The meeting held on Monday April 8th at Llanferres Village Hall wasoptimistically looking forward to a better summer than that of 2012. Ourguest speaker was Nicolette Evans, lecturer at Northop College. Her topic forour lecture was "Herbaceous Borders". Nicolette described the criteria ofplants, soil, border size and design and flowering seasons. In the continuationof her talk, Nicolette gave out coloured photo sheets and talked of her 16favourite plants and 9 for later flowering in the autumn to give interest, colour and plant variation. There was inspiration in this talk to plant a fewherbaceous items, if not a full border.

Our next meeting will be a visit to Walton Fuchsia Nursery at Lymm. Nameswere taken for the minibus travel, leaving Llanferres Church at 6pm.Further details for this trip can be obtained from the secretary.

National Eisteddfod of Wales Denbigh 2013

The Llanferres Working party wish to thank all those who supportedour "Auction of Promises" by so generously donating items for sale,

bidding so freely on the night and giving cash contributions.

The final total to be banked is £2,000 which exceeded all ourexpectations. Added to £260 that we already have in the bank, thismeans that the Community Council can support the Eisteddfod in

Denbigh, as was requested, without calling on Public funds.

We are also very grateful to all the Businesses from Ruthin, Mold, and surrounding areas who responded so wonderfully to our requests

for "Promises".

It has been quite a long slog,a bit traumatic at times, but well worth it.

April's meeting was a talk by Mrs Viv Craig about her experiences scuba diving.Dressed in the wet suit she wears in warm waters, she showed us all theequipment that is necessary and explained all about the training that has to begone through before one is qualified to dive. She then showed us film of her andher husband diving in the Red Sea. All the different coloured fish and corals wereamazing!

May's meeting may sound a bit dull after that. It is a talk by a lady from theCounty "Advocacy Service", which can give advice to older people on any subjectat all which bothers them. The service is free and confidential, and takes place inthe person's own home, e.g. How to make complaints; Dealing with unwantedcallers and letters; Financial worries; and making sure one is using all the helpand support that is available.

Followed by the usual "Cuppa" Raffle and chat.

Easter VestryThis very important Annual meeting was held in St Berres' Church on Tuesday, 9thApril. After many years of being Rector's Warden Josh Griffiths felt it was time to stepdown. Brian Skelhorn will step sideways from People's Warden to Rector's Wardenand we give a very warm welcome to Anne Woodward as our new People's Warden.Anne is a retired infant teacher, has lived in Tafarn-y-Gelyn for many years, is a Welshspeaker and brings with her a wealth of local knowledge and a feminine touch! (Weare unusual in Llanferres in having so many men holding office in our Church). NoelHeadley remains as Treasurer and Gay as Secretary. Rob Armstrong, Michael Cordiner,Ruth Cordiner, Clare Dyson, Josh Griffiths and Wendy Shillito remain as members ofthe Parochial Church Council, as do the two Clergy Rev'd Adrian Copping and Rev'd PhilBettinson. Our sincere thanks go to Josh, who has served faithfully as Rector's Warden for manyyears with quiet humour and diligence.

Ascension DayAn open air Holy Communion at St Mary's, Cilcain will be held on 9th May at 6.30 pm.There is something very special about holding an Ascension Day service outside: thereare stunning views from Cilcain church and the whole atmosphere aids the sense ofspirituality. Chairs and loud speaker system are all provided.(If it rains, the service will be held inside the church.)

Christian Aid WeekThe usual members of the church will be collecting in Llanferres during this week from12th - 18th May - please give generously to this excellent charity.

A Warmer ChurchTwo electric heaters have been installed at the back of the church and I have been toldthat the church does feel warmer. Remarkably, the congregation numbers have beenholding up in the inclement weather.

Open ChurchWe are hoping to be able to open the church during daylight hours during the next fewmonths so that people can pop in for a few quiet moments of prayer or contemplation.

Monthly recipe fromCAFFI FLORENCE

Poached rhubarb with Greek yoghurt & toasted oatsRhubarb is at its very best at the moment. A couple of crowns at the bottom ofthe garden will make many desserts and cakes. This is a very simple recipe thatmakes a great mid week pudding. It can be made healthier by using low fatyoghurt or 'poshed up' for a supper party by using a blow torch on the sugarand adding some chopped nuts to the oats.

