was not a problemthis year.

September was also the month for anumber of sporting events. Again I wasgrateful to the organisers of the Classic CarRally for the invitation to start the rally andto wave off each car with the Welsh Flag.Over seventy cars took part and many ofthe participants had travelled from all overthe country to be there, good news for localbusinesses. The only worry was the fact thatI remembered driving many of the cars inmy youth, I must be getting old!!

Sadly this year the annual mountain bikeevent clashed with the ETAPE cycle eventwhich passed through my home village ofLlanarmon Yn Ial and so my loyalties weredivided with ETAPE winning on thisoccasion. Again these events prove howpopular cycling is becoming in the UK as amass participation sport and again it doeshave a positive impact on our localeconomy.

A TV company has been filming in the area. The series of programmes fronted byPenelope Keith for Channel Four looks athow rural communities are coping in the21st century. It is fair to say that all ourcommunities are healthy and vibrant and agood example of what village life can be.

As you will all know Aberduna Quarry hasnow formally closed and the good news isthat North Wales Wildlife Trust has beengranted planning permission to turn the

Finally the first trial of filming countycouncil proceedings has taken place. Inthe future you will be able to watch fullcouncil meetings and planningmeetings from your home as themeetings will be filmed live via a webcam. I hope that you will not be toodisappointed by the actions anddeliberations of your CountyCouncillors. Time and the ballot box willtell.

One never knows what will turn up inthe garden. Only this week, briefly, Ihad a female Whitethroat foraging forinsects on herbaceous plants and inthe Dahlia patch. I presume it was abird on passage to its winteringgrounds in sub-Saharan Africa. Thisis not a bird of small gardens, preferring open scrubby areas withbrambles in which it likes to nest. Itused to be a quite common species butnumbers plummeted in 1969 due to adisastrous drought in the Sahel and ithas never fully recovered. Then twodays later a Chiffchaff was singing ina garden tree. It is not that rare tosee this bird in the garden duringspring or summer but I have not seenone for a while, so this was probablyalso on passage. The species isunusual in that it continues to sing solate in the season, while most birdscease to sing once they are nesting.Friends here in Llanferres, had aFritillary butterfly in their garden inAugust but were not able to make apositive identification. Thefritillaries are notoriously difficult toidentify as the upper surface of theirwings are very similar and it isnecessary to examine the undersidesto separate the species. However, sizeand time of year are also goodindicators as the species emerge insuccession to lay eggs on the larvalfood plant of Dog Violet. I will makean educated guess that this specimenwas a Dark green fritillary, based ontime of year and the species I know toexist in our area.

Visiting the south coast of the LleynPeninsula recently I was watchingthe acrobatics of a number ofChoughs as they tumbled in the air

while uttering their verycharacteristic calls. It is claimed that75% of the world's Choughs live inWales. I became aware of severalbutterflies flying past and realisedthat there were many Red admiralsabout. This is a common butterflythat migrates to this country invarying numbers every year fromcentral and southern Europe. Itproduces one brood here and then itwas thought all the butterflies diedoff with the onset of winter. It is nowknown that some do overwintersuccessfully but I speculated whetherthe ones I saw on the Lleyn werepreparing to fly out to sea and on toEurope. Not much seems to beknown about their autumn migrationexcept that throughout Britain theytend to move in a southerly directionwith the coming of autumn.

There are many Bumblebees still tobe seen especially on garden flowers, although most belong to only threespecies - the Buff-tailed (Bombusterrestris), the White-tailed (Bombuslucorum) and the Carder bee(Bombus pascuorum). The workersof the first two are virtuallyindistinguishable because the Buff-tailed workers have white tails. Bynow all Bumblebee nests will haveceased to function, the old queens willhave died and the new queens will bein hibernation, so what we are seeingare either males or workers with nonest to return to, so they just spendtheir time feeding on nectar and closeinspection will show that they are notcollecting pollen. They also will dieshortly.