6 sticks of rhubarb2 pieces of stem ginger1 orangeTub Greek yoghurt100g oatsDemerara sugar

Wash rhubarb and chop into 2 cm pieces.Chop stem ginger into small piecesSlice skin from orange and chop into small pieces removing pithy bits.Place rhubarb, ginger and orange in a pan and place on low heat. There is noneed to add water but just watch during the first few minutes of cooking beforethe rhubarb juices start to run.

Cook gently for about 10 minutes until rhubarb is just soft.Take care not to over cook. Poaching in the oven will help retain the shape ofthe rhubarb pieces.

Place oats on a baking sheet. Place under a hot grill for about 30 seconds untiljust browning.

Place fruit into a dish, place a dollop of yoghurt on top and sprinkle with thetoasted oats and demerara sugar

The Badminton season isdrawing to an end with onlyclub nights and training tocontinue until the summerholidays. All matches have

been played by all three teams. In the juniors, the A team started inDivision 2 where they stayed for mostof the season apart from Llanferres’fixture at Mold, when they played inDivision 3. They finished on a highwhen they came top of Division 2. TheB team started the season in Division5 and remained there for the entireseason. Unfortunately, the B teamwere unable to take part in half of thefixtures due to lack of playersavailable. This was also due to twofixtures being held in the schoolholidays. Well done to the youngerplayers who regularly played up forthe A team.

Also in the junior section on Sunday14th April the Gareth Coppacktournament was held at DeesideLeisure Centre. Llanferres entered 1team in the competition. This team wasWilliam Fellows, Declan Bonar, NickPrtak and James Ormerod (see photoL-R) . They came first in their group andthen beat Connah’s Quay C in thequarter finals. They then met Flint A inthe semi-finals and only lost out on aplace in the final by 1 point. At the end of this season, we see Moiraending her time with the junior squadas junior league representative andthank her for all her hard work inorganising events, junior leaguematches and at junior training sessions.

In the seniors, the A Team had a veryslow start to the year with some heavydefeats and despite some battling winstowards the end of the season, theseason ended in relegation from thefirst division. Some of the notablehighlights of the year were the reservesplaying up for the A team, notablyHugo who put in an excellentperformance at Northop to win hismen’s doubles (with Duncan) and JuneLovell who put a battling performance

at home to Deeside who won herladies doubles (with Jenni) in a nailbiting match 25-23 in the third game. The season for the B Team has to benamed the ‘nearly season’, for nearlywinning quite a few matches but onlywinning some and drawing someothers!  Highs included a good wintoward the end of the season againstFlint Phoenix - one of the top teams inthe division and creditable drawsagainst other top teams, showing whatwe could have done if we had had a fullteam all season.  A level exams andholidays seemed to take their tollsomehow….It was good to see June Lovell back incompetitive badminton after a year out

Badminton Club news

Page 19: Llanferres News & Views May 2013

and her game improved steadilythroughout the season.  Specialmention to Hugo and Dan Williamswho had an excellent season winningmost of their games in the men’sdoubles.  We also saw a number of CTeam players such as Mark Pimblett,Luke Givelin and Alabama Berrydeputising on a number of occasions

for the B team and showing greatimprovement and enthusiasm.Looking at how close our matcheswere this year, can’t help feeling thatnext season will be ‘our year’ - if onlywe can field a regular team!

The C Team has finished their firstseason (unfortunately at the bottom ofdivision 3). However they now have ahopeful next season, to be lookingforward to, with aseasons experiencewell under the belt. The C team hasachieved its aim - ingiving the youngerplayers of the seniorclub experiencewithin the seniorleague, and mostimportantly to enjoy

playing badminton. Each match hasseen a different member of the teamtaking on the role of a captain, in whichthey organised all aspects of thematch. Each captain rose to thechallenge with very few hiccoughs. On the 11th April the club held ahandicapped tournament, where allplayers from all teams combined intotwo groups and were given ahandicap as a double pair in order toplay games against all. It was a verysociable evening, with the finalresulting in Nick Prtak and HugoWilliams (handicap +2) beating DaveClough and Mel Berry (Handicap -7)21-16. Thank you to all members whocontributed to a very successfulevening… the food was great and theatmosphere was incredible.

So there we have it…. The club wishesto thank all who have put their time infor free and a lot of effort into makingthe season tick by so effortlessly. Thanks also to Tom and Moira forphotos at the Gareth CoppackTournament and the handicaptournament at Ruthin LC, and to Claireand Simon for providing round-ups forthe A and B teams.

News & Views 23

I think that you will have all realised that I hadsent my article for the last copy of News andViews in early. By the time you received yourcopies the spring flowers I had mentioned in myreport were covered in two to three feet of snowand in some places even deeper.

Within forty eight hours spring had turned towinter with a vengeance and many parts of ourward were cut off from civilisation. My telephonestarted to ring on the Friday morning and by thefollowing Friday I had received on average ten totwelve calls a day asking for help.

These ranged from farmers who could not getfeed to their animals, to residents whose roadshad not been visited by snow ploughs. In someareas because the lanes were so narrow and thesnow so deep, the ploughs were unable to helpbecause there was no where for the ploughedsnow to go. Eventually we had to bring in diggerswith buckets to drop the snow over the hedges.

The police helped to rescue a duty manager froma local hotel after he became cut off on his own, with out heat for over three days and a mountainrescue team came to the assistance of aneighbour in Llanarmon Yn Ial after theambulance service were unable to get to thevillage.

Welfare teams assessed cases and emergencyservices were used to get insulin to diabetics andmedical supplies to those who needed them.

I believe that Denbighshire's highwaysdepartment rose to the challenge and that theirteams along with local contractors did anexcellent job under very difficult circumstances. In areas around Llandegla for example, theyfaced the added problem of trees that had fallenacross the roads due to the weight of the snowand these had to be cleared before the snowploughs could get on with their work.

It was also great to see people rallying around tohelp neighbours and checking on the elderly. Thecommunity spirit was fantastic and this was so

true in Llanferres whereafter a few e-mails thirtypeople turned up at thechurch to clear the pathsso that a local girl couldget to the alter on time.I am also grateful to theHighways Department and one of our localcontractors for helping to clear the snow fromthe road outside the church. It really was a whitewedding and I would like to add my best wishesto Michael and Alison and hope that they havea great future together.

On a more contentious note, once again we sawpeople acting irresponsibly by parking on bothsides of the A494 trunk road at Loggerheadsreducing the width of the road to a single lane. The traffic conditions were already appallingdue to the snow and it is amazing that therewere no accidents and injuries. I also feel verysorry for the local farmer in Cadole who onceagain had his fences broken down and rubbishleft all over his land by people who supposedlycome out to enjoy and appreciate ourcountryside.

I have raised my concerns about the numberand the style of the signs that have nowappeared along the verges at Loggerheads. I amalso still chasing the funding required for theadditional parking that is now so badly neededfor the country park.

This month as your County Councillor, i wasasked to join three other members incompleting the Chief Executives annualappraisal and I have also been sitting as amember of a forum to review the countiesfuture strategy for economic development.

Best wishes for the spring and summer to come.Martyn

New Members Needed. The children's playing field has been available for the children of our

community for well over ten years. This has only been made possible bythe people who volunteer their time to help out, not only with the work

parties and fund raising, but also by joining the committee.

This may sound like a load of hassle, but there really is not that much todo, other than come to the meetings every few months and join in.

The meetings are usually held in the Druid pub and last about an hour.

Most of the current members have older children who no longer use thePark, or, in some cases none at all! If we do not get new people to come

along and join in, the park and playing field will no longer have acommittee and will close.

We’re sure there are plenty of parents who use the facility and whosechildren would not like to see it closed, but we need you to volunteer.

The AGM will be announced shortly, so please come along , or contactone of the above. Many Thanks

The machine will cost £200,000 and the League of Friends has alreadyset aside £100,000 from its Funds. We are relying on the public to helpus raise the remainder.

If you would like to donate you can do so in the enclosed envelope andthese can be put into the collecting tins at Herbert's Shop in Cadole,Loggerheads Garage and The Druid Inn, Llanferres. On the other handif you prefer to put cash in the collecting tin there is no problem.

If you use the envelope and you are a taxpayer please complete yourname and address on the envelope so that we can claim tax back.

Thank you for your help.

I suppose every bird watcher has a 'bogey'bird, to use the parlance of bird twitchers.A 'bogey' bird is one which the birdwatcher has consistently been unable tosee despite his/her best endeavours. Forme it was the Hawfinch,(which glories inthe scientific name of Coccothraustescoccothraustes) until I saw a small flock ofthem in February 2007 in a small woodjust south of Ruthin. So imagine mysurprise, and delight, when a pair turnedup in our garden on 7th April of this year, feeding on spilt seed below the bird table. They were with other finches, includingthree Bramblings in full spring plumage, emphasising the size difference. Theyreturned the next day but we have notseen them since. To those not familiar with this birdperhaps a description might help. It is thebiggest of our finches being almost thesize of a song thrush and is unmistakable. With the male, the overall colour is lightbrown with the head more orange. Thereis a black circle round the eye extendingto its beak and forming a black bib. Theback and side of its neck are grey, whilethe wings are black with a broad whitestripe and narrower stripes of brown andblue. The powerful beak is very short, conical shaped and blue in colour. Thefemale is similar but her colouration ismore muted and still cannot be confusedwith any other bird.Hawfinches are rare in Britain and evenwhen present are very elusive anddifficult to see in their natural habitat ofbroad-leafed woodland, where they spendmuch of their time in the higher branches. The native birds are mostly sedentary butwill move about, usually in small flocks, looking for food, especially in late winter, when their natural food is scarce. Theyfeed primarily on hard seeds such asHaws(from which it probably gets its

name), Cherry, Yew, Beech, Hips, Pineseeds and Hornbeam. They can crackopen Cherry stones with their powerfulbeaks which can exert a force of 30 - 45kilogram. We do sometimes get a winterinflux of birds from mainland Europe butthey usually remain on the east coast. However, because we had a male andfemale, our birds are likely to be abreeding pair.An indication of how hard it has been forsheep to find food, is the amount of barkthat they have eaten from some trees, especially Elder, Blackthorn and, to alesser degree Ash. Some trees arecompletely stripped of bark up to nearlytwo metres from the ground. After thesnow went, the fields and road bankslooked flat and desolate until a patch ofbright yellow Coltsfoot lifted the spiritswith indications of spring. Chiffchaffshave arrived (we even had one in thegarden) and Wheatears are on the moors, and bumblebees are coming out ofhibernation but all are about 3/4 weekslater than usual. A pair of Goosanders ona local lake was a welcome sight as I hadnot seen them there before. Hopefully, they will stay to breed. This is a birdmainly of the north but since 1970 it hasextended its breeding range into northernEngland and Wales. In the pond, life is evident - frogs arespawning and I have seen water divingbeetles, shrimps, water 'fleas', waterslaters(aquatic wood lice), leaches, whirligig beetles, backswimmers and, surprisingly, newt tadpoles. The latterwere about three centimetres long andhad their legs, so were well developed. Itis too early for them to be this year'shatching, so these must haveoverwintered in the pond from last yearwhen their development was probablydelayed by the cool summer weather.

Next month I will publish the first of my accounts of men from the village whogave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914 - 1918

Private John William Cordiner was killed during the Battle of the Somme in 1916aged just 21.

I am indebted (in advance) for the kind help and assistance of Michael andMeirion Cordiner with their family history, and also Geoff Crump, chief curatorat the Cheshire Military Museum in Chester

Hopefully, I will be able to tell the stories of some of the seven other soldiers overthe next few months, and would be grateful to hear from any of the relatives oranyone with any information on:-

Private Charles Williams - Royal Welch FusiliersPrivate William Arthur Williams - Royal Welch FusiliersPrivate Frederick Reynold Roberts - Royal Welch FusiliersPrivate Edwin Edwards - Cheshire RegimentPrivate Benjamin (?) Peters - Royal Welch FusiliersSerjeant Walter Augustus Fernyhough - Loyal North LancsPrivate David Woodward - Royal Welch Fusiliers

Following negotiations with Llanferres Community Council, I am hoping that thecommemoration stone will be re-etched with the names of those killed in the twoworld wars and other conflicts, in time for the 100th anniversary on the 11thNovember 2014. My knowledge of the Second World War is not great so I wouldappreciate any details of names of those lost then or in later conflicts that anyonemight know of to add to the stone.
